I’ll never understand how Wish cost $200 million to make when Across the Spider-Verse, a movie that looks at least 10x as good, only cost $100 million. There has to be some massive accounting fraud going on at Disney right now.

The downfall of Disney is nothing new, people have been talking about this for several years (from what I've seen on UA-cam). The company just doesn't take risks anymore, which is half of what made their company successful in the first place. They were innovators, willing to try new things and make people impressed with a format of storytelling they've never seen before. If they were still doing that, Wish or whichever movie would be pushing boundaries for kids' movies: what animation style can be used, what's too scary, what's too complex, all things explored in the Puss in Boots sequel, for example. Instead, they're recycling their more recent content since it worked out well for them, giving us half-reheated leftovers, and expecting people to eat it up. And the worst part is, because they're so huge, people will eat it up. Wish will be an example of this.

I'm actually stoked that Disney is in another flop era, because whenever they're in a flop era, the movies that follow after said flop era tend to be really, REALLY good. Case and point, when Disney released The Black Cauldron back in the 80s and almost went bankrupt because of it, they released The Little Mermaid, which was followed by beauty and the Beast, which was followed by Aladdin, which was followed by The Lion King. And again, in the 2000s, Disney was struggling in the animation department, but then they released Tangled, which was followed by Wreck it Ralph, which was followed by Frozen, which was followed by Big hero 6, Zootopia and Moana. Also, animation historians have a clear and concise line for when the revival era ended (2010-2021)

Personally I think Disney started its flop era with Frozen 2. It was extremely rushed (they even said it in the documentary) and was clearly made to remake that "we're not like other Disney films" Frozen was. It tried WAY too hard to be different while trying to pander at the same time. Movies don't have to be revolutionary, they have to be FUN. Yes, it's amazing when they can reach us as adults. But that comes with passion. SHOW me WHY this is a classic Disney. Don't recycle. Reinvent. Let the story be itself, make characters because they're interesting and need their story told. I think Barbieheimer is a very good example of original concepts that was a big enough reason for people to go to the cinema. Disney need to begin branching out into more original and interesting concepts like these films.
I also think marketing is a big issue, being able to make it a relevant internet discussion is also important. Once again Barbieheimer is a good example of this with people dressing up in pink to go see Barbie. This can even be seen with the second minion movie with the gentleminions. Theres so many new factors and ideas that there just not considering.

    • @savannahinparis

Neither of those movies are original. Oppenheimer is based off the historical account of making the first nuclear bomb. It’s literally a biopic and Barbie is based of a children’s toy that Mattel created in the 1950s that has had dozens of films and tv adaptations since its release

The Barbie movie was such a big hit because it was seen as exciting and it was actually a good movie, people no longer want to see franchises or formulaic films in my perspective as the majority of tropes have been worn out as the movie business becomes more crowded.
However the point still stands tat they are wildly more successful because they were less formulaic and broke the mold slightly even if they are not wholly original. Aswell as this if you think about the majority of films they will always be based on a concept or an idea, Barbie and oppenheimer were just more literal concepts but that does not stop them necessarily from being original, For example Toy Story is based on the concept of what would happen if Toys were alive. Gladiator is based upon the concept of the ancient greek gladiators. In my opinion it is all relevant. Thoughts?

Not only that, but they release 50+ movies and tv shows for some of their biggest brands (Star Wars and Marvel). You hit the crux of it. The simple fact is Disney has become risk-adverse. Instead of backing up every risky project with a safe project, they've decided to just play it safe with everything they put out. So, remakes, sequels, and formulas. For some reason, executives and bean counters don't associate projects doing well with financial success. I dunno, maybe they buy into their own profit-loss bullshit accounting that they use to screw people out of money. If they were truly smart and savvy, they'd notice which of their films did well commercially and critically--the ones that deviated from the norm of whatever franchise or genre they were in, typically--and push to do more along THOSE lines. Or, maybe Disney has just been so high on the hog for so long that they've forgotten what it felt like to have genuine competition. Maybe if Warners could get their shit straight they'd put Disney back in the fight and off cruise control.

I agree with every point you brought up! I wish that Disney took more risks with their films and tapped into the creativity they have on staff more. So often do you look at the concept art and early sketches and see a movie that is often times a lot more interesting conceptually(ie Frozen, Wish ect). It gets run through corporate, scrubbing it clean of any of that. I know Disney movies are family movies(mainly aimed at kids) but with their recent films I just feel that they are talking down and hand holding too much with them. Kids can absolutely handle more serious topics(ex: avatar the last airbender, spiderverse, puss in boots the last wish) if you dont spell it out so obvious to them. I think people are just fed up with 1) lack of good fleshed out villians 2) lack of risks taken.
For WISH it wouldve been amazing if they made it in 2D to pay homage to their earlier films and the craft that made this company thrive as long as it has. But oh well I guess🤷🏻. Not saying its a terrible movie but it feels like I'll forget this movie even came out within a year.

In the argument for the Disney live action retellings, I think Disney needs to do better to sell the “reimagining” part, because that’s what they started off as. I would say the best example of these are the movies that added and broadened the movie in a way that wasn’t necessary but it did improve it in a way! For example, the story arc they gave Eric in the live action little mermaid, he already was a fan favorite, but his backstory, and what they showed about him with his parents did a good job to connect with him more. I feel like Disney just needs to do a little bit better in selling the aspect of them being reimaginings, because that’s what the OG animated movies were; reimaginings of classic fairytales!

Disney World has gotten even worse than Disneyland. Last time I went they said they were only doing housekeeping every other day, but they never cleaned our room once in a 5 day stay. They did, however, have cast members barge into your room to “inspect” it every morning, sometimes as early as 7 am. So one morning while my husband was taking out our trash because no one ever cleaned the room, a male cast member let himself into our room while I was in the shower! It was terrifying! We never got so much as an apology for this terrible service and even though I grew up a hard core Disney lover, I can not convince my husband to ever visit the parks or stay in the resorts again. I’m just glad that we didn’t have young children that these cast members were waking up by banging on our door every morning from 7-8 am every day.

I think if anything those plot points just prove that you can't really trust rotten tomatos to see if a movie is good or not... at least not without reading actual reviews, not ones making general statements about how "fun" or "woke" it is.
also the lazy part has to do with the writing and the directing, when people call a movie lazy, they're not calling the people who actually build the sets and do the cgi and stuff lazy.

It’s also a complete bore or nuisance for the adult parents who have to sit and watch films with their kids in the first place. Like why wouldn’t you want to make it enjoyable to adults too just because the target is kids? I definitely remember as a kid actively preferring movies and shows that were actually good on some level over mindless drivel that’s meant to distract you rather than immerse you.

Ho boy. You can like what you like I won't take that from you, if you enjoyed them that's great! But... I have some things to say about both those movies.
Raya was Not Good in my opinion and a lot of others, there's a bunch of issues, one of the most pressing being that it was touted as being a movie that represented SEA people when in reality it didn't.
There's a ton of SEA people who hated the movie and pointed out all the issues representation wise with it, there's a series of videos from a UA-camr. I can't remember her name, but she did a series on Mulan pointing out cultural things, what they did wrong and right, but she had SEA people on to talk about their issues with it.
Then there's the horrible messaging. The message of the movie is about trust but they botched it. They made it seem like you should just trust everyone or whatever but that is genuinely dangerous to do.
Now Wish. I haven't watched that one but Saberspark did a review and that told me all I needed to hear and what I heard wasn't good, apparently the magic system they put in place has a lot of plot holes, the villain is uninteresting and bland.
Not to mention his evilness doesn't have a reason and his actions don't make sense and in general the movie was like printed cardboard.
Just a stale movie filled with nothing but cliches and tropes.
