I saw him in concert back in the 80s three times - the last being their farewell tour with Steve as lead. And I cried.

He's IS a rare tenor. A countertenor which is the full range of a female alto not soprano. He also did have perfect pitch, but not 5 octave range. According to singers, his natural range was already so high, but not low. I read he has a high full three to three 1/2 to 4 octave range. Definitely not 5 because he didn't have a lower register. Also, my favorite singer.❤

When Steve hits those high notes, it's magical. Neal Schon used to play with Carlos Santana before joining Journey.

    • @jeanne5950
      @jeanne5950 5 місяців тому

Neal was the original Journey along with band mate Greg Rollie also from Santana. He & Rollie left Santana and Neal started the Journey before Steve's arrival. The original Journey was a different sound before Steve joined. It was Steve who brought more of the change to the band. Neal was not happy at first with this change because he wanted more of a metal sound then ballads. Steve wrote the song "Lights" and when Neal started to come around more it seemed as though their writing & music collaborations started them on a path to what became "Journey". How Steve came to sing with Journey is a great story. Each has their unique story as to the forming of this legend band. Steve was a great front man and his voice with Neal's guitar was so beautifully matched. I didn't follow the original Journey until Steve joined the band in late 70's. I was in love with Steve but once he left that final goodbye was also my final goodbye because it wasn't the same without Steve. Steve, Neal, Jonathan, Ross, Steve (drummer) those 5 together is the Journey I followed. I fell in love with Steve and his voice . I was thrilled when Steve finally came back out and put out "Traces".

Although he always seemed to be the highlight of this band, if people take notice, Steve acknowledged & uplifted every man & their talented performance, onstage, every song, every part!
He always deflected his 'spot light' & moved it around, seemingly, so that, everyone understood that he knew, he was not & could not, make this greatness all by himself.
I would add that he could have, easily, done it alone, but I would be speaking from a biased attitude, colored with my distaste for Journey's ungrateful disloyalty to their breadwinner, a.k.a., Steve Perry, The Voice!
The tell all in the end is that Journey never reached the status that they had w/The Voice after their 'desperate' ultimatum to Steve, which backfired in their face!
The band never reached the level of success they’d previously had, switching lead singers repeatedly, losing and replacing band mates, and falling into endless internal lawsuits.
Although, they tour, but they still ride on the successful hits that were achieved with Steve.
I attended one of their concerts & quite frankly, you wouldn't be able to comparatively critique their Perry replacement vocals. The audience sings every note, every song. LOL.
I wondered during the entire concert if they really needed to show up, because we, the audience, could have performed Journey's spot without them!

They were all in Halloween costumes, but Steve still had this same shirt on. I had no ticket but me and a friend lucked out and a roadie let us in through the backstage for a few bucks. We went right by the bands (Loverboy was a new band and opened the show) and straight into the auditorium. Couldn't talk to the bands as part of the deal. Needless to say, it was badass.

Steve Perry....The Voice! Saw them 4 times on 3 tours...Escape, Frontiers, and Raised on Radio. He was, consistently, even better in person than on the albums. His voice could take your breath away! Check out When You Love a Woman on their final album together...Trial By Fire. It is a beautiful song. I wanted so badly to hear him sing it live. Unfortunately, his health issue with his hip prevented them from touring with that album. I can imagine it would have been another stunning performance.

First time viewer, but I love Journey and this song. Learning that you’re a drummer, I thought you might be interested to know the drummer in the video in what most Journey fans consider the classic lineup, Steve Smith, a former roadie for the band, is actually more of a jazz fusion drummer as well. Founding member, guitarist, Neal Schon, was playing with Santana at 16 years old and was pursued by Eric Clapton to be a member of his band as well. If you ever decide to look into Journey’s very earliest material prior to Steve Perry joining the band, you’ll discover the band was very progressive musically incorporating many various styles into long jams often instrumental only compositional pieces. Can’t overstate the impact the introduction of Steve had on the band, not just vocally, but in terms of song writing and musical styles as well. Night and day, with his strong sense of melody that combines so perfectly with Neal’s melodic lead lines. The chemistry of Neal and Steve together as songwriting partners was literally instantaneous, see “Patiently” and “Lights” as great examples of this early creative output. The keyboardist in this video, Jonathan Cain, joined in 1980 when Gregg Rollie decided to leave. Cain, former Baby’s (John Waite) member, an incredible songwriter as well, gave Journey and incredible songwriting trio that would propel them to the heights of their success throughout the 80’s. Enjoy your journey exploring the Journey catalog, there’s much to discover and enjoy even beyond their “hits.” I’ll be along for the ride.

Maybe someone can answer here……what is it that all of these artists did back then to create amazing music and why aren’t modern day artists writing or playing anything like this? I get not using auto tune and all that but there’s gotta be something that’s truly missing

Neal Schon started Journey because if he stayed with Santana he would always be second guitar and he is too good for that

Hey bud, I’m not quite sure how to spell you name and didn’t want to butcher it lol. I watched quite a few, and really liked what you said about soothslayer. Check out another instrumental, I think you’ll like it. G.O.A.T by Polyphia.

Chod have a great Deep Purple song for you. I would love to hear your comments on Jon Lord's and Ian Paice's super performances on this song. Ritchie Blackmore does pretty good as well, lol. Flight of the Rat - UA-cam
