      This laptop has the form factor and functionality of a T520, so immediately, a lot of enthusiasts would love it. The only thing it's missing is the blessed trackpoint.

      Need is questionable. Some people might benefit but plenty of others would quite literally be weighed down by the extra tonnage for ports and features that have long since become obscure in the consumer space. In truth an SD card reader and USB-A port alongside the now prevalent thunderbolt/ and basic USB-C ports is probably all the extra oomph most people would genuinely appreciate. But VGA ports and disc drives? That’s not really something relevant in 2019 for most people not working in very specific environments which require them due to legacy equipment.

    This is a really cool idea. It would be cool if the modular nature of this laptop made it's way down to more normal laptops

    • @BigTylt
      @BigTylt 5 років тому +13

      I mean, I don't see the average user caring about a modular fingerprint sensor or external GPU as long as they can check their email and Twitter. Maybe the long battery life would appeal to people, but swappable batteries are already a thing, even during the curse of the super-light and super-thin Ultrabook.

      @@BigTylt yeah, a lot of people just dont want to think about a computer after they purchase it. They just want it to work. I use the Dell equivalent. It has a handle. You can rest it on its edges if you need to. No fans. The touchscreen is ultra-bright so you can work outside on a sunny day, no problem. And it's so tough you can bash people to death with it if the need arises. Sure it's expensive, but it's also fully repairable. It's really worth it. F**k Apple.

    its uses for work applications are obviously endless, but consumers that live on laptops would love such freedom

    I have used multiple tough books, genteks, and the Dell XFR miltary issued laptops. Aside from the weight they were good computers that took a lot of abuse and kept right on going. I'd almost lean more that direction my self especially with the modular options.

    I had a Dell Latitude around 2000 that was somewhat modular. It had two bays, and modular 3.5" floppy drive, CD drive, and battery. You could leave behind what you didn't expect to need, and I believe there was a second battery available, so you could put one in each bay.

    Yea. Thanks for reviewing at the Toughbook Michael as I been harassing you to check it out for the past year. You didn’t drop it onto the floor like you do with the flimsy thin ultrabooks which is why I thought the toughbook is a better fit for you. I figured it would have “the look” that you would like and it is used as a prop in Hollywood movies.
    Also, the Toughbook is mil-spec, hardened against radiation too.

    There are multiple computer brands(not Apple) that have modular laptops, although not as extreme as this one, that offer the ability to upgrade/replace components when need be. Every one of them carries its own price tag and most sport a Clevo motherboard with slotted GPU and CPU ports, expandable memory and storage, and removable battery packs.
    Admittedly despite my loyalty to brands like Sager that use Clevo parts I have mulled over getting a tough book more than a few times. Our techs have them out of necessity in the field because of needing to access CCTV cameras on a 30 story building directly to troubleshoot, or at the top of a ladder. Sometimes in the rain, and sometimes at the risk of dropping the computer. Plus the benefit of being able to bring it back to the office, dock it and pick up where you left off is awesome.

    Personally, as a student, I would rather a thinner 2-in-1 laptop that can be folded back to allow for easier handwriting in notes, or annotating a document, and make up for lost functionality/legacy ports through dongles, especially if I am going to have to carry around expansion packs anyway. My laptop allows me to connect up to two extra monitors (One VGA through a USB-C dongle, one HDMI) at a desk, fold the keyboard back, and use the laptop display as a third monitor, as well as connect through Ethernet (again, using a dongle). The dongles were much cheaper than the xPaks, at less than $20 each, and are much easier to carry in a case or in a pocket than the xPaks seem to be, not to mention portable between computers.
