Isn't the internet wonderful! That we can communicate with people all over the world, share our recipes, our lives, and say whatever we feel like! I love your scone technique, thank you! I am in Hillsboro,Missouri.
Our Tattie Scones have allways been made with Mashed Suds that had Milk and Butter they turn out perfect also have just discovered frozen Mashed Spuds and we made really good Tattie Scones from that believe it or or not.
Belfast Fries always had Potato scones, Farls, pink breakfast sausage, bacon, Canadian ham, eggs and sweet grilled tomatoes with the HP sauce on the side...mmmm...had many of them in my life and the Potato scones, tomatoes with the bacon was the loveliest part...
Put that rolling action at 3 minutes on loop, lovely. 😊 what are we eating tatty scones with? I like a couple of fried eggs with a lot of yolk, as I’m sure most do. Any other ideas?
I've been making tattie scones for years, but i never put oil in the pan, just a little flour. I've been checking all the recipes to see if i'm doing it wrong, you're the only other person I've viewed that doesn't use oil. Thank you for the recipe
Putting oil in the pan just makes it a bigger cleaning job afterwards! The flour stops them sticking in the pan so there's no need really. Thanks for the comment!
Hi Martin, how do I find your blog. Can you add it please. Loved your recipe hope you do more. Thanking you. Would love too floury Scottish rolls and custard tarts loved them when i lived in Scotland.
Thanks - and apologies for the very late reply! Breakfast rolls are definitely a Scottish specialty. Here's a link to the Otter Lodge blog : www.otterlodgeskye.co.uk/category/food/
A huge thank you for sharing the recipe! I stayed in Scotland for a few months before and potato scone is probably the thing that I missed the most ever since I came back! My mouth is watering just by watching this! Will definitely give it a go tomorrow! I would like to know though, by cold mashed potatoes did you mean cooled down (so room temperature) or literally cold from the fridge? Thanks! :) sending love from Hong Kong x
Hi Patricia, many thanks for your comments! You can find our blog here: www.otterlodgeskye.co.uk/2015/04/how-to-make-tattie-scones/ Floury Scottish rolls might be a possibility (another breakfast favourite). Interestingly, custard tarts are not something that people tend to made traditionally in Scotland, but a custard slice is always popular.
Thank you. I’m having a really hard time figuring out the measurements. In Canada we use cups teaspoons etc. so I don’t know how much floor to add.Helppppp lol
I had some cheesy mash left over had mustard powder, eggs and sour cream in as was the recipe. Had some left over so this morning I added flour till I could mix in no more, cut in triangles like you did and heated in a pan. Delicious with crispy bacon
Great video. I was wondering, when you say not to add milk to the potatoes, do you just boil the potatoes in water until soft and then mash them dry? Or is there any other "prep" or ingredient during the mashing part? I am eager to try this. Thanks.
Hi Martín im from spain and i want to try this recipe but i dont know if you only eat te tattie scones or you add any sauce. Can you answer me please? Thanks for the vídeo your accent is so cool :)
Hi there. Tattie scones are normally eaten at breakfast with things like fried eggs and bacon, but my favourite way of eating them is warm from the pan with a bit of butter. My partner likes them fried in oil until crispy. The sauce is up to you!
500g of already cooked mashed potato, cooled to room temperature. There's a bit of shoogle room in this recipe, so if you start out with about 600g of raw potatoes in their skins, it should work out OK.
We call them tattie breed or fadge in Northern Ireland, Mark. Please could you explain what 'stovies' are? Have heard of them, but dunno what they/it is. Thank you 👍👍👍
OK, stovies are a dish using leftovers, usually some kind of meat with potatoes and sometimes other vegetables. They're chopped up, mixed together and heated up in a pan on top of the stove. Saying that, you can also get ready - meal stovies in Scotland that you stick in the microwave.
In Scotland we we would normally eat tattie scones with a cooked breakfast: eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. They're also nice just fresh with a bit of butter as a snack. You can buy them from the supermarket here but they're just not the same!

These scones seem to be the same as the Potato Farls my mother would make. She was from Belfast (born 1912).
My kids loved them. Thank you so much for sharing.
Love from Germany
Thanks! Our kids love them too!
This is the best video on tattie scones i've seeon the net!

Thanks Lauren! The cooked tatties can be at room temperature, they don't have to be refrigerated. Very best wishes from the Isle of Skye!

Tattie scones are a breakfast favourite at Otter Lodge. Here's how we make them.
Thank you.

As a guide, try two cups of mashed potato to one cup of flour. Hope this helps!
Amazing, still at least one Scottish person left on the Isle of Sky.
There's still a few of us aboot!
Skye!
Finally, an easy and delicious tattie scones recipe!
Thanks, that's great. We like to keep things simple!
Hi Martin, can I use olive oil instead?
I had some cheesy mash left over had mustard powder, eggs and sour cream in as was the recipe.
Had some left over so this morning I added flour till I could mix in no more, cut in triangles like you did and heated in a pan. Delicious with crispy bacon
That sounds great! Have to give it a try.
Martin when you say not to use milk to mash the potatoes ,what do you mash yours with?just some of the boiled water? Thanking you
Nothing! Once you've cooked the potatoes just mash them dry. No liquid required.

+justthesteve3 Yes, It's just boiled or steamed potatoes, mashed dry with nothing added. Simple - nothing complicated!
I'll try this thanks, i like a tattie scone but the recipe i have isn't very good.
when you cook mash do you put cream, butter salt n pepper in?
Pure and simple potatoes, nothing added, works best.
Hi Martín im from spain and i want to try this recipe but i dont know if you only eat te tattie scones or you add any sauce. Can you answer me please? Thanks for the vídeo your accent is so cool :)

Is that 1/2kg of potatoes in their skins before peeling or 1/2kg of potatoes after peeling, cooking and mashing please?
500g of already cooked mashed potato, cooled to room temperature. There's a bit of shoogle room in this recipe, so if you start out with about 600g of raw potatoes in their skins, it should work out OK.
Our Mash a;ways has Milk and ours always turn out perfect.

Otter Lodge Bed and Breakfast Thanks very much! I read the Broons and Oor Wullie! MawBroon and Wullie's Maw are always making stovies!! 😂😂😂
Forgot to ask do you grease the frying pan or not?
No problem, just keep the pan dry. Greasing the pan will just make it harder to clean :-) The flour on the scones should stop them sticking.
The humble tattie scone wae a wee spread of butter folded then devoured, washed doon wae a cold can of scottish girders iron brew.
Normal flour or self raising?
Normal flour is best
Plain or SR flour?
Plain flour works best.
fuck, been craving these for weeks and my sister made mince and tatties last week and I failed to steal the tatties to make these ,lol
I can make this in CHILE😊
Maybe try them with chupe :-)
It's like the Indian Aloo (Potato) Paratha.
Yes, there seems to a be a lot of similar types of flatbread around the world. Potatoes are very versatile!
what do you eat these with?
In Scotland we we would normally eat tattie scones with a cooked breakfast: eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. They're also nice just fresh with a bit of butter as a snack. You can buy them from the supermarket here but they're just not the same!
cool. Ill do the same thing. Can you make them the day before?
They're better if they're fresh (they would probably be OK, though)
"So that all the potato scones are the same size..." , then makes two - one larger than the other!
Canny whack a Gid tatie scone!
Need a version with subtitles. (joking. My girlfriend is from Fife and even I'm having a hard time understanding him. :P )
