Football Heaven,
Thanks for this edition of Match of the Day with Jimmy Hill. Good games including a rare visit to Plymouth-opposition goalie Mike Walker 'making it' in management in First Division wirh Norwich & Everton & even in the running for managing the Republic of Ireland!
What a season Ipswich had in 80/81. League runners up, Cup semi final and UEFA Cup winners.
They were undone by injuries. If they'd had Villa's luck in that area (two records of seven ever presents and only fourteen players used (that one joint with Liverpool in 1976-77)), they'd have walked a treble. Kevin Beattie's absence cost them, also.
scherben that’s right and I think Barry Davies mentions in the introductions of the teams the injury problems that Ipswich had. And even with all the injuries they ran villa very close.
Sadly they didn’t. Even as a Aston Villa fan, I can appreciate how good a team this Ipswich Town team was, beat Villa 3 times that season.
@@babaza1972 Villa were still worthy champions; there can't be any other way. And the two 3-3 draws you had with United that season were both superb matches.
@@mrkipling2201 Their defeat to City in the Cup semi-final was quite upsetting. Shite like Paul Power and Gerry Gow at Wembley instead of the cultured Muhren and superb Eric Gates was - and is - a travesty.
I always liked it when match of the day would show highlights of games from the lower divisions in the early and mid 80’s. And the referee for the Plymouth v Colchester game was the referee for the Liverpool v Arsenal game in 89, ‘ it’s up for grabs now ‘
No way...
Most definitely I’m afraid.
Everton Carr looked a very useful player for Leicester but for injury would have played for England
Plymouths Forbes Phillipson-Masters. The poshest sounding name in Football😀
Thing you don't hear anymore - the home crowd applauding a well crafted away team goal
The Ipswich Goalie played in goal for the German team in Escape to Victory.
What a intro Barry! It's like a Battle of the Somme dead & injured report.
Mike walker had lost the ‘tashe by the time he was managing Norwich !! And robson, Moses and Stapleton would be at Old Trafford very soon after the game shown here.
Decent 'keeper though
Mike Walker had also lost the plot by the time he managed Everton
No mention of Lineker until he got subbed - not the legend he thinks he was😅
The red and white ball. Designed for all weather.
Soo sad to see Ipswich struggling in Div 3 nowadays, what a side they had back then.
I've got some good news for you.
I enjoyed this more than todays football
For me there's too much on TV. Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday highlights used to be great.
@@robertjenkins2499 very very well said. It's seven days a week now and all because Sky paid them all the money they wished for. Plus it keeps the pathetic gambling community happy
@@andrewphippsphillips1455 watched 20 minutes of Inter v Shakter. Boring. Had downloaded Chelsea v Leeds 1970 Cup Final replay, quickest two hours in many year.
Des Lynam sounds unsure as a commentator.
If unsure is another way of saying bleedin awful your spot on.
Des Lynam might have been some peoples idea of a great presenter but he was a truly rubbish commentator!
Wasn't Brian Bason a good player for Argyle? I thought he stood out in this game.
Went to Plymouth in November 1980 for Plymouth v Newport. FA Cup 1st Round.
Mike Walker why oh why Everton.
He was better off where he was at Norwich City in all fairness.
Someone was whispering "Kids in posh schools and two Jaguars at the front door, mate"
Norwich's problems have always been finances and keeping hold of good players/managers.
Shame, cos there is money in the area, but the greedy Norfolk landowners won't invest.
Everton should never have let Kendall go in the late 1980s, nor sell Beardsley either. Newcastle got a bargain when Keegan tempted him back....
The things you learn watching these videos. I had no idea that Brendan Batson was a gunner before going to West Brom!
