  • If you're looking to purchase the Shimano SLX DC, please consider these 5 do's and don'ts.
    #1:
    Do make sure you're using all of the tools on the reel to maximize your casting efficiency, and preventing unnecessary frustration
    DO NOT use incorrect settings, or not use all of the tools and expect positive results. You're setting yourself up to fail.
    #2
    Do make sure you're spooling the reel to capacity (or as near as possible) so the braking system works as intended.
    DO NOT try and get away with having less line that needed.. less line = fast spool speeds = more backlashes.
    #3
    Do test and find out what works best for you!
    DO NOT believe that you're confined to one setting.. once you're comfortable start tweaking and get the most of the reel.
    #4
    DO condition your line. whether this is through casting, line conditioner, or some other method.. this will save you major headaches.
    DO NO assume that you can just spool the reel, and go make legendary casts.. line memory will get you, I promise ;)
    #5
    DO research, test, and trial and error.. Read reviews, talk to friends, go to the official website..
    DO NOT take my word for this exclusively.. While I have experience, you researching, and putting in the time to learn the reel through whatever means you have available, will ultimately provide you the information you need to be successful with this equipment.

    Well, this video took off a bit, so let me clear the air on a few things..
    1. I am not, and don't claim to be an expert - I wanted to share feedback from an "average joe's" perspective.
    2. I am NOT suggesting the manual is wrong - The entire basis for my video is to encourage you to find what works for you..
    3. I respect the opinion of everyone who watches, and comments.. Text is hard to follow, so if you think I'm being argumentative, I assure you I'm not.
    Overall I love this reel, and will eventually own another (maybe a curado instead).
    Thanks for all the support, and engagement, you're all great!

    Yup I definitely made a couple of these mistakes. I kept the braking system to 4, with braid. Which worked ok, but didn't give me full casting distance. Dialed it down to 2 after watching a similar video, and it's perfect. Second mistake I made was allowing the spool to lessen without filling it. Great video, very informative

There are some budget minded options available to get you by (you know this) so depending on what you want to spend... 180 for a reel or 180 for a combo. I been using mine with 30lb braid if I leave the spool lose like how shimano says I can whip out a lure and only have to put my thumb on the spool only before the lure hits the water... now if you adjust the tension knob like how you do for a normal bait casting reel I can throw out the lure and depending how you adjust the knob you don't even need to thumb the spool! It's a great reel, Nice video.

    Very good video. I have the same reel of course as well as the scorpion mgl and the regular slx which I an using tomorrow for the first time. On the dc versions the spool tension is set to where the spool just stops sliding back and forth. That way the computer chip stays charged up so the dc system can do its job. The way we are often told to set up a baitcaster is to let the lure drop down slowly until the spool does not backlash. That is the absolute wrong way to set any baitcaster. Set spool until until it just stops side to side play and then set brake to max high. Start casting and see how far down you can loosen brakes. And believe me I have backlashed my dc many times until I learned. Maintaining a proper casting motion helps a lot also. Confined casting area will lead to a crappy unsmooth cast which may backlash. Once you learn to use it casting is a joy. Everybody will backlash at some point. Pros included. Theirs are never on video lol. The slx dc will do anything the more expensive dc reels will do for the normal freshwater and inshore saltwater uses. Once again a great video and I rambled on a bit. Oops lol

    • @OkieOutdoorAdventures
      @OkieOutdoorAdventures  4 роки тому

      No rambling at all, I think you made very good points and this is extremely helpful. The understanding that the DC is very much unlike traditional bait casters was the hardest thing for me to get over. You also make a great point about backlashing.. we see rarely see the pros do it and I think that creates a bit of misconception, so I appreciate that reminder. I’m interested in the scorpion and have heard great things about the Curado too.

    I got this baitcaster and I am trying to learn to use it, so I was practicing last weekend and one thing I noticed is that if I try to start my cast with the power of the throw immediately I get a birds-nest, but if I hold off until the rod is past the halfway point of the cast and I put the put into the flick of the rod tip, no birds-nest and I get max distance. It is a very subtle adjustment, but I think these baitcasters are all about subtle adjustments. I hope this helps someone.

  • @sidroberts8436

    Thanks for the video it’s very informative. I’m new to baitcasting reels. A few years ago I cut the tendon in my right thumb and have very limited motion in it. I tried a baitcaster and even tried all the methods of perfecting a “no thumb” cast to no avail I still ended up with horrendous backlashes! I’m hoping this reel will solve this condition. I do have one more question. I have never used line conditioner before, a fishing buddy of mine said an alternative is silicone lubricant, is that a viable alternative?

    • @OkieOutdoorAdventures
      @OkieOutdoorAdventures  4 роки тому

      I haven’t used the silicone before but I do use line conditioner and it works well. I’m sure it’s a good alternative if you can find it relatively cheap. Also, I did some testing for a friend of mine where I was able to dial this down to throw without backlash. Please let me know if you need any help with anything and I’ll do what I can to assist

    That reel is sweet looking and I have plenty of experience to handle it but I own seven baitcaster combos with an eighth one on the way lol. My wife is awesome and let's me spend as I see fit as long as it isn't outrageously out of our price point. I know if I bought a ninth one at almost two hundred dollars she'd have something to say or possibly stop talking to me. Maybe if I sell a few she'd be more understanding since it would be like getting it for free with money left over but that's also conditional I couldn't sell her rods lmao.

      As far as ratio, it kind of depends. Sounds like you’re looking for something that can do a bit of everything 6,3.1/7,2:1. I don’t have any experience fishing with it around or in salt water so I’ll defer to others who may have that experience. The shortest rod I have is 6’10 and it handles the reel with ease. • @OkieOutdoorAdventures
      @OkieOutdoorAdventures  4 роки тому

      The short answer is, it depends. The manual says to set it so there is little play, but I’ve found that I do have to make VERY minor adjustments depending on the weight of my lure/bait and the wind. The guys who live and die by the manual will tell you to set it and forget it, but I’ve had great success doing what I do. I’d encourage you to find what works best for you. I’m certainly not an expert but it works.

      The tension knob adjust the side to side play in the spool. Tie on a bait and watch how quickly it drops. Adjusting the tension can slow that but you don’t want it too tight or you sacrifice distance. Rely on the brakes to do their job. They are responsible for spool speed.

      Not a stupid question at all. You have a couple options. You can trash it and re-spool new line which it what I normally do. You could tie into it, but having the knot is a weak spot, or you can save it and use it for leader line. Generally I just re-spool though and trash the extra.

I tried it on all the dial settings and still get a birds nest even on #4. The only way I don't is if a crank the tension knob to the point where the lure barely drops. But then the cast sucks. Unfortunately for them to work properly they don’t cast far. If you utilize all the backlash features it does not cast very far. But if you set it up like other bait casters they do cast well but then you’re paying a premium for features you don’t need because your still fine tuning and feeling with your thumb while making cast to prevent line flare or backlash. They also cast a heck of a lot farther when they’re not filled 95% full. 🙂

    The spool tension knob on a DC reel shouldn't be used like a traditional tension knob. The spool with no tension will move side to side. Only tension the spool to the point where it no longer moves along axial axis. Then yes of course use your brake accordingly or user preference. That's how you get the best out of your DC reel.

    This may be more of a comment than a question, but it seems kind of odd that a mid to a little bit higher end reel would force you to have a full spool of line. I have two older Abu's and have never experienced backlash bc of the amount of line you have on them. I'm not even sure I understand why that would be an issue. Line is line. You learn how to cast with what you have to work with. If you're fishing and get a nest and have to cut your line, you shouldn't have to pull 80% of the line off and respool the whole reel. That sounds awful. Hope you have lots of extra line.

    • @OkieOutdoorAdventures
      @OkieOutdoorAdventures  3 роки тому

      You know, I come from that same school of thought. The only thing I can think of is less line could impact the overall spool speed which maybe stresses the brake or something. I’m with you though, there is 100% no time I’ll cut off 80% of a spool, ever.
