Gun Kata could be the dumbest conceptualization of a supreme gunfighter I've ever fucking heard, but it rules so hard. Literally as explained in the film they just predict everything through homework and somehow that translates to being the fastest gun in the future
Make Preston a girl, hire James Franco as a sexy love interest, add factions in the world building, maybe people are authorized to have only one single type of feelings so you have "the angry", "the joyful", etc, but Preston fits in none of those because she is so unique.
This movie is so funny-bad. The gun-kata is just so embarrassing to watch that it goes beyond cringe into genuine enjoyment. This is also one of those movies where you can so clearly see the gap between the writer/director's imagination and their practical capabilities, which is always amusing to see. Like every henchman just wears the same leather jacket and motorcycle helmet - it's not even done up to look sci-fi or functional in any way; it's literally just a basic motorcycle helmet. The Clerics drive a 90s Oldsmobile or Buick (or some other old-people car brand), also not done up to look like anything special. You could find more creative production and costuming in the most bottom-of-the-barrel Italian rip-off sci-fi B movie. Wimmer probably imagined a ton of cool gun battles in this great revolutionary wave at the end of the movie, but the best he could do with directing was "just run at them." But really the movie is immune to criticism because you just know that Wimmer doesn't care - he already achieved his dream of inventing gun kata and slaying divorcee puss, so what does your opinion of his movie matter to him at all? I salute this king.
They should do the three gun kata movies, the other two being Aeon Flux and Ultraviolet. All three are essentially the exact same movie and I loved them all as a kid. Equilibrium is hilarious the best of the three, though.
Ultraviolet has one of my favorite behind-the-scenes anecdote where before they started filming, Kurt Wimmer asked Jovovich to punch him to prove her commitment to the action scenes and she straight up punched him in the face and gave him a black eye for days.
I remember watching this in 7th grade and we had just finished reading Fahrenheit 451. I was so hooked because I was "13 and this is deep". Funnily enough, Fahrenheit 451 is in the UA-cam recs of this video
Haven't listened yet but my absolute Fave part of this movie is right at the end where the chubby bad guy is like 'You shouldn't kill me! Killing me is Murder!'. Gotta say, it's a good argument ngl would've have given me pause.

I had a friend at school who would go on and on about this movie, Fear Factory was the least heavy and obscure band he was into and despite selling me on his novel (interdimensional 'kai swords' that could slice through star systems), handwritten in tiny script 2h pencil, upon reading the first 3 pages i found the imprisoned protagonists' musings on the nature on entropy fairly dull. Just like his novel, i found this film as disappointing as the Chronicles of Xadren.
