Ugh finally!! Thank you so much. I’ve been struggling with audio ever since I switched to DaVinci a year ago. Premiere had some easy little presets so I barely had to think about it. This is exactly what I’ve been searching for! 🎉
Great video! I would suggest making a more in-depth video on how to edit the audio of an entire short film, covering things like how to integrate music and dialogue, how loud each should be, and how to blend in sound effects.
My UA-cam algorithm suggested this episode to watch, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed it, as I self taught myself the same steps as you, apart form the teeny-tiny fine tuning bit of the Compressor and Gain. I will definitely be using those little tips. Cheers
Thank you very much for sharing Timothy! That already helped a loooot. Unfortunately I am editing a stage play, with actors whoi are pretty silent and others who are pretty loud; plus the ambience, music tracks inbetween and and and... I am afraid I won't be able to adjust the overall audio to a level that would sound realy professional. I used a Sennheiser Boom connected to a Zoom F3. I am a hobbyist only and do all of my work for free and charity. 🙂 An is it correct that I only see one audio track in Fairlight? Thank you! 🙂

Great video! Question: can you please recommend the best external plug-ins for DaVinci Resolve 18 for the best possible film dialogue? For some reason, I often end up with audio that is "close" but not quite there... maybe a little "metallic" or a little "boomy," or whatever. But rarely truly great. Any help is appreciated!

is there a way in DaVinci, even the paid version, for the waveforms to update after applying a compressor. It just makes it easier to see the adjustments made.
How to make the voice warmer like you hear from the radio and editing it according to the voice quality of individual? I have a professional mic and recorder, but don’t know how to edit it.
No, for the dialogue track, you never wanted stereo to begin with. The project is still in stereo though, so if you add music or any stereo effects they’ll come through as intended.
Thank you for the awesome content. I compressed my wav file already in audacity but when I went to find the compression button you mentioned in da Vinci 18 I don’t have the + sign next to the effects section. Please help, thank you!

Oh how frustrating. Under my A1 I have: Input, Track FX, Order and Audio 1. I don't have Effects, Dynamics, EQ etc. As I was writing this comment, I discovered that the list under A1 is scrollable, and hides under the Audio 1 label. My computer is set up for old man eyes -- magnification 125%. I turned off the screen magnification, and found the effects option I need. Hope this helps someone.
Is there a reason why you use the vocal channel plug in instead of the compressor in the 'Dynamics' section? I'm asking only because I often use that one to take advantage of the automatic audio ducking. Is there a difference between the two? I know that the Dynamics section doesn't have a High Pass. But, I suppose I can use the Vocal Channel plug in for that.
For simplicity and speed of workflow. The multiband compressor has a lot of power, but the single band included with vocal channel offers a speedier workflow and achieves the results I'm looking for. No harm in using the multiband though!

In a scene in my short film one of three actor's mic wasn't on and we tried using her dialogue recorded in the mic of another closest actor but the sound quality is obviously compromised, can there be a way to fix it? I am so much troubled because of it, will be really obliged if you help me out with this one.
Hi there, Is there a way to replay a audio section from a video and make it sound like the original voice. I just want to replace a single word of the dialog but pretend that the voice is coming from the original audio?
Yes, this is possible. Let's say I have background noise on the word "today". I'd find a point in the audio where I say "today" and there's no background noise, or I'd record a new version, then I would place that onto a new track and align it so it happens at the same time as the noisy version. Then when you've got the timing right, drag and drop it onto your first track to replace the noisy word. I hope that helps.
@@drtimv That I can do. What I am trying to achieve though is to mimic the voice tonality. As the voice on the video is not mine. I wonder if they are some sound effects that could make you sound more like the original audio clip!
@@_kaverna you can adjust your pitch and your formant using a plugin like Melodyne and that can get you pretty close. You could also construct a word from the original by slicing out the consonant and vowel combinations you need and then stringing them together with cross fades in between.

Nah, you can skip it if it’s already mono unless you’re only hearing out of one channel.

For the iPhone, do it for all footage. For the FZ72, you can skip the first step but still normalize, compress, and high pass.
Is this method also good for music or only for dialogues?
For music you’d want a more subtle approach as this would squeeze out the dynamic contrast too much.
