Fundy Footpath: What I Wish I Knew Before I Started

  • I wanted to throw together a video noting some of the aspects of the trail not necessarily discussed in the official guidebook or other online materials, and where my personal experience revealed them to be hyperbolic/misleading. In short, a summary of the main thoughts I had in the week following my completion of the trail (June 2022).
    Link to my full pack details for additional context (spoiler... it was heavy):

    Some background on the Fundy Footpath is that it is an ~65km trail along the coast of the Bay of Fundy (New Brunswick side). It is a thru hike that can either be started within Fundy National Park or a private access tourist centre at Big Salmon River. Both directions will be equally painful, but if you have a Parks Canada pass already then there is no fee to leave your vehicle at the national park and you can start or finish at any time of day (whereas the Big Salmon side closes at 5/8pm depending on time of year).

    Thank you very much for this post-trail analysis. You're right about the difficulty getting recent information - plus the confusion (just me?) with everything out there having similair names. Fundy Trail, Parkway, Footpath, Park, Salmon this, that and the other thing... oy vay! Anyway, really appreciate your thoughts, esp around bugs and footwear. I'll be going yoyo this week 🤞

    I just completed this trail on my long weekend this year. Very difficult without 2 vehicles that’s for sure. We ended up going out to Martin head island for one of the nights, it was so beautiful!

      Great timing! That location looked very appealing, it hurt me to pass it by to keep up the mileage haha. Was it busy when you were there or is that indeed overblown?

      @@curtis.strange there were lots of atvs on the other shore but none of them came over to the island! It was pretty quite after dusk.

      Awesome, sounds like a perfect setup especially if the bay was as camp as it was a few weeks ago!

      Glad ya got some value from it! It's certainly a niche trail so hopefully it gets more funding and accessibility as more people give it a go (although the exclusivity is a bit of the charm)

    5:02 Yay! This is one of the big things I have been wondering about. I want to take this trail when I visit Canada in a few weeks. thanks for going first and sharing the essentials. Looks like I will have to bring a bit more gear than expected. I am going to have the same transport problem (no car) but I half plan to rest up in Alma and figure it out from there.

      Glad it filled in some gaps for you! It is a bit unfortunate that there are not enough resources to facilitate hikers in the area but with some creative planning or sheer will you can make it work all the same.

    Thanks for this video! You’re right. There’s not a lot of good info out there on this supposed “one of the top 50 trails in the world.”
    8:20 in my experience there are people who use hiking poles and then there are people that don’t use them YET. The number of people I’ve seen converted over the years is in the 90% range. Just load up those pack and send them down a steep grade. Their mind figures it out fast. Haha

    Thanks for this! We’ve done Chignecto twice - camping and cabins. Have you done it? How would you say the trail compares?

      Sorry I'm way behind on notifications. It's very similar in terms of terrain, but quite a bit longer. The footpath felt a lot more isolated even though I actually crossed paths with more people there. My only caveat to recommending it is how boring it can be solo (not really grand vistas, etc). But It's a good test of skills for thru-hikes which are pretty rare in the Maritimes.

    I have been watching a few a your videos sine I am searching for a maybe 4 days hike. I would lime your opinion. Is Cape Chignecto easier, much easier then the Fundy Foothpath? I got to be careful with my knees. 😊

    • @curtis.strange
      @curtis.strange  Рік тому +1

      Yes I'd say Chignecto is a better choice in that scenario because you have easier options to complete a full loop or not if you're suffering (to walk it takes a few hours or much more options for taxi/hitch hiking). I may be remembering with rose coloured glasses but Chignecto was mostly hard because of my terribly heavy/overpacked gear at the time. As long as you pack light you should be able to focus on the fun of it more.
