Easily one of the best and definitely underrated shows in the past decade, everything from writing to the costume and set designs easily rivals the likes of Vikings/GoT ect but most importantly satisfyingly wraps a beautiful story full of some of the best written characters on tv period!

I will say that Black Sails continuously gets better straight until the end and doesn't stop, whereas some might agree that Vikings drops abit in quality after a particular event.

In my opinion, the big thesis that this show explores is this: what is civilization, and what does it mean to survive under it for those that it marginalizes? I'm really glad Milena is willing to give the show another chance. I know what she's talking about and I don't blame her for dropping it the first time (it's also my biggest criticism of the show). This show really is something special and I hope Lola and Milena end up enjoying it even half as much as I do.
Best executive decision ever 😄😍 EDIT: the show is complete, it wasn't cut short nor canceled. There aren't as many episodes as in other shows, but they are longer than the average. Also, quality over quantity ;) EDIT 2: yes there are characters based on real ones, but Flint and Silver are 100% fictional. I would advice NOT to google who are and who aren't though, there is a high chance you'd get spoiled on show events.

Nah all four seasons are fantastic. I think the first season is the worst. And I like it a lot. Plenty of world building. I don't see how anyone can say the last two seasons fell off. That borderline insane to me. Black Sails is one of the best written shows of all time for me. Along with The Wire, Deadwood, Breaking Bad and the first 4 seasons of the Game Of Thrones. I think Justified is another very well written show. Even though the first season is more formulaic. But the humor on that show is right up my alley. Black Sails has as many well written good to great characters as any show I can think of.

Here are some trivia facts: A 'piece of eight' or "real de a ocho" was a Spanish silver coin and was one the most valuable international currency at the time. The Urca de Lima was a real Spanish treasure ship. Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, was renowned as a main base of operations for pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy. Captain Flint is loosely inspired by the character of the same name from Robert Louis Stevenson's book 'Treasure Island'. Also some of the crew members (like 'the cook') are based on characters from that novel. Captain Charles Vane, the pirate girl Anne Bonny, and the fancy dressed Jack Rackham, also known as Calico Jack, were real historical pirates. Calico Jack was the inspiration for the character Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Jack's jolly roger is also the most popularized pirate flag. Imo its what most people think of when they think of a pirate flag. I know i did and i didnt know it was his flag until i started looking up different pirates jolly rogers lol
Obviously the most famous pirate figures in the show are Blackbeard, Long John Silver and Captain Flint. They’re pervasive in popular culture, everyone knows them (and i haven’t read Treasure Island). I remember watching this show years ago and I couldn’t get past the first season, i stopped and forgot about it for years and then i just went back and forced myself to get past the few first episodes and guess what, it’s easily in my top 5 shows of all times, it’s just perfect and looking back at it now, the first season is great, slow at times but not as bad as I remember it.

The first season is definitely much weaker than the rest. I stopped watching after it the first time I tried watching the show, the second time I was hooked after a few episodes into season 2. From then on it was fantastic, it’s one of those shows that just gets better and better.
IMO this is one of those shows that in 20 years will be remember along side with Mad Men the Wire, Breaking Bad, and the Sopranos as some of greatest dramas ever written. The character development in this show is phenomenal, and just one those shows where each season is better than the previous one.

After The Wire now its Black Sails...thats 2 of my top 3 favourite shows! You are in for one hell of the ride. People complain about season 1 being kind of slow(which I dont agree but each to its own), but no matter what please stick with it. Season 2 and 3 is peak story telling that rivals The Wire season 4. So stocked!

Some of these characters were actual pirates. Vane was particularly brutal. She show does a good job mixing in the Treasure Island story with actual people from the time.
And so the journey begins…. Black sails is such a great show it’s a treat you’ve decided to do it because as you said it will be a constant runner up as it just doesn’t have the numbers some other shows do although it deserves it.
In case you don't know this, the show is the prequel to the book, "Treasure Island," written in 1883, by Robert Louis Stevenson. It's a fantastic show.
ooooh boy now this is what I've been waiting for. What a series. I don't think it starts as bad as some say it definitely tries to lure folk in with a bit too much sex and nudity which was an angle coming off the back of GoT popularity at the same time. But it builds and builds and just wow what a show. One of the best action drama's and trust me it sticks the landing unlike so many shows.
I am glad you guys are finally getting around to reacting to this. It makes it so you will have watched all my favorites. Breaking Bad, Mr Robot, this, and Expanse. Really looking forward to seeing your thoughts on it and am glad I get to watch your reactions again. I am confident you will love it once you get going on it. The writing, story, and character arcs in it are on par with Mr Robot (in my opinion). In Black Sails the first 4 episodes are just the rollercoaster slowly clicking up that first hill. After that it is all excitement and twists and turns.
Some background information (no spoilers): The show is set shortly after the War of Spanish Succession, fought between the British and Spanish Empires. The West Indies, mainly the Bahamas were a great focus, mainly due to the sugar plantations (slavery was at its peak). Between the navies, there are the privateers and the pirates. Privateers are basically naval mercenaries hired by either empire against the other, they were contracted and received payment. Pirates are independent, and they usually raided the cargo ships, remember the area is very rich in sugar, but also lots of spices, metals and other resources. The europeans also took a lot of treasures, not just from here but from the South Americas too. The pirates made Nassau their home, as it was basically free from the government of both empires. Historical records show the pirates wanted it to make it a haven and and a safe space for themselves. The Urca de Lima was also real, it had unimaginable wealth even to this day, and it inspired a lot of fictional stories. Probably all the "pirate treasure" tales stem from this. The show is founded on the historical setting, and mixes the real and fictional characters very well. You will meet many historical figures (pirates and others), and will see their actions, so even googling them can be spoilery! By the end of the show, it will set up "Treasure Island" very nicely. ~ Also, a lot of people say the first season is bad, but it's not! It's excellent. Later season are even better, that is true.
Congratulations, you've just watched the worst episode of Black Sails. The first season may be the smallest in scale, some see it as the weakest but it is subtly setting up so much for FANTASTIC pay off later, that it deserves equal praise with what comes later. Such an underestimated gem....bit slow season 1, but wow does it just takeoff, so many great performances.....Jack Rackhamis one of my favorites and I can't explain why
After The Wire, you guys are watching a second show from my top 3 in Black Sails. Sweet, also the first time I tried watching I dropped it in like episode 5 or 6 and when I watched it next time I was like how the fuck did I drop this. Just wasn't the right time I suppose

My favorite show ever!! Game of Thrones was but those last few seasons..... Couple non spoiler things. The ship they are after, with the 5 million in gold, is worth today about 150 million...so it's a lot of money back then. The show mixes actually historical pirates (like Vane, Rackham, Anne Bonnie, etc) and characters from fiction like Flint, Silver and Billy So much more to say but I'll just say enjoy the ride!! I don't think S1 is slow but others do. So I'll say think of S1 (8 episodes) as setup for the next 3 seasons. This is going to be fun Edit : This show wont get great numbers on youtube, it sadly never does. But the loyal Black Sails fans will be here week after week with you
One of the best, most underrated shows ever created. Stick with it until end of season 1 and I PROMISE you will be hooked. Season 1 is a little tough but as a whole, the series was masterfully written, scripted, shot…you name it. It’s utterly brilliant if you have the patience to pay attention and see it through.
Oh my god... I am so incredibly happy you are starting this show, it is SO good. You always pay so much attention to shows you watch and notice all the subtext - this one will treat you well.
I love that you're upfront and honest about how you feel about the show. Episode 3 makes it extremely hard to recommend, especially to women, but that is honestly the last time sexual violence is depicted. It's worth watching to S2E5 to really understand what makes us so proud of the show.
If you guys love this then I suggest Percy Jackson and the Olympians, because it has the same showrunners as Black Sails. Percy is for kids while Black Sails is obviously for adults but you can definitely see the parallels between the two of them and the way the characters are written.
Barry is a great show, and you should definitely watch it at some point. Black Sails is a different kind of great show, and without a doubt the best pirate show ever made. Even though the main characters are fictional, the depictions of the pirate world are very accurate and realistic. My one criticism is that the first season is a bit slow, because it spends so much time setting up the world. But then it really kicks into high gear. As a side note, it was written as an unofficial prequel to the book "Treasure Island", by Robert Louis Stevenson. I had read the book in grade school, but after finishing the show I had to pick up a copy the very next day and I read it over a weekend.
I'm so happy because this show is amazing and very few channels react to it! I haven't watched this channel in a while because most of the shows don't interest me, but now we have hxh and black sails!

Lola and Milena, "Sons of Anarchy" is right up your alley and an amazing show. Don't listen to the nay sayers. It has a HUGE fan base out there and it will bring a lot of new viewers to the channel. Maybe you could agree to react to SE1 ( 7 seasons | 92 episodes ) and then decide if you will continue it or drop it. Give SofA a chance, you'll love it.

This! I just wrote something similar. I wasn't fully with it until almost half way to season 2 then it just took off and what a great ride...
I think it was too many characters intriduced too fast in season 1. And it takes until season 2 to get to know them and care about them.

Black sails is such a great show it’s a treat you’ve decided to do it because as you said it will be a constant runner up as it just doesn’t have the numbers some other shows do although it deserves it.
You guys are in for such a treat - probably the best written tv show of all time and an incredibly important work of philosophy.

In case you don't know this, the show is the prequel to the book, "Treasure Island," written in 1883, by Robert Louis Stevenson. It's a fantastic show.
ooooh boy now this is what I've been waiting for. What a series. I don't think it starts as bad as some say it definitely tries to lure folk in with a bit too much sex and nudity which was an angle coming off the back of GoT popularity at the same time. But it builds and builds and just wow what a show. One of the best action drama's and trust me it sticks the landing unlike so many shows.

I am glad you guys are finally getting around to reacting to this. It makes it so you will have watched all my favorites. Breaking Bad, Mr Robot, this, and Expanse. Really looking forward to seeing your thoughts on it and am glad I get to watch your reactions again. I am confident you will love it once you get going on it. The writing, story, and character arcs in it are on par with Mr Robot (in my opinion). In Black Sails the first 4 episodes are just the rollercoaster slowly clicking up that first hill. After that it is all excitement and twists and turns.
Some background information (no spoilers):
The show is set shortly after the War of Spanish Succession, fought between the British and Spanish Empires. The West Indies, mainly the Bahamas were a great focus, mainly due to the sugar plantations (slavery was at its peak).
Between the navies, there are the privateers and the pirates. Privateers are basically naval mercenaries hired by either empire against the other, they were contracted and received payment. Pirates are independent, and they usually raided the cargo ships, remember the area is very rich in sugar, but also lots of spices, metals and other resources. The europeans also took a lot of treasures, not just from here but from the South Americas too.
The pirates made Nassau their home, as it was basically free from the government of both empires. Historical records show the pirates wanted it to make it a haven and and a safe space for themselves.
The Urca de Lima was also real, it had unimaginable wealth even to this day, and it inspired a lot of fictional stories. Probably all the "pirate treasure" tales stem from this.
The show is founded on the historical setting, and mixes the real and fictional characters very well. You will meet many historical figures (pirates and others), and will see their actions, so even googling them can be spoilery! By the end of the show, it will set up "Treasure Island" very nicely.
~ Also, a lot of people say the first season is bad, but it's not! It's excellent.
Later season are even better, that is true.
Congratulations, you've just watched the worst episode of Black Sails. The first season may be the smallest in scale, some see it as the weakest but it is subtly setting up so much for FANTASTIC pay off later, that it deserves equal praise with what comes later. After The Wire, you guys are watching a second show from my top 3 in Black Sails. Sweet, also the first time I tried watching I dropped it in like episode 5 or 6 and when I watched it next time I was like how the fuck did I drop this. Just wasn't the right time I suppose

My favorite show ever!! Game of Thrones was but those last few seasons.....
Couple non spoiler things. The ship they are after, with the 5 million in gold, is worth today about 150 million...so it's a lot of money back then. The show mixes actually historical pirates (like Vane, Rackham, Anne Bonnie, etc) and characters from fiction like Flint, Silver and Billy
So much more to say but I'll just say enjoy the ride!! I don't think S1 is slow but others do. So I'll say think of S1 (8 episodes) as setup for the next 3 seasons. This is going to be fun
Edit : This show wont get great numbers on youtube, it sadly never does. But the loyal Black Sails fans will be here week after week with you
One of the best, most underrated shows ever created. Stick with it until end of season 1 and I PROMISE you will be hooked. Season 1 is a little tough but as a whole, the series was masterfully written, scripted, shot…you name it. It’s utterly brilliant if you have the patience to pay attention and see it through.

I love that you're upfront and honest about how you feel about the show. Episode 3 makes it extremely hard to recommend, especially to women, but that is honestly the last time sexual violence is depicted. It's worth watching to S2E5 to really understand what makes us so proud of the show.

If you guys love this then I suggest Percy Jackson and the Olympians, because it has the same showrunners as Black Sails. Percy is for kids while Black Sails is obviously for adults but you can definitely see the parallels between the two of them and the way the characters are written.

Barry is a great show, and you should definitely watch it at some point. Black Sails is a different kind of great show, and without a doubt the best pirate show ever made. Even though the main characters are fictional, the depictions of the pirate world are very accurate and realistic. My one criticism is that the first season is a bit slow, because it spends so much time setting up the world. But then it really kicks into high gear.
As a side note, it was written as an unofficial prequel to the book "Treasure Island", by Robert Louis Stevenson. I had read the book in grade school, but after finishing the show I had to pick up a copy the very next day and I read it over a weekend.
I'm so happy because this show is amazing and very few channels react to it! I haven't watched this channel in a while because most of the shows don't interest me, but now we have hxh and black sails!

one of my favorite shows that's ever aired! the writing, acting, and production quality are all top tier, but unfortunately aired on Starz during the height of Game of Thrones popularity, so didnt get the recognition it deserved.
