  • In this follow-up to my series of videos "Backpacking the Fundy Footpath", I talk about planning the hike, how I prepared, and provide other background information for prospective hikers. I completed the hike in June 2023, and recorded this video a few weeks later.
The Fundy Footpath is a 64 km trail that follows the shoreline of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. The Footpath starts at Big Salmon River and winds its way along the rugged and difficult terrain of the coast of the Bay of Fundy, terminating at Headquarters in Fundy National Park.

Great videos. I'm planning on hiking the Fundy Footpath in late August and I found your videos very informative. Good work and お疲れ様でした。

You’re a lucky person! Beautiful country in both Hillsborough and Parrsboro.

This was a very interesting video! Did you encounter any wildlife while you were hiking?

Nothing unusual. Birds, deer, a few little snakes, and lots of moose poop and moose tracks.

How do you feel that tent would fare in extended rain?

    • @dawnywanders
      @dawnywanders  7 місяців тому

I have used the tent in rainy conditions over several days and it held up fine. I have reinforced it with waterproofing spray and I’m assuming that helps. However, I haven’t used the tent in really “stormy” weather, like high winds - just persistent and continuous rain and it kept me dry. For the cost, that tent is punching way above its weight class. I will say this: I am 5’3” and I just fit, along with my gear. If you are any taller, I don’t recommend it. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching.

The alltrails + map seems good but it doesn't show all the campsites. Can we sleep anywhere we want? The map you showed doesn't seem that good from what I understand.
We want to start at fundy national park visitor center and do the full 64 km. Its more than 21 km until the end of fundy national park and the real start of the fundy footpath trail. Is there a campsite close to where we enter the footpath trail after fundy national park are its still a long way? We saw there's campsites just at the end of the fundy national park before going on the footpath trail but I guess we need to pay for them?
    Thank you

The paper map I show in the video is the one that comes with the guide, and it's adequate for showing the useful features along the trail. It shows all the campsites. Most campsites are at a watercourse, which is both beautiful and convenient. I believe you must camp at a designated site. Truthfully, you wouldn't want to camp just anywhere. The campsites have been placed at (relatively) flat, clear areas. Everywhere else is very hilly with lots of trees - hard to set up camp.
I hiked the Footpath west-east. If you are hiking east-west, the first campsite outside of Fundy National Park is immediately outside the park, across a small river that is easily wade-able. If you want to check out that campsite, you can find it at the end of my "Day 4" video. Hiking in the park is "relatively" easy, and can be done in one day even though it's 21 km. I covered it in my "Day 5" video.
The only campsites you have to pay for are inside the park, and have to be booked in advance. The campsites along the rest of the Footpath are free and no need to book in advance.
      Happy hiking!

How much water do you typically drink per day? When you say water sources are plentiful, just wondering how plentiful for someone that drinks a gallon a day

I drink a lot of water, typically 2-4 litres (0.5 to 1 gallon) of water per day whether I’m hiking or not. The distance between water sources varies, but I would say I was crossing a drinkable watercourse about once per km. These were not all marked on the map, there were literally too many to mark, and I suspect some of them probably dry up during dry summers. However, I did this hike in June after a wet spring, and started the hike after a good rain. I only carried a 1-litre bottle to save weight, but you could easily carry an extra bottle or reservoir and then you would never have to be worried about running out. Also, the quality of water was excellent - clear with little sediment and it tasted great. Hope this helps!

@@dawnywandershi from nearby Maine! Would an August hike still have access to sufficient water sources? Great presentation by the way.

Water sources are marked on the official Fundy Footpath map that comes with the Hiker's Guide Book (which I strongly recommend you get in advance of your trip). I'm guessing these are all the watercourses that rarely dry up, if ever. They are plentiful, like every 2-5 km.
When I did the trail I encountered many watercourses that were not marked. I expect that many of these are unreliable, drying up during hot and dry periods like late summer when you are planning your hike. However, if I relied solely on the marked watercourses I definitely would not have run out of water, even carrying just one litre at a time.
