    I can’t tell you how happy I am to have found this channel. After the recent “super league”, these old MOTD’s are making me feel whole again.

    Football Heaven,
    Thanks for this edition of Dead Good Match/Match of the Day. Fine commentary as always by Barry Davies and John Motson RIP.

    I'd forgotten about Kendall in Spurs goal around this period. I remember Daines,Aleksic and of course Clemence.

    Has to pointed out, but smart, elegant and simplified strips in these three games.

    Absolute silence at Anfield...bizarre having just watched so many matches from the 1970s with YNWA echoing round the park. Alan Kennedy really was splendid, though - no wonder he kept getting important goals..
    Reminds me of Fergusson's Man United in the early 2000s, grinding out big wins without seeming to try very hard, just patiently unpicking the opposing defence then a glut of goals near the end

    When I think of a Liverpool team and go by name and number it's THIS list that always comes to mind, even with "Carrot Top" Fairclough in the no 12 shirt.
    Rush still at Chester, Walsh at Luton, Hodgson and Johnston yet to come from Smoggieland, no Lawro or Robinson (still at Brighton, Robbo coming from Manchester City and features in the Brighton V WBA game) and even Whelan was still playing at Home Farm, ROI. Steve Nicol still at Ayr United and Gary Gillespie at Highfield Road. Where Kevin McDonald came from is anyone's guess....

    Liverpool playing as casual as Jimmy Hill's shirt..
    The time between mid 80 after we won the league and late 81 was painful, but now in hindsight was necessary. Our form went off a cliff although we showed flashes of class, winning a League cup and beating Real Madrid in Paris 😁but at the same time Whelan, Nicol, Rush, Lawro all coming in.
    A year of stress, a decade of success YNWA 🔴

    Motty says Liverpool not quite the side they where & then produce this typical classy play result & tho a poor League position still win the European Cup & that trinket League Cup (they all count!). Nice to see Fashanu play. He was a lazy player just barely walking at times but would suddenly burst into life. A good prospect until Clough waved a million pounds, plus maybe a bit for himself, & took this player & ruined him which ultimately led to his demise. Terrible, not such a great manager. Great to have these MOTDs & quality pics & sound. Heaven indeed!

    80/81 my first season going to Anfield aged 8...now and then the guys on the turnstile would tell my old man to chuck me over. A memory sticks of my Dad laughing at the wit going round that went over my head. No humour beats scouse lol

    • @mrkipling2201
      @mrkipling2201 5 років тому +1

      distantvoices I think Ian rush leaving hit them more than they thought it would. It was a bit like us in 85/86 when we fell away in the title race after it was found out that mark Hughes was going to Barcelona. And I have to say that Paul Walsh didn’t look anything like the player he was at Luton, not in my opinion anyway. I think I’ve commented before about Alan Hansen saying that he thought the 85/86 team was the worst Liverpool team he’d played in, maybe that didn’t materialise until 86/87.

    • @mrkipling2201
      @mrkipling2201 5 років тому +1

      distantvoices I’ll have to see if I can find that. And did Walsh and John wark both play at heysel ?? I remember Walsh playing but not wark. And from what I’ve seen of Liverpool in the 85/86 season he didn’t look bad just not at level he was at Luton.

    • @mrkipling2201
      @mrkipling2201 5 років тому +1

      distantvoices that game against Luton was the one where Luton had 3 different keepers wasn’t it ??

    • @mrkipling2201
      @mrkipling2201 5 років тому +1

      distantvoices the one decision I could never understand was the dropping and subsequent selling of Beardsley. That decision made no sense to me at all. I suppose buying Beardsley, Barnes and Aldridge in the summer of 87 spelled the end for Walsh.

    Crikey wasn't John Motson very poor for Alan Hansens brilliant goal? Because Liverpool hadn't scored for 3 games I'd bet Motson had a few quid on Dalglish or Johnson to end Liverpools goal drought😂😂he seemed shocked when Hansen scored and went quiet for 5 seconds🤣🤣

    Liverpool were generally poor in the league 80/81. Finished 5th. One too many missing pieces of the jigsaw. League Cup and European Cup were the salvation...

    Fashanu. A young player with a possible great career ahead of him until he scored a great home goal against poss Man Utd. Clough splashed out a million quid for this young promising player. When he just couldn't produce the goods that a unwarranted million £ price tag pressured him. Clough quickly dropped him & sold him off to neighbours Notts County for a fraction of what he ultimately wasted. Was Peter Taylor still at Forest, if not he certainly would have not yet bought him. Later perhaps. Clough ruined Fash & his promise nosedived & then later he took his own life. Clough not that a great manager. Callous & brutal.
