Wānaka: 3 More Glorious Hikes | New Zealand Ep. 4
IN THIS EPISODE: We finally made it to one of the most hyped locations, Wānaka, and it lived up to the reputation. We picked out 3 renowned but relatively easy tracks that would keep us busy during the day so we could relax by the water in the evenings (perfect). I managed to photograph some of my favourite images of the trip but more importantly felt the bliss that is ridge walking on a few trails.

The Best Day Hike in Fiordlands NP? | New Zealand Ep. 3
Переглядів 443 місяці тому
We weren't outfitted for overnight hikes on this trip so we sought out the highest rated day hike in Fiordlands National Park of New Zealand, a portion of the Kepler Track known as Luxmore Hut trail. It was a mild experience overall, but the nearby caves stood out as a particularly memorable part. Follow along for the ride! Hi, Curtis. Having done a taste of backpacking the Fundy Footpath a few days ago, I tremendously enjoyed this video. Beverly at the Long Beach Interpretive Center helped me out too! She radioed the maintenance folks and Jack, the manager, came and kindly gave me a ride to my car at P8. I had backpacked 8km from Big Salmon to Seeley Beach and tented there. Then, hiked up the Sealy Beach footpath to the road and hitched a ride to the Long Beach Center. I'm from Massachusetts and had spent several days in the Machiasport area of Maine, hiking with friends around the Schoodic Peninsula and Quoddy Head. I very much wanted to check out the Fundy Footpath, so continued on to St. John and St. Martin's and the Footpath. Hope to get back and do more of it one of these days. Meanwhile, I've been section-hiking the Appalachian Trail and have done about 570 mi so far.

      Sorry I'm way behind on notifications. It's very similar in terms of terrain, but quite a bit longer. The footpath felt a lot more isolated even though I actually crossed paths with more people there. My only caveat to recommending it is how boring it can be solo (not really grand vistas, etc). But It's a good test of skills for thru-hikes which are pretty rare in the Maritimes.

    Hmmm..i think for a starter and travel tripod It's better not to overspend on something you're going to be dragging around the world.. If you're going to be static and are going to be doing more video or something that's work related I would save the money and get the mefoto and use the money you would save getting the mefoto and get a high quality larger tripod that can take a beating if you're going out in the field or if you're going to be working constantly.. as far as I travel tripod I like mefoto for the price.. But some of the stuff on there is unnecessary. I'm a working videographer and photographer and I used a cheap dolica until just recently when I went out to do landscapes because I didn't want to get an expensive tripod salty in the water.. The dolica ended up lasting me 10 years lol Even with the salt

There’s not a lot of good info out there on this supposed “one of the top 50 trails in the world.” 8:20 in my experience there are people who use hiking poles and then there are people that don’t use them YET. The number of people I’ve seen converted over the years is in the 90% range. Just load up those pack and send them down a steep grade. Their mind figures it out fast. Haha

    I have been watching a few a your videos sine I am searching for a maybe 4 days hike. I would lime your opinion. Is Cape Chignecto easier, much easier then the Fundy Foothpath? I got to be careful with my knees. 😊

    • @curtis.strange
      @curtis.strange Рік тому

      Yes I'd say Chignecto is a better choice in that scenario because you have easier options to complete a full loop or not if you're suffering (to walk it takes a few hours or much more options for taxi/hitch hiking). I may be remembering with rose coloured glasses but Chignecto was mostly hard because of my terribly heavy/overpacked gear at the time. As long as you pack light you should be able to focus on the fun of it more.

    Loved this hike, it was my first hardish hike (ups and downs) and it prepared me for the Long Range Mountains in NFLD and then the Fundy Footpath later on. I really enjoyed the forest hike to Eatonville but if I ever do the hike again I would start at that end so my pack would be lighter for the harder stuff! lol I can remember when I did it there were two hikers coming in with a big bag of apples and a huge block of cheese. When we met them they were just sitting there eating and insisted we join them. They had heard that the hike was going to get a bit rougher from some other hikers so wanted to unload the heavy stuff! haha! Another hike I really enjoyed which was a bit of distance but quite easy was the Liberty Lake Loop at Keji National Park. Keji is one of my favourite places, it is up there with the Long Range Mountains and a place in Cape Breton called Pollet's Cove. In terms of general notes I'd say do whatever you can to cut down on packing non-essentials because heavy packs can bring down the mood, and opt for lighter weight trail running shoes that don't retain much water if possible. The plateau is very very wet so feet are sure to be damp by day 2, but if you can mitigate that impact you'll likely avoid blisters or other such unpleasantness! 5:02 Yay! This is one of the big things I have been wondering about. I want to take this trail when I visit Canada in a few weeks. thanks for going first and sharing the essentials. Looks like I will have to bring a bit more gear than expected. I am going to have the same transport problem (no car) but I half plan to rest up in Alma and figure it out from there.

      Glad it filled in some gaps for you! It is a bit unfortunate that there are not enough resources to facilitate hikers in the area but with some creative planning or sheer will you can make it work all the same.

      That's a good question haha. I started the first cut last weekend but was then distracted by good weather. I'll try to have it up this week by Sunday at the latest

      Thanks for watching, hope it helped give a little extra context! You'll be in for a treat especially when there is less bugs that time of year

      Glad ya got some value from it! It's certainly a niche trail so hopefully it gets more funding and accessibility as more people give it a go (although the exclusivity is a bit of the charm)

      Haha funny how things can ripple effect. I'd say that's a much safer location to store it
