A lot of what Joris is saying here takes some experience/skill to do effectively. I don't fully agree with some of the decisions here but they're pretty good. If you don't understand how to do everything as shown, a good idea is to send your raw video to an audio pro with experience in Fairlight, and then have them make you a preset, and then look at what they did and learn that way.
Also, Joris said he records his audio to a Zoom H5, but doesn't say how he syncs it with the video. If you're close enough to your camera, be sure the camera is recording audio as well with its onboard mics. When you import both the video (with onboard audio) and the audio from the H5, you can highlight both in the media pool and right click and choose SYNC AUDIO BASED ON WAVEFORM and it will sync your good H5 audio with your crappy camera audio and replace it. After that, you don't have to drag both the audio and video clips to the timeline -- you only need to drag the video file, since the new audio has replaced the crappy audio.
    Hope this helps!

    • @nicholasrock197

You would want to look at gain staging. You could also use a compressor to get your clips louder without clipping.

    • @AndreSjoberg

The DeEsser removes/dampens the narrow frequencies around the area where the sharp S'es usually live and "flattens" everything - Then, upping a broader frequency spectrum/area for clarity is fine since the peaks causing the S'ing has been lowered. It's kind of like the use of the compressor to limit peaks, and then using the makeup gain to increase the overall level. It kind of helps to think of the EQ as a "volume dial for specific frequencies" - Lowering the volume around specific areas removes troublesome frequencies so it sound good, and then using a vocal enhancer is just a more "specific" EQ-variation to increase the volume of the whole audio spectrum where the voice lives. This is very simplified though - also, in theory, all of these adjustments *could* be done using only the EQ, or several EQ's in a row, first cutting/lowering troublesome frequencies (kind of like doing color adjustments removing and flattening things out a bit, leveling the whole picture out) and then boosting the ones you want to put some focus on, and finally boosting the whole image) - With audio you remove the troublesome frequencies, you then boost stuff (like in the vocal frequencies or higher to introduce some air) and then, once balanced properly, you can increase the volume of the whole track/frequency spectrum for a louder sound all over if needed.

Boosting the level to +20dB in the EQ is not going to help you find frequencies that sound bad. Anything will sound nasty when you boost it that much. Try to keep it around +9dB

Normalise is not effecting sometimes in my projects. It does most of the time, but time it does not. Any reason for this?

    • @drinkinslim
      @drinkinslim 8 місяців тому

If your audio already has peaks at or close to the top (0dB) then Normalise won't do anything, because there's nothing to do. Instead, you'd need to use raise the volume slider, or use a compressor or a limiter to raise the volume. (A limiter can also help stop the audio from going over 0dB and distorting.)

First things first. Those foam audio panels are useless for sound treatment on their own.
Id advise placing bass traps in the corners of your room and placing an acoustic panel on all four walls.
These can be made cheaply with 100 x. 25 softwood framing. Rockwool and a covering material for the front and back.
You could also place one above your recording position.
Doing this will negate any room acoustics and give you a datum to eq from.
Also dont fall into the trap of boosting the bass and treble while crushing the mids when Equalising. Different 🎤 s respond differently. Treat each as a single case scenario.

    Before the video:
    I *AM* a sound engineer (perhaps an intermediate one, but still) so ~i m p r e s s m e~
    After the video:
TLDR; Solid video; lower quality audio can only go so far, don't let that stop you; the video does its job, could be better in terms of showing pitfalls; I have this weird problem with presenting three items when I should present two; Compression is your best friend, EQ can also be; final opinion at the bottom.
So, I recognize a couple of things in relation to my reservations about this video, and none of them *reaaally* affect the main goal of this video, which really is to just showcase the Audio section of DaVinci's Fairlight. That being said:
    1) Wildly jealous of the amount of money this guy has thrown at his audio gear. Like, eventually I will need to get an H5 for professional purposes, and so that skews my bias just a bit 😂.
But fully recognize that audio editing is a lot like cooking: quality of ingredients indicates the spectrum of potential of how the dish can turn out, no matter how you cook it.
An A5 Waygu steak can always be ground up, processed, and turned into a $5 smash burger really easily.
It is painfully hard to turn a $5 steak to be as juicy or enjoyabled as an A5 Waygu steak, and arguably impossible in the kitchen.
Likewise, it is much easier to record audio with a good mic cleanly and turn it into trash. It is nearly impossible to clean up the sound of a door slamming in the middle of someone's dialogue in a theater, especially when the microphone is from your smartphone.
That being said, and much like Joris pointed out, don't wait to buy expensive equipment, record!! But recognize the limitations of the quality with what you're using, and try to limit extra sound to give yourself that advantage to editing it. And also recognize that, at the end of the day, $5 meat will not taste like a cow who has been fed olives all its life like a prince being fed grapes in ancient Rome.
    2) I fully recognize that this is built to be a ~10 minute video to showcase and give a basic tutorial to how to work to clean up sound via Fairlight, and I personally found what I needed.
That being said, if you're gonna be like "don't do this cause it will sound weird", please showcase why that would sound weird.
There's a kind of concerning problem in video/audio editing community where we just kind of feed people these 'presets' and don't really show them how they should be adjusted according to this situation.
I know that there's not much of a reason for the average video editor to necessarily fully understanding things like "db Headroom", "The Compressor vs. Limiter Decision", or a lot of the basic concepts of Sound Design.
But, I also know that if I were to see this some 5 years ago when I understood Sound Design very little, I would be banging my head against the wall trying to make my things sound good using these in-built features (given that, to the DaVinci Resolve team's credit, their UI here is pretty damn visually comprehensive all things considered).
So, taking that quick second to be able to show that would be pretty neat, a kind of bare minimum to give people a taste of what they're looking to avoid. 👍
    3) ... honestly couldn't think of anything else, I just really like making my points in groups of three.
But I guess in terms of unsolicited advice from a guy who has been dealing with this for the past 3-ish years, my highest suggestion is keep it simple and don't break your head with... arguably, half of this stuff.
If you're realllly diving deep into trying to make your videos sound professional and *don't* have to money to throw at some undergrad to work this kind of thing, then following throughout all of this video is pretty great and spend time to mess around with and learn each one of these things.
But if you're like me and don't have the time nor particularly care so long as the video doesn't sound like a reporter during monsoon season, here's the three audio-editing things you should consider (beyond making sure things sound just loud enough), arguably not in the order I present them in:
    a) [ 5:17 ] Compression is your best friend, and understanding it will probably be all you need to do in a lot of situations to make your audio manageable and decent.
This tends to be basically the only thing I touch a lot of the time, cause it's often the only thing that I have to care about in an audio.
And to Joris' credit, he did a pretty solid job explaining it, given that it's one of those things that just confuse anyone who hasn't eaten, slept with, and breathed it for a good amount of time.
    Why should YOU care, though?
Well, people have a tendency to not be at the exact distance away from a microphone at all times, or are not extremely precise with the way they talk, so simply making the audio louder doesn't help bridge the gap between the really quiet parts and the really loud parts.
So compression says "Hey, wait a minute, what if we simply just make *only* the louder parts quieter, so that we can raise all of the sound together without blasting our ears?".
Pretty easy to control the sound when that 'threshold' between the loudest and quietest parts is brought together.
    b) [ 3:43 ] EQ can also be your friend, but it's often a rabbit hole of overdoing something.
Unless there's an ungodly sound or sound quality that you can guess it's coming from a specific region of the sound spectrum that is consistent throughout the entire clip, going in and touching Band 2 through Band 5 doesn't make much sense for clean audio.
What you should consider is Band 1 and Band 6! They are traditionally known as "High Pass Filter" and "Low Pass Filter" respectively, and they are often used to cut extra sound material that isn't necessary above and below your sound.
A good way to figure out where each one should be is playing the sound continuously, and slowly bring in one of them to the center and stop when the sound starts to change in quality... and then do the same to the other one- you get it, yeaah.
    c) ... again, we've come to the point where I am forced to admit I have this problem with me trying to make three points when I only need to make two.
But, as a last point [10:21] , be weary of presets when it comes to audio and video editing; no two video/audio projects are exactly the same, much like how no two of the exact same food dish made in the kitchen will be exactly the same.
But also, if you record a video with the same mic, same person, same environment, and for the most part same style of video, saving what you did last time with a preset will cut down on time next time with having to adjust everything fully.
In other words, consider a preset more like a jumping off point into what actually needs to be done rather than a decision set in stone.
If you've read this far, thank you for reading probably the longest rant I've written on UA-cam.
When I have the chance, I will probably turn this into a full video, since Audio Design is what I've been falling in love with in the past couple of years, and sharing that love and wisdom, even if it's just in digestible doses.
As for my final opinion of this video, it definitely uncovers a lot regarding this industry, while at the same time fulfilling it's job, so... 7/10, good shit Joris.
