"There are no legacies in this life, just the water. It pays us, then it claims us, swallows us whole." Chills every time. The dialogue in this show is impeccable.
The island they're on is New Providence Island. The pirates control the port city of Nassau but the rest of the island is inhabited by non-pirates like the preacher or farmers and plantation owners.
The position that Flint wanted to attack in was perfect, a large ship like that is deadly when they can attack in a broadside, where all the cannons can fire more or less at once. But if you attack from the rear/front, not only can the larger ship not fire back, but the cannon balls travel down the entire length of the ship taking out entire rows of men/cannons.
You are wrong sir. Have you seen this show? Some of the best highlights from the show is just dialogue and the performances. Especially Flint's speeches
You've already probably recorded the next episode, but in case you haven't just an FYI: The actor of Dufresne was recast for the second season, because the original actor had to leave the role as he had brain cancer and sadly died because of it.
Hi there, about wanting to have a Man-O-War as a pirate. There is a good reason why most pirates did not use those ship. (With the exemption of Black Bread.) A Man-O-War is huge, slow and anything but low profile. It was not uncommon for a Man-o-War to boast a crew of 300-600 men. (that is excluding soldiers and passengers.) As a pirate you spend most of your time trying not to get into fights: Either you terrify your prize into surrendering without a fight, go for a sneak attack or simply try to slip away. A huge warship is not ideal for sailing with smaller crews( you would need at least 250-270 to operate all the guns at once). Is hard to disguise a warship as a trading vessel, they are slow and can’t sail in shallow water. As a pirate crew of about 70-150 men you are far better off with a sloop that is fast, manoeuvrable and inconspicuous.
In reply to what Mickey said, actually gunshot wounds to the shoulder were incredibly dangerous back in the day, not only from infection, but because of how splinters of bone from the shoulder blade can travel through the blood stream, clogging it. Also yes, the Spanish are burying the gold on the beach. While the concept of pirates burying treasure for later is a myth, it would make sense for the Spanish navy to bury their gold like that. They're planning to leave on their remaining Man of War, after all, and there would probably not be enough room for all the gold. They'd have to leave at least some of it behind with a few guards. They're basically doing the most sensible thing in their situation with the time they have.
Trust me people, she WILL keep hating him, you can see it in her face and in her voice that she has already decided to hate him and nothing will change that (Unlike the others). I can see already that her hate for the character will even cloud her judgment of his decisions. A few weeks in the future you can all come back here and i will say "I told you" LOL
Flint did what he did for the greater good which he believes is more important than the individual. If everyone listened to him, they could have succeeded.
That scene with the warship was fucking awesome. Their plan was to destroy its rudder, preventing the man o' war from turning. As you could see; as soon as the warship manages to turn, they're fucked. They had a good chance of winning that battle, had Dufresne not delayed the initial attack. The ship moved away from them, making it more difficult to accurately target the relatively small rudder. They gambled, they lost.
If, by the end of this show, Flint isn't one of your best and favourite characters in the history of television I will be incredibly surprised. Absolutely love that man!
Season 1 had some growing pains which most first seasons do but seasons 2, 3, and 4 are phenomenal all the way through. It's a 38-hour masterpiece. Deserved GoT's hype.
Dufresne, and he hadn't passed yet at the time. Much like the original actor for Spartacus he left the role, advising and giving his blessing for them to find a new actor.
Exactly. If they'd fired when Flint told them, it's possible the plan would have worked. Instead Dufresne interrupted and they got absolutely wrecked, and only survived because of an act of god.
Two small pirate ships picked a fight against an 18th century battleship with a professional crew. It didn’t even break a sweat destroying both at the same time.
Season 1 is pretty good but i think the show still doesn't feel like it has a strong identity yet so i understand why some are not in love with it at this point. Next season though, i don't know what happened but its like they figured out exactly what they show needed to be. From season 2 up until the end of the series its such a huge upgrade in every department. The writing, characters, production values, cinematography, everything is so incredible
If they did fire all guns the moment Flint wanted, they would have good chance to win. if they hit the boat from the behind, it will damage all the guns on the broadside of the larger ship and even the ship managed to turn back, it would not be able to fire its guns at the same time or at all. Flint need to kill gates or otherwise they would have no chance to win at all. if everyone listened to Flint, everything would be fine. Flint is not very good communicator but he is a great decision maker.
The Urca de Lima is a real Spanish Treasure ship that really did wreck off the coast of modern day Florida. As for why they haven't stolen a ship as big as a Man-of-War, think about why modern pirates don't have ships as big as Destroyers or Battleships. The key to piracy is speed and maneuverability.
Lol how do you figure that they are “unburying” the gold from the storm? Do you imagine the chests were launched into the air and landed so forcefully they went underground? They were burying the gold so it is at least protected until another ship arrives to help them.
really been looking forward to this. yeah if they started shooting earlier they could have got some good shots, from stern to bows. one lucky shot can kill like 30 people (like it did in the battle of Trafalgar) and do so much damage so. really looking forward to the next season, IT ONLY GETS BETTER.
Dufresne still hasn't caught on who the "heroes" of this story are. He certainly doesn't have either the balls or the brains to take on Flint and his new bestie Silver.
Really dissapointed in Nahid dropping this show. I wonder if he would actually stay and watch Breaking Bad if he hadnt seen it before or if he would leave because of "slow" and "no action" like he did here. You really missed out on this one son. Sad times when peoples attention spans are down to 5 minutes. No "action" for 5 minutes and they fall asleep.
“I had no idea this had connections to that book” I hope you’re talking about Pinocchio and not Treasure Island because; John Silver, Flint, Billy Bones...... what do they teach in English class in America?!
It's a year down the line from this reaction going up, even longer since the shows over, and, if you haven't read the book (to anyone reading this comment) John Silver is the books main villain, so this show is going to be about good people dying and bad people winning. get used to it.
The problem with Eleanor is they portray her as unreasonable due to romantic relationships when to be a woman trying to be a big fish in that pond you'd have to be very shrewd dealing with people. I think she'd have a bit more toughness like Anne Bonny.
There is a good reason why the series started out slow . . . it is a SERIAL DRAMA. It had to create its setting, narrative and characters. A good writer should not do all of t his by rushing the story.
Seriously, I have disliked her in every single reaction of shows. She is only there for the angels, the hotties and the Disney characters. It's a bit sad, if not annoying.
Marketa is so incredibly annoying. She categorizes every character as either good or bad because she only sees everything in black and white. Wrong person to watch a show like this.
Can you guys please react to the new "Fantasy Island" Movie Trailer that dropped this afternoon please. ua-cam.com/video/JKu_3sZul0o/v-deo.html Thanks in advance. Its funny how such a good speech can be wrong. Even today Blackbeard and Vane are remembered along with alot of other pirates.

For those out of the loop, Long John Silver had one leg in the book and was the ORIGIN of that pirate trope in popular culture.
@Jude Miller no in the book he has only one leg and he hops around on a crutch...

Flint did nothing wrong 😌 that is the life of a pirate
Yea he had to have known Flint wasn't just gonna hand over his life's work and by Gates leaving that would have sealed his fate. So Gates had to go.
Agree
Yes.

Flints a BOSS
