I rewatch this every time I make a video. It gives such an easy to follow work flow. I definitely don't have a great microphone, but these tips help to make the most of what I am working with.
Jamie this was so useful thanks, made a huge difference for me as I'm learning to better my sound. Just upgraded my mic and recorder but of course as we all know you need to get things right in post to really make it sound BEST for your individual voice.
this is the most helpful video about this on youtube. I recorded with a lavalier mic and the audio was tinny. I watched so many others but your video is the only one that helped make my vocals clearer. thanks!!
Thank you so much for this! I know NOTHING about sound engineering. This is easy to follow and just do at the end of each video to make sure the VO is as good as I can get it.
excellent short and concise tutorial. Helps a lot when you are familiar with the tools of compression etc and you need to apply them in DaVinci ... as a way to jump start
This was exactly what I was looking for. I am switching over from Premiere but couldn't get the audio to sound as good in Resolve - until now! Thank you :)
Did not know about the pan tool in fairlight. One other lil trick is that at the end on the main out you can do a1-2 Db boost at around 4k mid to sharp Q (depending on the voice)to add energy. Subtle but your brain notices
this was insanely helpful! forwarding this video to anyone from now on who needs help. thank you very much. you saved me so much trouble with being worried about hissing noises with "s" in my voice
Jamie that was awesome. Just what I have been looking for. Sound is so important and it's something I realise I've got to get happening big time. Thank heaps mate, perfect.
me too. lol. I can't remember it all. the only thing i skip is the EQ. watched so many videos on it but i can't get the point where the audio sounds bad. I think one needs an "ear" for for it. but the rest, yeah. I added the noise reduction sometimes too, because the place where I record have hard walls so it sound quite harsh at times
Quality audio makes a HUGE difference in your videos and this will take it to the next level! And always remember to get the best audio first, because there's a saying in the music production world, "you can't polish a turd!" :D WATCH PART 2 HERE ua-cam.com/video/fjQSTxFYki8/v-deo.html
Hi Jamie, appreciate your support but can you help me with something I really want to do in Davinci Resolve 16 ? Basically, I want to get rid rid of the voices from the audio track of a video ( but keep the rest of the audio intact )and then replace them (the voices) with my own voice recording. How can I accomplish that ? Could you make one of your next videos about this ? Thanks a lot ! PS :Oh yeah, I want my voice recording to sound awesome as well so that may imply making 2 tutorials.
When you drag the video into davinci, the audio track should be there underneath it so just delete it and fill in the rest with your voice and layer it with a quieter background noise of whatever the shot has in it. (city streets sound fx, coffee shop, mall noise etc, whatever the case may be) and then use the technique that I'm posting a video about today with it :D
Dude, you made this so simple and understandable. Now I'm waiting for part 2. Really it's hard to find anyone who understands dialogue mixing. It's kind of arcane. I've worked as an editor since your parents were children and we mixed on magnetic film. Mixing wasn't done by editors universally until about 15 years ago. There was always a separate budget for audio. As many years as I sat next to mixers and watched and listened, I didn't have to actually know how to do it. Why I'm still working in my old age is a long story, and it wasn't my idea. Thanks .
Hey thanks! The workflow in Davinci isn't the best right now or else I would have done a few things differently but this was the closest workflow I could get compared to Ableton...
A nice starter for the basics, without having to know all the ins and outs. Audio isn't my strong point. I have 2 questions though: - Do you have to do this each time you start a new project? Or is there a way to save the set-up of this audio track, to be ready for other projects, so you don't have to go through this each and every time? - What is a good way to get a soft "male" voice to be a higher pitched "female" voice, without sounding like a chipmunk or robot? I've used the pitch plugin, but I've noticed that you can't really go beyond 1 semitone without it sounding fake. Around 60 to 70 cents seems to be the most, but still not to satisfying. I've also used the EQ the lower the bass frequencies. Cheers
Fantastic video! Small recommendation, at the end of the video, have a comparison between the edited and the non-edited audio so the viewers can hear the difference themselves.
Thanks Jamie! Audio is so key 🔑 especially when repurposing your video content. Question: The last step, is there away to have the audio stay stereo? I ask because of the new iPhone 11Pro & Max with the stereo sound/recording. Thanks again for sharing your skills 👍.
Hey thank you for the kind words! Yes audio is definitely key and makes videos SO much better. I only suggested using the mono feature if your audio comes in on the left or right channels. When you record the signal usually comes in on only one channel. You could try and duplicate the channel twice and pan it left and right to make it wider. Davinci still has limitations in some situations but Ive always had the core of my vocals be mono as it will sound good on any platform and usually any mix, (and usually sound better when mixing with songs because music usually has a wide stereo mix.)
Awesome. And of course overall loudness and the mix of everything you put in your video is totally up to you so try experimenting and seeing what mix sounds best to you.

so I have to apply all the effects to the whole audio track? is there an option or a paste attribute where I put these properties on specific clips like in premiere pro?
I dont use premiere so I dont know. But as of right now you have to individually add the effects
1. copy the clip
2. press rightclick on the clip you want to paste the fx to
3. press paste atributes
You can apply them to specific clips, but if it’s your voiceover track or something, you generally want the same effects across the entire track for consistency and whatnot
