Another preventable death. It was described as a freak accident, but an aeroscreen probably would have saved him. So sad. Justin Wilson, 37, was struck by a piece of flying debris in the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania in August. An inquest in Northampton heard race leader Sage Karam hit a barrier at 200mph, scattering debris on the track. Father-of-two Wilson was hit on the helmet and died the next day. Coroner Anne Pember read a statement from Wilson's father, Keith, who described the event in lap 179 of 200 as a "freak accident".
I get triggered when someone uses that phrase. What have the two to do with each other? The person dying would rather be still alive, regardless of the way he died.
this is the type of stuff i am paranoid about. dying so fast from such a quick event there is absolutely nothing you can do but accept your accept you died. i often ponder what people see and hear in there last moments and i cant help but think he had absolutely no clue but was focused on avoiding the car and the path ahead and then to be instantly dead i cant imagine. edit: what miracle he didn't impact sage for he wouldn't of been walking away on his own.
The crash did not kill him. He hit a piece of debris from the other car at full speed. The piece of debris hit him in the face. You can see it in the replay at 7:36 bounce of his helmet and fly high into the air. From then on he just coasted into the wall. He was basically dead by then.
Unfortunately we can't stop things like this from happening. Whether it be Justin, Dan Wheldon, Dale Earnhardt or a long list of others it's always a tragic loss. The only solace that we as fans have is that they died doing the thing they loved.
Actually, what happens is the nosecone of the already crashed car bounces into the head of Justin Wilson, that knocks him out and sends him towards the wall with no brakes applied, full throttle. Today, that wouldn't happen as the Halo would take the impact. So, we HAVE stopped exactly THIS from happening.
Dale Earnhardt died from a neck injury that would have been at least 99% preventable with the implementation of the HANS device, but due to Senior's stubbornness of not wearing one, resulted in his death and NASCAR then making it mandatory that all drivers wear one.
It’s always tragic when someone dies especially in a sport. At least we know they died doing something they loved. RIP Justin Wilson and all others that have died in their sport.
I have been around most kinds of racing all most all my life, but I love all the in\\INDY cars and the LIGHTS. BUT for the life of me I can never figure out why the crash crew and first respondents have to literally jump up and down the get the bus (sorry fireman's talk for ambulance) to roll and why when they see a hit this hard they are not lining up at the exit to the track after the first respondents are on the track. I know I am only talking maybe 2 or maybe 3 minutes, but having worked the bus for many years that couple of minutes can make all the difference. And I am sure that the crews and families would feel better if they saw them almost right there waiting. Also for life flight to start up the chopper takes a couple of minutes so if the bus crew were right there again if needed that couple of minutes to do the start up of the motor might again be the difference. So please excuse my ignorance but I have spent my life being right there on ALL emergencies. be it a fire, a shooting, or a adult/child trapped. Never in the way but ready at a seconds notice to jump in to rescue a person in need. I understand that a hit this hard usually will mean I am loading someone into a bag but all the same.

@@Kartdriver1 Yep, and on the opposite end you have Grosjean's horrific crash in Bahrain where he walked away in relatively good shape all things considered. Smiley died because the cars back then had absolutely no structural integrity (survival cells weren't a thing at all), so his car hitting the wall was essentially a rolling bomb set off... Bourdais had a relatively similar crash at Indy after his failed attempt to correct a slide and he got away with a fractured breastbone and ribs-still bad indeed, but better be this than a fatality of course...

Lycan_Jedi Pause exactly @ 7:00 (as soon it goes from 6:59 to 7:00) the car on the right corner of the screen and NOT the middle. That's the fatal crash! And it's clear that it's a front left tire lockup!
Again that's because of the speed he was carrying. He was starting to spin because he was veering off too quickly. I know the car that had the fatality, I've watched this footage multiple times.
hamzterix That’s not what got him. It’s possible he was conscious very shortly after the contact with debris but the impact with the wall sped the process. Look at Allan McNish’s fatal crash. He was reportedly conscious for a while then fell dead. That’s because the brain takes a while to swell from an impact.
This is the first thing that favoured me for the use of halo's in F1, After seeing leclerc halo being smashed by Alonso's wheel finalised that halo's should be used in all single open cockpit racing car's, I know they're not aesthetically pleasing but it won't be long before the engineers will stream line it to the shape of the car so it won't look as bad, least it reduces chance's of death, maybe this guy would be here if they had a halo, I was anti halo until I seen this, sad.
It is the flying piece of debris that impacted his head, long before he hit the wall. Likely brakes were an automatic response for his legs around the moment of impact.
One of the two guys hosting this in Russian is a racer himself, and he mentioned that both - brake and the accelerator - seems to be pushed on his final roll.
Karam is FUCKING lucky, look at the slo-mo where we can see the nosecone hitting Wilson...it's just as if it almost landed on Karam as well afterwards ! And there's a first car launching the nosecone into the air before Wilson came in... lucky, lucky there weren't a couple additional very bad injuries there... R.I.P Justin Wilson :(
the guy that died was the 2nd guy that crashed. he didn't die from impact with a wall. debris from the first guy that crashed hit him in the helmet and killed him.
I mean I know the halo helps but there’s still wide openings in the front, perhaps if they put some type of fiberglass shield in the front of it to close it off completely it would prevent any piece from slipping through. Maybe they do, idk, I don’t watch enough Indy or f1 to know.
The indy/f1 pieces are very big, that's why the halo was designed, for prevent big and fast pieces hitting the drivers head.. , fiber glass would be useless at such speeds like 230mph, since it would break...
Hopefully this incident will no longer happen now that Indy Car has adopted the aero screen technology to all their cars. R.I.P. Justin Wilson. You will never be forgotten!
Goes to show, when it's your time, is your time.. Period. The stars aligned so to speak.. Me, and my buddies happen to be racing NASCAR '15 @ Pocono when we found out. We did a silent salute lap in his honor.
Surely the first wall impact by Justin's car was severe enough to have contributed to the fatality. That infield wall needs reprofiling or upgraded. Do tracks in the US have tyre walls?
Ovals tend to have SAFER barrier (a trade name, from what I can gather) in front of the walls at or around the outside of the corners, which is deformable like a tyre barrier would be, without spreading a load of tyres into the path of cars travelling at speeds of sometimes 200plus miles per hour. The normal walls on the inside of corners and next to the straights still remain. As does the catch fencing - which protects from cars flying into spectators or off into the scenery beyond the track. The fence posts in the catch fencing are a huge safety problem though. Road courses (what are generally called circuits in other parts of the world) are where Indycars would encounter tyre barriers - there’s less chance there of tyres ending up on track after an accident. Tyre barriers are also found surrounding street courses, along with SAFER barriers, walls and catch fencing. As a general rule (though there are exceptions for some corners etc.) road courses are the safest tracks, followed by street courses, and the most dangerous tracks being the ovals- the smaller tracks having a lower average speed than the super speedways. So the most dangerous place to have an accident is probably into the inside of a corner on a super speedway. Some drivers new to Indycar refuse to drive in ovals, on safety grounds - often leaving the car vacant for another brave/daredevil/desperate (delete as you see fit) driver to temporarily take their seat. I have a love/hate relationship with the ovals. They’re awesome, and a close race can be exciting - especially when you consider the speeds involved, but when it goes wrong it can go wrong big-style.
He died instantly when a piece of debris came flying off another car hit his head. He was not part of the wreck and getting hit with debris was a freak accident

The replay clearly shows that the blue came around the corner full speed and a flying piece of debris from the first crash, hit the driver of the blue car in the face. After he got hit, he coasted into the wall. He was basically already dead before he hit the wall. The debris he hit was part of the first car that crashed in the corner. Watch the replay. At 7:36 you can easily see it. You will see the piece of debris fly way high into the air after it bounces off the drivers face and the announcers say _"Aye Aye AYE!!"
He didn't have to die. I am glad the halo is being adopted everywhere.
Very very sad... RIP Justin Wilson
Why did it take so long before Karam came out of his car? When he walked to the ambulance he seemed to be okay

Probably rocked him. He did hit hard

I remember reading somewhere that Sage got death threats for this and people wanted him charged with murder. They did the same to Sterling Marlin when Earnhardt crashed.
Because we have very stupid people in this country who don't understand that accidents happen.
Praying so sorry for the loss, God Bless you all, and your families.
Another preventable death. It was described as a freak accident, but an aeroscreen probably would have saved him. As racing organisations dragged their feet for years regarding more stringent driver safety regulations, drivers continued to needlessly die. Shameful.
Condolences to Justin Wilson's loved ones.
WOW I am so SADDENED by this! My brother was 21 when he died behind the wheel (not a race car driver but he was racing over 100mph) he died instantly and all I can think about these two young men was: it MUST have been their time because the way these two died is one in a million odds. R.I.P Justin wilson you are a great driver
2:55 woah that running is trippy
And here did nothing when he got there. Just stood around uselessly
I see a large debris hits his helmet at a high speed, so the helmet broke? Or did he die at impact to the wall?
He hit that piece of debris at full speed. The crash afterword was just incidental because he was basically already dead by the time he hit that wall.
So sad for Justin Wilson to be involved in such a freak accident. He died doing what he loved. R.I.P.
I get triggered when someone uses that phrase. What have the two to do with each other? The person dying would rather be still alive, regardless of the way he died.
@@bramluyckx8404 pretty sure I'd rather die quickly doing what I enjoy than die miserable and unhappy.
There is no such thing as a freak accident. I don't know why people use that phrase.
this is the type of stuff i am paranoid about. dying so fast from such a quick event there is absolutely nothing you can do but accept your accept you died. i often ponder what people see and hear in there last moments and i cant help but think he had absolutely no clue but was focused on avoiding the car and the path ahead and then to be instantly dead i cant imagine. edit: what miracle he didn't impact sage for he wouldn't of been walking away on his own.
Live every day like it's your last because when your time is up its up.
Justin was such a nice guy. Still sad years later.
Hopefully this is the final fatal crash in Indycar history
What injuries did justin Wilson have
The crash did not kill him. He hit a piece of debris from the other car at full speed. The piece of debris hit him in the face. You can see it in the replay at 7:36 bounce of his helmet and fly high into the air. From then on he just coasted into the wall. He was basically dead by then.
The time taken for ambulance and medical staff to arrive was an absolute disgrace for officials in a professional sport. Bloody disgraceful!
wow i havent noticed jw was death...in italy there was no news about...sad to know it only now :-(
Is there an English version of this?
Unfortunately we can't stop things like this from happening. Whether it be Justin, Dan Wheldon, Dale Earnhardt or a long list of others it's always a tragic loss. The only solace that we as fans have is that they died doing the thing they loved.
Actually, what happens is the nosecone of the already crashed car bounces into the head of Justin Wilson, that knocks him out and sends him towards the wall with no brakes applied, full throttle.
Today, that wouldn't happen as the Halo would take the impact. So, we HAVE stopped exactly THIS from happening.
I honestly hope you're right Pope.
Dale Earnhardt died from a neck injury that would have been at least 99% preventable with the implementation of the HANS device, but due to Senior's stubbornness of not wearing one, resulted in his death and NASCAR then making it mandatory that all drivers wear one.
Actually you can stop things like this from happening. It's called mandated driver and track safety regulations.

It was sad but because he wasn't part of the accident and I think at first no one caught that he was hit with debris that badly.

yes justin died the next day i was there but didn't know it until i drove back to upstate n.y the next day SO SAD he was better person then a racing driver!

This crash proves that Karam had learned from Gordon Smiley's crash NOT to try and correct a slide because it would've been so much worse if he did!
DemonAsh40 oof, Smileys was terrible...
@@ursuss100 Smiley was out of control of the car when he crash he said i'm going to break 210mph or die trying and that exactly what happened!
7:36 shows just have severe the debris impact was. The piece that struck Wilson’s head is launched dozens of feet into the air.
Driver's side rear bumper pod hit him in the head - very tragic, and ironic, as this part was actually introduced as a "safety" innovation :(
Wasn't the pod. It was the nose cone.

RIP. But how did he managed to hit the brake and lockup after the debris impact if he instantly died?
He didn't, the tires just started spinning because of the speed he started to veer off at. He was starting to spin out he was veering off so hard.
Lycan_Jedi
Pause exactly @ 7:00 (as soon it goes from 6:59 to 7:00) the car on the right corner of the screen and NOT the middle.
I think he means Allan Simonsen
That's not debris, that's entire nose cone of a car. Probably a 100 lb. piece of carbon fiber, traveling at 150 MPH.
Whoa , omg . So he had chance of survival , so sad 😏
Was Karam involved in Justin Wilson's fatal crash?
Yep, Sage crashed and the nose cone from him car hit Justin in the head.
Halo does not protect from blunt impact, only whiplash.

It is the flying piece of debris that impacted his head, long before he hit the wall. Likely brakes were an automatic response for his legs around the moment of impact.

Yes, Sage Karam crashed and the nose cone struck Justin on the head at over 200mph.
the guy that died was the 2nd guy that crashed. he didn't die from impact with a wall. debris from the first guy that crashed hit him in the helmet and killed him.
I didn't even see him wreck!! It was if, he just came sliding into the scene after the other wreck!! RIP Young Man...
Poor dude. His death in part resulted in the modern halo design to protect the head of drivers. His organs saved a life after the crash as well.

ByteMe How he should feel guilty goes beyond me.
They’re awesome, and a close race can be exciting - especially when you consider the speeds involved, but when it goes wrong it can go wrong big-style.
i was at this race and it was a lot worse in person.
