- I finally test the overlooked skip setting on the IDC 4 brakes found on the SLX DC and Curado DC! Can it turn a novice into a pro?

Is this rated for saltwater?

That’s how I cast rolling when I’m casting under trees I don’t know if it’s right or not I’ve also been fishing out of my new kayak a lot been crank bait fishing a lot I could not use Floracarbon for the longest every time I would cast it it would backlash I finally realized I’m in a boat I don’t have to make far cast Well what I learned was if the spool tension knob is not properly set you’re going to get a backlash Now I can cast Flora carbon almost as far as braid

Skipping lures in open water often attracts fish from great distances. Skipping creates a reaction strike from feeding or schooling fish. It imitates a fleeing bait fish very closely. Think of a dog seeing his favorite ball come bouncing by when in the mood to play. He will chase after it and catch the ball. Fish will do the same; it is not for just putting baits under overhanging bushes or under docks. The same action of skipping a flat rock is the same as skipping a lure. The difference is the rod tip is the end of your finger.
I use left handed reels so I can stop the lure very quickly after a skip or any cast in general. Also feels more natural to me since I'm used left hand spinning reels in my childhood.
I thought I was the only one who felt like that, I’m a righty naturally but I feel more confident reeling with my left

I'm pretty sure more will follow due to it growing in popularity.
As a French I never understood why a lot of people in the us tend to fish with right hand reel, since they throw from the right they have to switch hands to retrieve so you kinda loose the casting reel purpose.
I think marling bait uses right hand reel but he throws from the left hand so that make sense.
Do you guys have an explanation to that, it always made me curious.

Nice vid... by now you've probably practiced a lot more and gotten pretty good...may I offer just a couple suggestions that helped me when I first learned to skip. 1. use a one-handed roll-cast 2. once you release the bait on that roll cast and it hits water, keep the rod tip in a slow motion lift as you follow the skipping bait. This helps keep "lift" on the bait as it's skipping across the surface. Once I got these two things down, it came naturally. Thanx for sharing your experience!
When you skip you gotta have the bait lower then how you normally cast. Idk if that helps you a little but yeah it’s about angles and all that math stuff so it being lower will help with angles. Just like when you skip a rock you got to do it low higher won’t skip as good.
I'm impressed. I've never even managed a single good skip.
I love skipping and it's by far my most valued technique. I always wondered if a dc would help or inhibit a skip cast.

Also, yoy should consider doing a rolling skip cast. Makes a world of difference. You'll wanna release around the bottom half of your roll as you come back up
Gerald Swindle talks about using 20lb mono to help “push” the bait and not backlash as much. Worth a try to see if it helps.
Shimano reccomends you to minimise side to side play with the spool for optimal working of the DC braking.

I'm not good skipping but get better skips when the first impact on the water is closer to my target. It gives it a better, more parallel angle.

But skipping is OBVIOUSLY a skill a lot of people forget because it takes some practice and learning. My Curado DC and SLX DC have made me a legit skipper out of the gate, the reels help tremendously in my opinion
well in my case I never learned because where I fish theres no need to skip under anything, its all usually open water from the bank
Pleaseeee make a casting distance video with diawa's costal sv tws with like a half ounce weight thing that u usually use. I really want to see it because I'm either going to get the tatula elite or the costal sv. I want the costal one but if the elite casts way longer then I'll have to get that one. I just love the look of the costal sv.
I dont have a coastal SV. but all you have to do is see the letters SV and know its not going to be the best at distance casting

DC braking system is not recommended for lure weighing less than 10 grams

Maybe setting a camera on a tripod would be a better angle for the viewers rather than trying to see around your arm.

I purchased one an I'm sooo ready an to see tour full out review on it... I use mine for panfish on a shimano sensilite rod... Alot of products I purchased based off tour opinion and I haven't been disappointed with any shimano products. I have 6 different shimano baitcasters and 5 rods... Might want to roll cast instead of straight cast. It helps with creating a better angle with the lure against the surface of the water.

I might do a video on the IDC5 skipping. I would use the flourocarbon line mode and 4 on the dial. This is the max braking setting for the IDC 5
I have a metanium dc it skipped just like a dream too. Never backlashes, but setting is a little bit different.
Your skipping skill is pretty tight! Mine is a mess.
You will figure it out, remember, there are dumber people than you who learned how to skip lol

Great video, I may look into getting that reel! What's the price point on that? Also what reel would you recommend for pitching? I can't seem to get any consistent distance on my pitching however I never spent more then a $100 on a bait caster also.
its $190. But try this first with your current baitcaster. Set Your spool tension to just minimize the side to side play. Then turn your brakes up all the way and try to pitch that way. Then slowly start backing off your brakes until your line starts to overrun on the pitch. Turn the brakes up 1 or 2 settings and that should be the optimal pitching setup for your reel.

I must be doing something wrong I havnt got the skip cast going yet on a baitcaster. I have the SLX DC and have tried. No issues using a spin reel.
remember what I said, its about the lure hitting the water going as parallel as possible and doing that consistently. Tighten the spool tension knob like I did on the 2nd set of 10 casts and practice.

So I fish Daiwa baitcasters, preferably what would be the best Daiwa to skip baits with. I've seen the videos you had with the magforce 3D is that the best reel to go with from Daiwa as far as lure control?
probably the Tatula SV. It has the air brake rotor and the biggest inductor out of all the Daiwa reels.

The key is the have a roll cast to me it looks like your just side arming the cast. Not an expert at all just kind of saying how I skip.

I was in Bass Pro Shops ( I live in New England it was the NH one ) and I was talking to the salesman about if they had a Metanium DC in stock that I could look at ( unfortunately they did not).
He did mention that Shimano is coming out with an all new Antares DC.

No, the Scorpion DC has no skip mode but you can use the flourocarbon line mode with the dial on 4
