    Yue’s wig was awful and katara bevoming a self taught master without learning anything from paku is just wild to me ????? Like okay if she spends 20 years teaching herself why not but she cannot become a master so fast without a teacher 😭
    Also i hate they didnt explore the themes of talent (aang learning waterbending fast so later on he struggles with the other elements) vs practice (katara is a prodigy but most of her ability comes from dedication)

      To be fair it did seem like katara learned water healing or at least went to healing practices. So she did learn better water bending, just not fighting.
      Still, I wish they would have shown paku teaching her or one of the water boys teach her some moves in secret, that would have been cool/a good change.
      I get why aang didn't learn water bending:
      1.) probably cause of budget/not sure if a second season
      2.) so they could show more air moves/abilities (I did like seeing aang being able to fly without his kite, that was a really cool new addition)

    Tbh I’m still kinda annoyed that in the first episode they made it seem like Aang went out for a stroll one night and just happened to get caught in a rainstorm, like it wasn’t his intent to run away with Appa.
    He didn’t leave a note or anything like in the og series, and I feel like it got rid of a lot of his character development/flaws and the guilt he felt later on because he chose to leave after learning he was the avatar, but they made it seem like it wasn’t his fault at all. 🤷

      I dont really have an issue with character changes when it comes to pairing them with different people in different spaces, but the characterizing decisions they chose for Bumi in regard to him being a more bitter unhealthy person didn’t sit right with me. If theh respected the aspect that Bumi isn’t supposed to be learning from Aang and is supposed to be teaching him something then that aspect would have been fine for me, but instead they decided to change the characterization in that he is emotionally unwell and somewhat out of his mind in not knowing when to finish the challenges. He came across as borderline suicidal which was wack to me.

    Aang, not only doesnt bend a single droplet of water (which is NONSENSE, since this is the BOOK OF WATER), but he actually straight up, doesn't do anything. At All. The entire show. He does like.. maybe 3 things? He.. (doesnt "run away"), he just goes out for some air. He.. helps the blue spirit/zuko which helped him escape. And he.. goes to Roku's temple to speak with Roku.. who tells him of nothing of importance, while yelling at him and being goofy and angry at him. But outside of that..? He doesn't do anything. The finale, he lets the OCEAN SPIRIT solve the problem??? Just like he let Kyoshi do it before??? What in the world. Aang DOESNT DO ANYTHING, in the first season of a show that has his name. What the heck. The animated show, Aang is all about DOING. He DOES EVERYTHING. He goes places just to have fun. He beats firebenders when necessary. He learns bending when necessary. He makes choices. He makes decisions. He follows through. He shows up and does more than people expect. In this version.... he... doesn't do a single thing. Uhhhh, what? I feel your pain I was wondering all of the same things. I keep hearing people defend this show by saying that the animated show was perfect (which it is) so if they tried to make a 1 to 1 live action version that if anything was missing we would be up in arms. That logic isn't sound because guess what we're critiquing the crap out of this show because it's not staying true to the animation. The reason why we wanted a live action version of the show is because the show was so good and we just wanted to see bending done in live action. We wanted all the same stories compress down but not changed. It's really sad because as much as I like the original show I don't think I can finish this show. And they should have stayed true to the main source and they should have made more than eight episodes. I would say at least 15 or so episodes should have been made.

    I could not believe how they did Bumi. It broke my heart. I completely understand that this show is supposed to be darker, Bumi is supposed to be jaded by war, and not everything needs to be 1-to-1 with the animated show. However, he's supposed to be one of Aang's friends, and an elder who would be *theoretically* wiser. He just seemed so needlessly cruel to Aang for "abandoning everyone". Not to mention that in the live action Aang didn't even run away, he was just trying to clear his head when he got caught in the storm. He was turning back to the temple when he got lost! It just made me sad that not one person had an ounce of sympathy for Aang, a 12 year old CHILD waking up to find the world at war with his entire race destroyed. • @KingOfMadCows
    @KingOfMadCows 4 місяці тому +130

    I think a big problem is that making the show more realistic creates inconsistencies and logical problems the animated show didn't have to deal with.
    A good example is the fire bending. They're doing more to show how deadly fire bending can be by having people being killed by it. But then at the same time, they still can't make the fire that deadly and most of the time it just knocks people down. And that inconsistency is harder to accept when you have real people, they want it to be deadly but most of the time it's pretty cartoony. It's something that is easier to get away with in animation but way more noticeable in live action.
    Same thing with the war. The world has been at war for longer than most people are alive, generations of people grew up only knowing war. In a cartoon, they don't have to show too much of the harsh realities of the war. But it's harder to accept that in live action. And they're stuck in this place where they try to show more but not too much and it doesn't make sense and feels off.

      $120m ranks atla as one of netflix's most expensive shows and it barely had a 7.3/10.
      If budget and time wasn't an issue this show would've easily been better. That is why arcane is so good. they had endless budget and time. They paid for it themselves instead of netflix. I always said that showing the genocide would just be an expensive waste of time and I was right. The firebenders suck. It takes 4-6 comet enhanced firebenders to take out one air nomad, the most passive group in the whole Avatar universe. This genocide should be cake so why is it so difficult. Also why is the comet so small. Blink and you’ll miss it I’m telling you. This should be the most powerful firebending we will ever see until the finale but I can’t tell the difference. Zuko has a difficult time defeating Sokka, on Kyoshi the firebenders are not making any serious damage. Katara a novice waterbenders takes a couple soldiers out, Aang makes quick work of the Fire Sages. Like Zuko is at his closest to beating Aang in Omashu when he wasn’t firebending. YuYu Hakusho live action that was made in december has better ratings. (and that show was rushed). Aang doesn't learn water bending, half the side characters rushed in, dialogue was over the place, and writing made it seem like people watching were stupid when in reality we've all seen this show numerous times. S2 ATLA will 100% be more rushed and tighter budget...if this is what they made with a longer chain...imagine how bad s2 will be.

      nah i think the problem is often people shut their brain off to try and enjoy the relaxation of television when in reality ive often found that an active participation will always increase viewing pleasure. But, as a result of this, once the binge hype of it settles and people start to "wise up" and notice the flaws, things like the internal logic having contradictions every 5 minutes, (see Aang flying with no glider) it will start to lose its positive reviews. Especially when they adapt later seasons with what they've already ruined. And people are already (thankfully) inclined to not appreciate the show as we are FINALLY getting away from the idea that live action is better and that the original show still hold up to the point where we need sequels not re-adaptation!
      tldr: after people see past the very thin veneer, they will see its problems. Reviews will continue to get worse. Thankfully.

    The only good points of the show was the visuals, and maybe some of the additional scenes like the invasion of fire nation at the beginning. The writing was NOT very good, especially the into the dark episode, they did bumi really dirty. Iroh is NOT AT ALL the Iroh we all love , and the build up to sokkas both relationships were very unrealistic, worst of all no Katang at all, no water bending from ang at all, no Comet WARNING from the previous avatars at all, and the finale was bs to be honest. Seriously I’m not angry of the changes, but they could be better , spired away was the best episode by far , as for the acting,for me ,iroh was the worst choice,katara had no emotions ,aang wasn’t really believable ,zuko and sokka were thes best of all of them,i liked avatar kuruk backstory and the plot of 41 division ,overall 5/10 for me .

    Sokka did take a hit in character losing his misogyny, but they didn't by any means butcher him. I would have appreciated less time dedicated to a second romance, and repeated doubts about his lack of warrior vibes.
    Characters were not given enough time to develop for their "rise to the occasion" moments to have the desired impact (except Zuko). That was the greatest loss of this series.

Katara wasn't as good and they didn't really do anything unique with her, Sokka was solid, no problems. Aang was not as carefree and fun but that makes sense. I thought the pacing was good for squishing 20 episodes down to 8 episodes, they did not need a Great Divide episode, they did not need a whole episode about Bumi, who remembers the fortune teller anyways, I was fine with how much stuff they put into the Omashu epsiodes because we did not need whole episodes on those either. MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD (nothing specific, just general things)
    ~~~
    I, too, began watching this show not with high hopes. I didn't watch any of the teasers besides the main trailer (only to know what I was getting myself into). And while I have some critiques about the show, I will say its like an 8/10 for me. obviously improvements can be made and I hope they do so in season 2. I REALLY liked the castings, set and costume designs, and music and overall the DIVERSITY in the show. When you watch the episodes you'll know what I mean, but I loved how each and every region has diversity. Especially when they go to Omashu, I loved seeing the south east asian representation (and cabbage guy lol). I loved the main cast's acting and how they're ALL giving it their all. Especially the bond that is shown between Sokka and Katara, Zuko being a fire brat edgy teen, and Azula's need to be number one. some criticisms I had was I wished they made Zuko's scar bigger and nastier, like a real burn, disfiguring his face (also no eyebrow because realistically he wouldn't have one). I wish Aang would be more playful rather then being serious all the time ( there were some moments ) I also though Aang's actor was a little stiff when saying his lines, so it took a lot longer to get used. But I promise it gets better as the story progresses. I don't want to spoil too much, this is just my thoughts.
    For this adaptation, I wasn’t expecting nor wanting a 1-to-1 replica. I think it *was* possible to condense some story arcs (or remove them entirely; The Great Divide is one that comes to mind), in order to make the season tighter and more “dramatized”. I wouldn’t have minded adding in new context or emphasizing things from the original. My main issues were the script, cringe dialogue, and minor changes that didn’t need changing.
    Kyoshi didn’t need to foreshadow the siege of the north - while it “adds urgency” to Aang’s journey, it just makes the finale less surprising. In the original, the “expiration date” is Sozin’s comet coming at summer’s end. This is what fuels Aang to “hurry up” and learn the elements, adding emphasis that they need to get to the north asap.
    Roku portrayed as some goofball? Huh? Why was he cracking jokes? He’s supposed to be a wise person who almost feels a sense of responsibility for the war.
    Kyoshi’s portrayal is more like the meme-version of her - they depicted her as like this bloodlust merciless killer, which she wasn’t.
    Aang not even bothering to use waterbending was so odd. Part of Aang and Katara’s relationship in season 1 was them learning it together.
    Speaking of the Gaang, the script in the first episode did not properly establish *why* these characters were together. It felt more like they were obligated to because “Aang is the avatar”, which is a terrible reason. In the original they band together because they genuinely like each other, because Aang gave Katara hope, and so she could learn waterbending. There’s just no chemistry between them.
    Tbf, Sokka’s sexism story arc only goes until episode 4 in the original. After Kyoshi island that plot is basically resolved. An important lesson, but I wasn’t bothered they removed this.
    The exposition also really hindered the live action. Sooo much telling and not enough showing.
    I feel we could’ve had a really great adaptation, and while this one isn’t bad, it’s visually appealing I give it that, it just doesn’t capture the right story and removes some important story elements that shouldn’t have been removed.
    They nerfed the character development and so many meaningful scenes were cut. Wan Shi Tong being in the spirit world makes me worry that they'll cut the library. Also they totally missed the point of Koh the Face Stealer, it was about getting info and having emotional control, instead they just had Aang make an exchange with a little totem of Koh's mother for Katara and Sokka, just reduced Hei Bai to a cameo. Aang gained Hei Bai's trust who helped him later. It almost seems like the showrunners were afraid of getting cancelled before a 2nd season so they crammed in as many characters as possible.
Seeing people say “oh he has no flaws now” pisses me off, he clearly uses his humor as an escape from not feeling good enough, and that flashback in episode 5 man, it hurt.     Lets just gloss over the fact that Sokka never went ice dodging with his dad in the cartoon. So him being a "disappointment" for that reason is dumb. The cartoon handles the ice dodging with Bato really well. I assume they'll try to weave that scene back in here somehow. But, Sokka's motivations in this seem out of place. His most painful memory is disappointing his dad in a retcon?
    The notebook is lame af! Sokka would have a map. Relying on some Nathan Drake notebook is rough. Having Aang steal is out of character. But I guess they needed him to steal that instead of Katara stealing the scroll?
    Also, actively avoiding bending after having resolved that he will have to learn all the bending styles is just bad writing and even worse characterization.
I mean some of best things in this show for me were (most of) bending itself and locations/cities - really cool to look at. So why not make show about one of past avatars, or even time period when Aang is adult. That way you have soo much more freedom to craft your own story, create new unique characters (espec. with past avatars option) and just keeping locations, world and bending as it is. Plus you can avoid constant comparison with original cartoon which is such high bar to even match and we would get completely new story on top of that.
    As a huge fan of the original show since it was showen on TV for the first time - and also own all the Atla comics - I personally hated the live action show, they changed so many personalities of the characters (and ruined some of them completely like e.g. Bumi, Yue, Azula, ect), they thrown in stuff from season 2 and 3...so what are they going to show in season 2 (if they make one)....Aang can fly now without his glieder and also doesn't really want to bend - the Avatar State is shown as something evil....the only two things I liked was the backstory with the comet - like that they showed what happened (usually they tell/talk more than they show), and the costumes. I'm happy to cleanse myself from this shit show by watching the original again.
    I'm more excited to watch the second season of Percy Jackson - because that show had a lot of potential and I hope they make the necessary changes so the show will be great. Also there is no other show that I could watch instead - and I'm really not a book reader.
    To the agni kai between Ozai and Zuko: 1. overall Ozai seemed less cruel in the LA version - which is a bad thing - he is supposed to be THE most evil man. 2. In the original Zuko was banished BECAUSE he didn't fight back. The agni kai was the punishment for him speaking up in the war meeting - but the banishment was the punishment for Zuko not fighting back in the Agni Kai.
    8:42 yo! one of my high school friends played a freedom fighter, and i can confirm theyre a great choice for the role, they really loved the animated show and tried super hard to emulate the original character.
    Should’ve stayed animated and maybe tell a continued story that we see in the comics, I believe that could’ve been huge for Netflix
    Aang not waterbending at all had both me and my partner (who never saw the original series) upset. Also keeping the scene where Katara gives Aang the acorn and tells him the forest will grow back but saying look here Hai bei just to have koh steal that plot thread made me so upset.
    i think that they wanted to capture the more blue tones of the show and kinda make it like something where people can watch it without knowing about atla animated version.
    Honestly the live action was pretty decent, and i actually enjoyed it depsite some of the major changes. some of them were actually kinda fun to witness. (The whole thing with the 41st division was suchhh a good addition) but the ones that i didnt like were making Bumi a petty old man, changing why they needed to go to the north(it makes more sense to go there to learn waterbending instead of "preventing a great tragedy" because the ultimate goal is to stop the war, and the second option makes it seem more like theyre just doing damage control isntead of facing the problem at its source) and the early arrival of ozai and azula. The time spent on azula couldve been used to show the gaangs relationship, and the whole thing that made ozai menacing and mysterious was that he was a faceless character for the first season. its also what put more emphasis on zuko and zhao being the relevant "bad guys"
    I don't need to watch it to know I won't like it. I've never been a fan of the recent obsession of making live actions remakes of already great animated works.
    It's as if animation is considered as the lesser medium that's in need of live action 🙄 Honestly the money and efforts that went behind this series could've been used to make an Avatar Kyoshi animated series for example, or finish the upcoming animated movie...
    We’re getting both season 2&3 so let’s see how they try to salvage the mess they created. I’m worried for how they will do Toph. Character development needs work. Especially with Katara. 😅😂
    I'm just waiting for you to do a POV of the animated show from Katara's perspective. They should've hired you to play Katara, or Azula. Your Azula POV was perfect!!
    I never cared for Kataang but, the lack of it bothered me. I felt that the original show waited too long to confirm Katara's feelings, and it never really felt like a "romantic throughline," more like something the writers came back to at random when they weren't dealing with the actual plot. That said, the lack of ANY "crush" interactions felt ... troubling to me. I'm one of those weirdos that adores the Mai/Zuko relationship (especially post-series), and if they go the Zutara route, I'll be unbelievably disappointed. I think Kataang here is a lesson in not appreciating what you have until it's gone. (And, if they're gonna kill Maiko, they better at least make Tyzula canon.)
    This is my favorite review I’ve seen so far and I’ve been watching them all day:) I also thought a lot of the show was freaking sick. I still need to see a review of the show from somebody who hasn’t seen The original cartoon (does this person exist?) because I think that all the exposition everyone is complaining about was well done! I had a smile on my face every time they talked about some component of their world, and maybe because it’s been a while since I’ve seen the show, to me it felt like it did a great job of reminding me of what happened without showing me shot for show what happened. It’s very familiar yet new and fresh and I’m so excited for book two and three. Idec that the Netflix show will almost definitely have a time jump to account for the age of the actors so the shows might vier away from each other because they are forced too. However I really feel like everything was so good I’m gonna watch it again very soon haha. I do have one gripe and it’s kind of the way actor for ang (I know he’s also the youngest on cast so let’s not pick on the kid) but he does react to things in only one way in especially the first three episodes. Spoiler I guess, but anybody will tell him some peice of information and ang will just scream it back to them and say “That’s why…. Is doing that!?” And the other person goes “mmmhmm” and it happens three or four times . Not a huge deal. And they stop doing it later in the season so maybe the actors is learning the ropes. My favorite actor was the guy who plays Zuko (sorry I don’t know their names yet ) his character arc matches the cartoon in season one almost exactly and was so much fun I loved every scene he was in.
