I've just discovered Skylines recently after being disappointed by Transport Fever 2 after 20 Minutes of playing (while in heavy demand of a similar game). I've had so much fun and bought all DLCs in one week. Like every game, there are some famous UA-camrs who play their beloved games... and mostly I am not a fan of these channels, because of too much overacting or silly baits. I think that was the best sponsor segment I've ever seen
Here is a technique I use; at 7:30 you talked about the lane arrows on the roundabout. Naturally you would set lane 1 as the coming-off lane only. What I do is set lane 1 and 2 for coming-off only, lane 3 (and 4) to forward only and then using the "Junction restrictions" tool set the lane switching to green. That way if the traffic wants to go from lane 3 (or 4), they can do it there. Doing this helps make the traffic use all the lanes (and the whole roundabout) instead of just creeping around lane 1.
I think that you forgot one thing to improve a roundabout: the dedicated right turn slip lanes. If you wanna go right, you don't have to pass through the junction. And in this case you don't need to create a bridge.
Also that, with traffic manager I think, he can lower the speed between the exit and the entrance of the roundabout to give more time to the cars who have to enter.

I like to do dumbbell roundabouts at highway entrances and exits when possible.
I also put in a couple of city parks with nearby parking lots in my large ones. The gates are outside the roundabouts, there's a path leading over to the park and down into it, and the middle has typical city park stuff. It works. Kind of.

Another advantage of Traffic Manager is to adjust the speed limits down to allow more time (and thus more vehicles) to enter the roundabout. If using highway roads to connect your roundabout, adjust the speed to somewhere between the incoming road and the roundabout as highway speeds are much faster than regular city roads

oh man.. love this video... i keep going back to cities skylines, every now and again, and i can never remember the short cut keys for setting up roundabouts. i have to go back and find a video where you say it, over and over again... you'd think i'd just write it down by now... really liking the in depth videos!

Loved the ad promotion portion of the video, very creative. Sometimes I skip past ads/promotions but I really enjoyed yours.
I built a city with industry on one side and all delivery happens through the city (about 30 blocks of 8). I kept them 4 lanes with tramlines, but the main intersections I reworked to roundabouts with the main road going over with ramps down to the roundabout. And the roundabout links up with the crossing boulevard. The road going over is the one that already had the most traffic. Works fine, and I got to keep the trams.
I could probably do better by adding a highway ramp for the delivery vans to actually use the highway.
Biffa! Love the vids...got an idea for a build challenge. Using the unlimited money mod and the unlock all mod, build a complete city without unpausing. Meaning once the game is launched, you never let the time run - it stays paused until the entire city is built - then you get to unpause it only once and must let it run for 1 hour without touching it anymore.
Best episode yet, out of many good ones. Learned a lot. Now, how about doing a deep dive on the Move-it mod?

check out Klyte's Write the Signs (beta) on the workshop or the Addresses and Names mod, and then every street and/or district and/or transit line will automatically have a tea name or a tea prefix ;)

I found out that creating a roundabout with 2 times more lanes than the connected roads make for the best bandwidth. For example, for 6 lane two-way roads you pick 6-lane highway roundabout with 3 dedicated turning lanes and 3 other for going forward (Circling around). Works really well even if you're short of available space.
I'm starting to think Biffa needs professional help to deal with his roundabout addiction...
Biffa, maybe you should speak to the developers to add yield signs to the Vanilla game, with no stop streets at a roundabout traffic jams on the roundabout, but with stop signs traffic just gets backed up everywhere leading to the roundabout
If ur roundabout gets super busy, u could also add and underpass (from ur main road) if slip-lanes aren’t enough. Move it and tmpe will help u loads with that.
No disrespect meant to others posting online but Biffa truly is the best out there. It will be an extremely sad day when Biffa retires. I wait for new content like a small child on Christmas Day!

That trainabout is more like what they call a turbine interchange in road terms. One example is the M3/M25 junction outside London
The main difference is that a turbine is freeflow, whereas, in a roundabout, traffic still may have to halt to let other traffic pass
As I said before, for each driving side there is a "worst case turn". A turn that on a normal interscetion, will interfere with and be interfered by the maximum number lanes. 3:00 As this is a "drive right" road, the left turn is the issue.
Roundabouts and Highways both have the aim to avoid that turn. The turn is converted into a 3/4 circle on the roudnabout/intersection.
The main issue with roundabouts, is that the vanilla tools to set them up are garbage. The Y-connection with Lane Mathematics might be your best bet.
There are two things they can not fix, however:
- with really extreme traffic, one incomming side may never/to rarely get a opening to drive on.
- with really long ones, the worst case scenario may be both common and a really long way for a lot of the traffic. People planning to do the "worst case turn" can be an issue here.
I pretty much always skip over "a word from our sponsor" in videos... but not this one! So good to see that Hugo is protecting himself while he sends his information over the world wide web!

@ 7 minutes -- vanilla roundabouts can be made to flow quicker if you use highway roads. Traffic naturally gives way and the speed limits are set higher. Don't remember where I saw that.

3:53 my first solution would be slip lanes, my second would be timed traffic lights, and with that amount of volume, I would skip the roundabout as a solution and go with flyovers as a last resort.
1. general sliplanes are dangerous for cycling and walking; eat up pedestrian space; and just another place to que and act like a zipper blocking people going straight. The only time they benefit anything is when someone is driving 9pm at night.
2. follow dutch short phase system.
3. auto volume is not a constant of the universe. It can be changed in so many manners.
4. most flyovers should only be for PT, walking, and cycling. Way more compact, and can put in many more places benefiting communities with more direct routes to amenities.
Great video. Is the roundabout featured on the intro a hand built one .. or from a downloaded asset? I love the compact nature and the symmetry of that one.
One extra tip I didn't hear you mention, was to use TM:PE to set speed limits, especially if you use highway roads.

Hi Biffa, is there somewhere where all your roundabouts and intersections are? (Exported to be imported) if your super lazy like me and love some of your roundabout designs and just want to be able to import them to slap them down in a single click without elaborate building?
I struggled long with a stack interchange, and found out even in vanilla you can just burry the main roads underground (2 levels down)...
And then you only see that iron-cross shape from up. With proper lane counting (2 main + 1 side into 3 main)... it runs smoothly.
Note for vanilla if you want your round about to have like the modded ones do and have just the outer lane to exit, have a 1 lane 1 way road going off. then that going into a normal roan. It makes it work just like it would with mods with just the outer lane for turning off.
In my 100k city I have exactly 4 roundabouts: 2 regular + 1 highway crossing + 1 highway terminus (which could be called a drop-about because of it's shape). Only 2 of them are really busy because of the industry. Otherwise the traffic is flying. So yeah...

I have to wonder if splitting the exit and entrance slip roads to a roundabout helps because they two types of traffic are going through seperate junction boxes, and it becomes easier for the traffic simulation to handle.
The last time that I upgraded the version of TMPE that I was using, all my junctions were changed back to the default settings and I had to go back and fix every junction. Is that still the same or has that been addressed?

I think if you don't have the traffic manager mod, highways default to yielding to merging traffic so it's better to use regular roads for roundabouts and never use them on freeways.

Hey Biffa, great videos. You inspired me to play. Unfortunately I bought on Origin because I didn't realize life would have been easier with steam. Which is sad, because I'd love to share my spiral about with you to see what you think. I'm sure it's not original. I use them with hwy junctions. In short, one hwy bypasses under, second over. In between is the circle. Traffic enters from outside the circle and exits from within or vise versa. I rather enjoy it. On busy intersections it looks like it's flushing traffic. A picture would be so much better.... Anyways, enjoy your videos and cheers (to tea).

Whenever I drive around a rotary/round about/traffic circle (whatever you want to call it) there’s about a 50/50 chance that the person who’s entering the rotary/round about/traffic circle is going to yield or not. I’ve been very close multiple times to hitting another car that doesn’t yield.. very irritating because they look right at me when I honk at them. Then someone else nearly rear ends me because they also didn’t yield.

My issue is when a city put in to small a roundabout. I used to drive trucks and really make tough to maneuver. My length was 65 feet.

Hi guys, I’ve got a city I’ve been working on nearing 400k population, the car traffic is a beautiful 81% but the train traffic is absolutely horrific, and I think it’s causing supply chain issues around the city. I don’t know if biffs would fix it due to the size, it’s huge.
