- Its funny no one realizes these guys risk there life every day for our entertainment. This tragic day is a good example of the danger this sport has to offer.
IN MEMORY OF DALE EARNHARDT SR.
"I just hope Dale's ok." I never can listen to those words without tearing up.
What a great human. In the midst of celebrating his brother's historic win, he still is worried about another racer. Especially since the crash didn't look like it was a bad crash and everyone assumed Dale would pop out of his car at any moment. But Darrell, being a driver that had his fair share of crashes, knew it wasn't as simple or "not that bad" of wreck instantly. He's a good man for that.
@@anb7408 for me it was the later interview when he said we’ve lost Dale Earnhardt, I lost it and cried
Me as well I mean his brother just won the superbowl of NASCAR but he keeps looking back at Dale Sr and then finally says I just hope Dale's ok 😢 that the kinda man Dale was. One of his biggest rivals said ❤
Wow, what a gathering of sticks 😂😅😂
I was never a huge NASCAR fan, but for Christmas of 2000 I got a remote control Dale Earnhardt Sr. car and loved it.
Same
He wasn’t using the safety equipment that would have prevented the whiplash that killed him
Same for me kinda. I never was into racing at ALL. But in elementary school, my 3rd grade teacher gave me an Earnhardt poster as part of this thing he did at the end of the year where he'd let students take itmes from the class they really liked. If I remember, he was the only one who did that at the school. Newlin Elm in Burlington. Probably 2008-09ish.
Thanks, Mr. Bolyard. 💯
"TV does not do that impact justice". True.
Yes it was a pretty hard hit. But that is one of the fallacies of a basal skull fracture. You don't have to hit that hard for it to happen inside a driver's head. That's why amateur racers, driving a lot slower speeds, wear HANS Devices too.
HANS Devices
And full face helmets
@@JavierEchavarria-y5l get a job
Nope
@@susandilldine1329 Earnhardt didn’t because he was a scary cat
One of the saddest things to ever happen. I had been a Dale Earnhardt fan way back when he and Ricky Rudd were both driving cars sponsored by Wrangler. After his death I no longer cared to watch NASCAR racing. God bless you Dale Earnhardt....May God bless you and your whole family. You are very much missed by your family, myself, and thousands of other hard core Dale Earnhardt fans. You are a NASCAR legend!!
2001 was a rough year all around. I was in college at the time, and I was in our apartment studying that day- just like on 9/11. I'm pretty sure the world came to a stop on both days for a lot of people like myself. NASCAR hasn't been the same for me since, I grew up watching Dale on TV as a kid in the 80's, he was an unstoppable force that a lot of us who are NASCAR fans will never forget!
Darryl waltrip's commentary, and the emotion he showed here are a signature moment in Nascar history.
Earnhardt lost control trying to pass a other. Period.
@@glennperrytonySeems like SR was trying to block, not pass?
@@OrangeYTT I agree he was blocking
@@glennperrytonyno he didn't. Jesus you fucks just say whatever words come into your heads, don't you? Who cares if it's not even close to the truth, amirite? He was blocking. Air flow was disrupted which caused his car to lose traction and make contact with Ken Schrader and they both went into the wall. You're a moron dude.
@@glennperrytonyno he didn't. I pity how feeble your mind must be to just say random words without knowing whatever in the fuck you are talking about. He wasn't passing anybody. He was blocking that day.
I love how Daryl was first to ask about Dale soon after the race
The human body is so unpredictable. I've seen these guys walk away from flaming roll overs after smashing the wall, and they get out without a scratch. And this "small" crash did him in
Yeah but they didn't hit a wall head on at over 100 miles an hour
This came up on my timeline, don't know why. As a medic, I've seen people killed in crashes less than 30mph, and people walk away in 70mph crashes. These speeds were greater, but, I agree that the human body is unpredictable 😢
It may have looked small but it wasn’t. Basically a head-on collision into a wall.
@@16MedicRN definitely unpredictable because for a car to hit a wall at 100 miles an hour and look like that is pretty impressive. Reminds me of a street race on UA-cam, hit a wall on a drag strip at 170 mph and survived, car was in much worse damage than this. Then a month later dies in a crash going 160mph but this time on a local street into a pole.
@@T3chAndThings it's physics and we have no control over that. I've been amazed over 20 years, people who survived and didn't. Often it doesn't make sense, but it's above my intellect. I may be able to save your life, if your insides or brain haven't been crushed. It's all so sad 😔
I still get choked up watching this 17 years later.
Why? Everything dies. Thats life
Because he cares?
I love this little argument you kids are having 🤗
Delete your social media, your humanity is gone. Such a failure, I hope you've matured since saying such a ridiculous and awful thing, but I doubt it @@fatherdamien69
@@fatherdamien69this wasn't a natural death, tough guy
I will remember this day for the rest of my life. Not because im a hardcore NASCAR fan but because I was watching the race that day with my 9 year old son and the look in his face when they said he died it just broke my heart into pieces. I am crying as im writing this right now. I mean here we have a kid who never met him and only knew about Dale because of me watching NASCAR and he felt so sad and started crying we both cried and a held him tight. After that day NASCAR hasn't been the same for us. I,mean we cheer for Dale jr. of course but is not the same.
I don't know why im telling you'll this but I guess is because we all loved him including people who never even knew him. RIP Dale.
MrElPoderozo1 I used to watch nascar with my dad all the time until Sr. passed... of course we rooted for Jr. too but it just isn’t the same. It’s hard when your hero is literally taken away from the world. It’s not like a career ending injury. It was a life ending accident. That shit is still hard to cope with.
ArabStunna311. Wtf? Whats your problem?
I was in high school at the time, I was watching it live with my family. My dad always rooted for sr and I agree it was never the same after that. It’s still emotional for me and I turned 40 this year.
Not a NASCAR fan either but I did watch the race at my local pub with some friends then went home. My mates called me and told me the sad news!
That’s a bizarre reaction for an adult.
Its still amazes me how people can't understand how this wreck killed Dale. He was turned straight up into the wall almost head on and hit by another car in the side at the same time. The amount of G-forces put on his body would have been unreal. Listen to Waltrip he is instantly concerned because as a driver he understands the kind of impact that a crash like that causes. The spectacular looking barrel rolls with parts flying off look worse but those flying parts and rolls are absorbing energy that the driver isn't. Think about the feeling you get when you slam on brakes instantly and magnify that by over a thousand, that's what happened to Dale. Essentially his body stopped faster than his head and neck. Sad because if he had been wearing a Hans device he probably would have survived this accident.
That change of direction into the wall only slowed him down 8 - 12 mph tops, he hit the wall at at least 170mph.
Yep, 100mph into a wall and then blind sided by a car going 80mph when not wearing the proper restraints = a bad time
Chris H stop being an asshat you have no idea what your talking about, the g force did not kill him it was the impact and how fast the impact was
Asher Neal That's a G-Force man.. lol
Chris H wait so this accident essentially had the same effect as a hanging? It snapped his neck?
I was 6 years old and this was my first race. Even then, the house fell silent and I knew then that something wasn't right. It haunts me now...
Andria Fisher it was fake
CoderC CoderC dale did die
CoderC how It was fake it he died from the accident think before you talk
Andria Fisher I was 7 watching this at a restaurant with my parents 2001 was a horrible year 9/11 happened 7 months after.
i never saw this until now
DW was so torn in that moment. You see him watch Micheal cross the line and go straight to looking at Dale.... The happiest moment turns to the absolute worst moment ever in a matter of hours.... I still have this whole race on VHS I recorded live
Yes, I can't even imagine the emotional roller coaster he was on. And Mikey's big win is forever tainted by the worst day in NASCAR history.. it's never been the same since
"If he can survive this run he'll be okay"...
Bet that guy felt like shit afterwards.
Salvador Buttkiss was he specifically talking about Dale Sr? I noticed that sentence too and thought the irony...
J. W. That was Darrell Waltrip referring to how his brother just needed to hang on for one more lap to win. Darrell was actually one of Dale's good friends you can hear in this broadcast how the joy for his brother winning is quickly overtaken by concern for Dale.
Also talking about Dale Jr. "at a dead run" to the scene was not a great choice of words...
@@dx1450it was a normal choice of words. No one can see the future. You don't know what you don't know. Worrying about what you say because someone might die is about the dumbest shit I've ever heard.
Why? He was talking about his brother needing to survive one more lap without getting passed to win the most prestigious race of the NASCAR season. Had nothing to do with Dale Sr. He felt bad because Dale Sr. was a great friend. Not because of a phrase he used in the commentary.
Such a joyous moment for Mikey and Darrell only to be overshadowed by a dark moment for NASCAR and the Earnhardt family.
At
Least he died doing what he loved
Yes, that's what a woman up the road said when her husband's ATV rolled over on him and killed him.
I don't think I've ever had such a swing in emotions, from being sad to laughing so hard.
Matthew P Blocking faster cars
God! I hate when people say that.
jstrahan2 though I just said it today after reading the whole story of his death, I don't like it either but it's true. Btw there were sooo many ironies in his death😱!
i was in college when this happened and i remember one of my classes we took a test and my professor saying that if Dale won the race we would all get an A. Knowing what had happened and seeing the pain and sadness on his face is something I'll never forget.
??
Dale Earnhardt SR was a great NASCAR driver in the past before he died at the final lap of The 2001 Daytona 500.
He was great in the past before he died. LMAO.
Wow you are blind. the only good thing Jeff did was that Camaro test drive prank.
RF Jordan Jeff Gordon is the new intimidator . Earnhardt was a wimp he was only going 40mph I think I was the only one cheering when he hit that wall.
Matt Smith LMAO @ only 40 mph. Are you trying to troll or really that dumb?
Spaceman Spliff He would have been alive today if he didn't smoke all that meth before the race. Rest in peace legend of life.
Read the NASCAR investigation report.
It took me maybe 3 hours.
Much like an aircraft incident, there were several factors that played into the final, fatal outcome.
It’s really, really interesting if you’re a true NASCAR fan.
It’s a shame that Sterling Marlin had to deal with any blowback.
He had lost a friend, and was absolutely not at fault.
I haven't read it but would like to. Is it easy to find with a Google search? And was it a loss of down force that got him loose? I've always wondered how he got loose since there was no contact between him a Sterling Marlin. Or was there accidental contact?
@@Robbie1075He took the air off his spoiler making slight contact. Watch the overhead shot, really just an unfortunate accident
@@Robbie1075 I can’t remember where I found it, it’s been a few years.
But, after watching it, it’s not such a mystery.
Whether or not there was contact, Earnhardt touched the apron which sent him hard up the track.
The contact with Schrader just before impact was just enough to move him in his seat.
I think Earnhardt had his belts set more for comfort than safety.
All of these things came together in a tragic way.
He apparently slipped in the belts, which may have loaded and torn the belts, which allowed his head to strike the steering wheel, and/or possibly a brace near the seat.
Regardless, he was now a victim of a basilar skull fracture and was essentially dead before his car stopped moving.
I wouldn't call myself a "true" NASCAR fan, but I'm someone with a certain amount of morbid curiosity when it comes to motorsport disasters. Enough to (probably) cause my folks concern as I know of nearly every Formula 1-related tragedy lol.
I managed to find the investigation report as well, complete with photos of the car, schematics and autopsy analyses. I'll give it a read sometime soon.
As for Sterling Marlin, there's some solace in the fact that Dale Jr. absolved him of any responsibility. It really was just a racing deal, as tragic as it was.
@@Robbie1075 wrong its about how he hit his head inside and didnt have the right gear on nothing about other, he chose not to wear the gear, he was old school and it cost him the end
Watched that unfold on television. Dale Earnhardt was also a recent first time winner of that coveted race in 1998 and in my mind was trying to protect his friend, Michael Waltrip's lead just so he experience that same joy that he did. Celebration turned to sadness and sorrow on that Sunday in February. A dark day for the racing community and our nation. You are missed and will never be forgotten Sr.
I'm from SC. my buddy and I went to Daytona Beach that weekend for the first and only time.. That morning the news paper was dedicated to Dale, his accomplishments, family, ect..
He never blocked for anyone, said he never would . He was blocking for his son that day...
I once spoke with a man in the pits of a local track who was part of the early promotion team for the HANS Device. He said he offered one to Dale Sr. about a month before he died. His fatal head injury was exactly what the HANS Device was designed to prevent and may have saved his life. Dale was old school and declined. In Dale's defense it was brand new technology and not that well known. They also look kind of uncomfortable although racers I know say they aren't bad to wear. It was a crying shame to have lost him that way. If his wreck had happened a year or so later he may have been wearing one.
my parents named me after him in 2000 and he died a year later a day before my birthday(I was born on Daytona) and it's fucking surreal to watch this
Sabaktes that's screwed up
nah thats dope. go buy a shirt.
So you guys are a bunch of hilljacks... Cool...
Chris Last That was pretty lame man. All you could come up with is me eating Spaghetti O's? A world of possibilities and you chose that? You might as well have said "You big dumb dumb" or "My dad can beat up your dad". Try harder when you get out of school today.
Your parents must be dedicated fans
I rooted for Dale E since the mid 80's and I was so damn sure that he was alright after this crash, I went for a walk after the race. My son was at his house watching the race and broadcast afterwards and when the announcement was made that Dale was killed, he called me immediately but I wasn't home. He jumped in his truck and came looking for me. He found me and said 'I guess you haven't heard'. I looked him straight in the eye and I knew what he was going to say and I said 'oh no'. He said 'yeah, Dale was killed'. I lost all feeling in my legs and almost fell. I told my son to give me a ride home. The next few days were some of the darkest days I can remember. RIP Dale E. you are and have been ever since, significantly missed by all your fans (I was one of them} and on the tracks of Nascar races.
Me too, watched the whole race, shut it off went to my grandmothers for Sunday dinner. Was getting ready for work the next day pulling up driving directions on Yahoo and the headline shows a picture of Dale 1951-2001, I started balling my eyes out, I must have checked ten websites trying to find someone to say something different, what an awful time I had dealing with it, very sad.
I never was a fan just like tens of thousands others weren't either' I don't miss him and I'm sure they don't neither for the dirty tactics he used while driving and NASCAR letting him get by with it creating drama and making him popular for $$$$$ both him and NASCAR.
I was at that race when this happened stunned and crying like so many other fans, I still miss Dale the real 3
I gave up on NASCAR without the Intimidator,and..I couldn’t stand him but it wasn’t the same sport without him.

I remembered watching this like the back of my hand it was my 8th birthday... it was thee worst birthday present I never asked for. R.I.P "the man in black "
Just because dale thought the headgear was uncomfortable. Rip him
Hardly anyone wore the HANS devices back then. It wasn't required, only advised, until after Dale's death.
Witnessed this at ten years old. Dale was my driver since I was 5. I was devastated later in the day when I got the news. Cried my self to sleep.
I remember watching this race at a friends house. I've been watching NASCAR since before Dale ever got into NASCAR. I've seen many wrecks that looked so much worse than this wreck, so I didn't think much of the wreck when it happened. I've seen them hit the walls straight on and walk away, sometimes hitting it so hard that the car would climb the wall and flip probably 20 times before coming to a stop, and walk away. Sometimes they would have to be cut out of the car before they could walk away. So it shocked the living hell out of me when they said he was dead. He must not have been wearing the proper protection gear is all I can assume.
Bcroft39 dale was a stubborn old blood and rules at the time didnt require the Head and Neck Support device so dale having started before it was invented didnt wear it since he had the choice and his skull broke at the base right where it connects nto the spine either when he slammed back into the seat or it came apart when he was flung forward
I'm sorry that this sounds disrespectful but this is why sticking with the old ways is a terrible idea. Things change for a good reason.
@@MKninjashardly any NASCAR drivers wore the HANS devices before Dale's death. It hadn't been around long, was uncomfortable and was only advised by NASCAR. It was mandatory after, of course.
Those high profile wrecks where the car flips and rolls are so much easier to survive due to the nature of energy dissipation. In an accident where the car has multiple impacts, the energy is absorbed and released in smaller amounts over a period of time whereas in a one hit, high speed accident all of the energy is absorbed and released instantly. Couple that with having his body cinched in with a harness and unmoving while his head is free to move and you have the basilar skull fracture. Fatal most every time.
One of the few times I witnessed my father shed tears. At 9 years old I gave him the news after a friend of his called and confirmed.
why did Dale die from THIS impact? It is just hard to imagine... :( RIP
+AndiBrot When Dale hit the wall, his head flew forward into the steering wheel then went sideways causing the fatal injury at the base of his skull.
AndiBrot As the commentator said, the TV does not do this crash justice. This impact was horrifically dangerous. The car went full force, 200 mph into an unmoving wall. The G's pulled were incredibly high from the sudden stop. However, by today's standards the wreck is well with in survivable range but that is because NASCAR forces all driver to wear the HANS seat belt device (Head and Neck Support). Dale didn't like to wear this device cause he thought it was too restricting and negatively impacted his driving. However the HANS seatbelt device is specifically designed to prevent Basal skull fractures...which is what Dale died of on impact. Truly unfortunate for such a great driver.
EricEbac22 no you were close what happened to dale was that he want to use his original seat belt he allredy used all 3 broke and he went head first on the dash and busted his head and broke his neck and broke his ribs
AndiBrot he had a heart attack then crashed into the wall
he refused to use the hans device that is now mandatory
My girlfriend at the time was throwing my birthday party (my bday is 19th) and had my family over. She was the biggest Earnhardt fan. Needless to say Dale’s tragic death ended the party and really changed our relationship. It had a big impact on us and of course her fandom for him. R.I.P.
Changed the relationship? Sounds like Dale Earnhardt was more her boyfriend than you lol
You know what else had a big impact that day?
DW is right, TV doesn't show just how bad a wreck like that is. I've watched that wreck maybe 500 times, and STILL to this day it didn't look that bad.
These long camera shots don't do justice to just how fast and how much ground is covered by these cars...
Dang on the last lap? What a bummer
Do we know why he lost control of his car before slamming into the yellow one & the wall?
My beloved wife Jill was Michael Waltrip's personal private flight attendant from 2006 to 2014 when MWR (Michael Waltrip Racing) still had three planes (two props, one jet). Jill adored Michael and always made sure his needs were taken care of when in flight. In 2014 Michael shut down his plane operations and sold his planes. Jill was then laid off, and she retired after a combined 43 years as a flight attendant (35 years with major carriers before MWR). A few years ago I wrote a letter to Michael and told him Jill would love to hear from him. No reply!! Jill was hurt but tried to hide and deflect the hurt. So much for famous people who get so self-absorbed that they think their you-know-what doesn't stink.
Damn that story took a dark turn
Good chance he probably never got the letter. Not vouching for him as a human but mail these days is hit or miss.
Way to slander someone having no clue what actually happened. That says everything about your character (or lack thereof) and nothing at all about his.
My God, I remember the day this happened. I was in seventh grade in Reno with my family and saw it in the circus circus TV screens. I couldn't believe it. I loved Nascar and racing from a young age. My first PlayStation game was Nascar racing and Dale's car was my favorite to use each race. May he race in piece.
this was the day Nascar died too-and I wasn't a Earnhardt fan but I had a lot of respect for him and I knew he was good for this sport-I admit Dale was starting to grow on me a little but not enough to say I was a fan
Holy hell that must have been bittersweet for the winner... So you won the Daytona 500, but also one of the most famous Nascar racers of all time had a freak crash and died during that same race. God damn that is rough for the person who won! Even his coach (dad?) was immediately worried as hell about Dale a few seconds after the race was over. Thats just brutal that this crash killed Dale, compared to some of the Nascar crashes we have seen since then.
I Feel Bad For Dale Earnhart Jr. 😢

Everyone's got their story - I met Sr and Jr once at a party down here in Charlotte in the 80s...Sr was 30-something and Jr was 10 I think, and I was the oldest kid, so I was unofficially tasked with looking out for the kids playing in the back yard and making sure there weren't any accidents. Dale Jr of course idolized his dad at that time (who wouldn't) and talked about him nonstop. And understandably so - Sr was inside with the other grown-ups. Didn't talk a whole lot but his energy really just took up the room. He had a way of staring right through you, and without even doing or saying anything was definitely the alpha male of the room. And probably everywhere he went. His "Intimidator" nickname didn't come from just the racetrack I guess!
Its almost like when Dale's car turned right, it was heading straight for heaven...when it hit the wall, Dale went from Earth to Heaven. Just a way of viewing it... RIP Dale #3
I love your way of viewing it "Motor sports". I truly wish America in general held the same base views, that obviously, you do, and I myself as well. If we could get our country back to that, back to as we were founded, as "One Nation Under God!" then we could go right back to being the most prosperous, mightiest nation the world has ever seen. Why is it so hard for people to admit and see that the decline of America started at the same time many/most Americans told God, basically, " Okay God we got it from here as everything is going great! and then moved to Okay God not only do we have it from here we don't need you from here on out, and following that to, Get out of here God, we don't need want or desire you, in fact we'll teach our children that the Bible is nothing but a collection of fairy tales and outright lies, furthermore we're going to use liars-oops sorry about that, Lawyers to impose the will of the few over the will of the majority (undermining democracy in the process) and remove Christ and anything Christian anywhere it's mentioned in public or it's symbols appear doing anything and everything possible to run God out of town as it we're. Ironically after all of that, when incidents such as 9/11 or other horrible things like that occur or now that it's become obvious to people of all levels of intelligence that America is in trouble we are in decline and may never recover, or when they watch a small number of extremely greedy and immoral men come very close to destroying the worlds economies and plunging the world in to anarchy and chaos in the process, by stealing tens of billions of dollars from their own customers, stealing millions of Americans retirement funds and homes directly causing untold deaths and suffering on the people who trusted them. Then watched these people not only walk away from it without any being held accountable but being forced to use their own tax money to "bail them out" yet those tax dollars went to give themselves give themselves huge multi million dollar bonuses (I suppose in reward for their successfull theft as their companies were in shambles) and brand new corporate luxery aircraft, and America went into full on depression even though they tried to call it recession causeing far more misery, death, broken families, lost jobs and homes. All the while everyone wailing "Where's God?" Why did God allow this to happen? How could God let these greedy people get away with this outrage without punishment because they paid off the politicians? How could a living loveing God permit this, if he was real and if we were loved as he promised? my question is, How could god help us, God left town because we ran him out, said we didn't believe, called him a liar and hate monger and all manner of bad names. God didn't help because we ran God off, told him America didn't want him anymore and we are paying for that and will continue to pay.
America became the great country it became because we we partners with God we were one nation under God!! plain and simple! I.hope we turn back to God, learn our lesson like gods people did, and again receive the blessing we did as a nation under God. I believe that's the only possible way we can avoid a race war that ultimatly results in the utter destruction of the black American and causes irreperable damage to America both domestically and abroad, snuffing out the light of true hope America used to shine throughout the world, dim now it would be gone forever then.
John L. Do you have no respect for the deceased? Rubbing is a huge part of NASCAR, the same way hitting is a part of hockey. If someone was rubbing on your side and they were driving offensively, as they should, would you turn them into the wall and try to seriously hurt them on purpose?

Brandon Votaw
2001 is illumanati
its cursed
but ppl say his seatbelt broke and then he had a heart attack
I retired from General Motors 5 year's later and he made me so proud week after week year after year NASCAR has never been the same.....
The nick name intimidater was givin to Earnhardt ,if he didn't have the car or skill to win he would result to purposely wrecking a fellow driver. The intimidater doesn't fit as well as the cheater.
Why are you such a dick
You serious right now? Dale Earnhardt is a 7 time Winston Cup Champion, the Man Won 76 Races. At no point in His Career was Lack of talent part of the equation. He's 1 of the top 3 Greatest Stockcar Drivers in History, Period...
I never followed NASCAR particularly, but Earnhardt was a name that transcended the sport. I can only imagine the feeling of disbelief at the outcome being similar to seeing Aryton Senna lose his life at Imola in ‘94.
It’s a tragic loss, but Earnhardt’s death probably has since saved hundreds of lives or serious injuries by highlighting the benefits of the HANS device.
Rip Dale
That dude is right in saying that tv doesnt do the impact justice, because its still really hard to tell.
If you look closely at about 1:04, you’ll see a bird fly right over the track, sadly it was a sign
Right after that the narrator said if you can *survive* this run you’ll be okay 😢
I had a friend who was a huge NASCAR fan. He tried and tried to get me into watching. I finally agreed and this was the first race I ever watched start to finish. Obviously. I knew who Dale Earnhardt was. I knew he was one of the biggest names in the sport. To lose him on the first race I watched, I almost felt like I jinxed him. DW seemed like the only one who was immediately concerned about Dale. A happy as he was for his little brother, he kept looking back and saying, "I hope Dale's alright." Very sad day. I didn't watch another race until Carl Edwards started driving the Aflac car. (I worked for Aflac at the time.)
did weregonnalose bring you here?
James Norton YES
James Norton No but I can see how. LOL
I didn't watch this, I wasn't much into NASCAR back then (kind of into now but not really following it) but I knew of Dale Earnhardt and I remember watching the early evening Sportscenter and seeing it breaking news on the bottom of the screen of losing him and my heart dropped
Worst day in motor sports history.
There have much more worse days.
No
1994 San Marino GP anyone?
Le Mans 1955, 84 people died that day.
I remember seeing this and thinking how could he have been killed in such a minor crash. They are buckled in tight with the roll cages, helmet, etc...I've seen crashes where the car does multiple cartwheels, catching on fire but the driver survives. This one puzzled me. I'd heard he'd had a heart attack later on but not sure if that was true.
Idk if im the only one, I know that he didn't wear the haans device, but there's been so many other fatal looking crashes, and i know it's only video but again there's been worse in videos, it didn't look like that hard of a hit. I never have understood how he got killed when the wreck doesn't look that bad. every other omg wreck you see you see is worse than this. even on video.
Tiffany Chapman Yes, there have been worse crashes. Dale wasn't wearing his seat belt. R.I.P.
to be fair most drivers did not wear the hans device until after this crash
That's what I thought. The wreck he had earlier in the race looked worse than this one. Doesn't look like they go as fast as they do. I figure even in minor crashes it can be worse than if it happened at regular highway driving speeds.
Being a firefighter, I can assure you you could die going 15mph in a car. It depends on the impact, impact will get you every time.
The stupidity you see on UA-cam.. smh
After watching this it makes me prouder to know I have his seat from his nascar years. I must say he was a skinny fellow, I'm 15 (5'5" 97 lbs) and can fit very snugly. Am turning it into a sim rig for racing.
My parents named me Dale after Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Your parents are idiots
Lol 😂 your parents sound pathetic
Dale I feel sorry for your mother
They didn't. Nobody just simply has their real first name as their youtube username. Your parents are idiots if they did that...
Dale You dranking that Budweiser?
Can never forget this happened on my daughter's birthday February 18th 2001.
sorry to hear that i remember that day
If you look closely you can see some kind of light discharge where his head would have hit the wheel.
Spaceman Spliff think that's the sun reflecting off his visor?
RF Jordan It was his soul ripping out.
Thats pretty damn sadistic
original footage how come I saw you turning up your iPod speaker if it was not recorded there on that iPod I doubt it then it would not be switching positions it would stay in one seat row in the same space the whole time.
because its a screen recording from a VHS. And its not monetized thank you very much. (IT WAS A MAC BOOK FYI)
Hey Derel waltrip!!! (Derel cartrip in 2006 cars movie)
I watched it happen live. 9 times out of 10 then Dale Sr. would have walked away from that crash.
This was the 10th time.
R.I.P. Intimidator 🕊
Dale Earnhardt and Pink Floyd.... both last big hit was the wall
clever
Dude...
May god have mercy on your soul.
I’m a huge NASCAR fan and for that I cry every time I watch this
He's going left he's going left and another left and another left and.... a right? Wait....
islanderkush doobies bruhhhh
That's funny but at the same time that's sick
Thank you for your service!
Look: 95 - Houston. (Lightning McQueen's number!?!?!??!!)
I still get goosebumps to this day. We miss you Dale!
#RIPLegend
Daryl is so emotional calling the end of this race as if he knew or felt something would or had gone terribly wrong
dale sr must of died of a heart attack during the crash
Su b oh yeah, his death OBVIOUSLY had nothing to do with the impact
He died when his skull broke from his spine because of a lack of head restraint. After this crash, the hans device was quickly adopted.
jesus christ almighty, just imagining that is awful.
Kelly Sandford yes. He died from a basilar skull fracture. He hit the wall at 180 mph and he was thrown forward and his chin struck the steering wheel. He died instantly. Theres an interview that the medic who went in the car after the crash did n she said she already knew he was dead because he was slumped over on his side and she said she looked in his eyes n knew he was gone. Ill send you the link if i can find it
Chris Harrington did you find the link??
When you see the crash at ground level, you realize how incredibly fast he was going when he hit that wall head on.
nascar is boring af
Then why'd you click on a Nascar video?
Same reason I did of course to watch the car wrecks and deaths of imbeciles going around in circles with nothing else better to do 😂
toomanybears opinion*
Michael Aleman Sr. Lel as a 12 year old i can say i remember my family when i was a baby everybody would gather for the race and now its just plain ass boring shit
toomanybears Only good part is the crashes.
I was there in turn 4. I could feel the impact in the stands. NASCAR hasn’t been the same since. I still have the program and matchbox car they were giving away.
This was the last race I watched. Dale was my favorite. This race crushed me
I wasn’t a NASCAR fan but I watched it when I was bored.
I cried because I saw someone die for real. It was too much for me as a nine year old.
The look on Schraders face said it all as he walked away from Dales car, that’s when I knew it was not going to be good.
I wasnt i to nascar much but grandpa from Tennessee was so i was too. I was just 11 when this happened we had earnhardt Christmas ornaments and everything. I was a fan because i loved grandpa and he was a fan. Ya just dont forget some memories.😢
It really did look like a minor collision with the wall. The speed can't be conveyed when watching on TV.
Something that gives me solace is that Dale's last sight before his death was his son and best friend in 1st and 2nd place... there's not many better last sights than that
to this day it still didn't look like that bad of a crash.. i mean ive seen cars take flight and roll 10 times and flip and catch on fire and the guy still walks away.. just one of those freak accidents
Darrell Waltrip did not want to be in the booth during that moment. Between being overjoyed that his brother just got his first NASCAR win in the biggest race on the circuit, and being worried sick about Michael's boss and car owner, "TV does not do that justice"....he didn't want to say it... nobody did...but they KNEW the unthinkable had just happened. God bless the DEI drivers and their boss. Long live "the black number 3"
For me, any interest in NASCAR ended that day. It could never be the same.
I remember this like it was yesterday I’ll never forget so tragic
