As a Swindonian, I loved this! However, the middle roundabout is created by the connecting roads of the mini roundabouts, so you didn't need to create the larger inner one. Also, IRL, the 'road' that doesn't join to a roundabout is a left turn only. It's an exit for the football club car park, I never thought it was actually used, but it seems it is!
GPS: "Take the third exit on the first roundabout to take the 2nd exit on the second roundabout. exit on your 4th right to your 3rd roundabout where you will take the second turn"

the only rule the magic roundabout has is "don't crash into each other" so it's mostly a free for all

The issue is, you made a central roundabout surrounded by 5 smaller ones and connected them on the outside.
When the magic roundabout is 5 smaller roundabouts connected via the inside & outside.
Another issue is that the outer roundabouts are going the opposite direction from how he built them. That should have been obvious from the map that he used as his reference.
He had it right on like two of them which is funny lol, the ones that were working well
Also traffic is mostly going in the wrong direction. Swindon roundabout is driven in left hand traffic, but this game is right hand traffic. This roundabout thingy is a mixture of them.

Yup. The magic roundabout is not a central roundabout surrounded by 5 roundabouts.. . It is 5 roundabouts that are sufficiently close that they just happen to create a reverse-direction rotator in the centre. Starting with the construction at the centre “roundabout” cannot achieve this

If I were driving and saw a magic roundabout, I'd do whatever I could to avoid it altogether.
That’s probably why it flows so well. All the traffic is going a different route instead.
Seee interestingly as a Brit I was shocked at first looking at it, then I realised, it's just regular roundabouts, point yourself in the right direction you'll be fine
At first I was like, "nope, this isn't going to work" but when you fixed it up some more and made it more pleasing to the eyes, it was really nice to watch.

Now that we've seen the 1:1 replica, would you be interested in setting up a Biffa-fied version with better lane mathematics and fewer lane swaps? This could be a really neat feature as part of a city center once this one is big enough to have a proper downtown. Or maybe part of a heavy industry zone to see just how much traffic it can handle.

Also, this is for a 5 way intersection. It's possible for a magic roundabout to be at least 3 intersections since 2 is just an oval about.

I was so relieved when you finally fixed the small connecting roads between the small roundabouts and the inner roundabout.
Don't think I've ever heard Biffa laugh so much during a video. And I still in shock that this monstrosity of a intersection works so well.
You have forgotten that the outer circle has also more lanes at the smaller roundabouts

1 lane goes left down drove road and the other joins the roundabout at the drove road junction without entering the queens drive roundabout
hed be better off looking at the google earth arial and streetview photos to understand it, that schemeatic he has used isnt very clear

This is what I was coming to post, as well. A three-lane road going into a one-lane mini-about is going to create traffic jams. I watched to the very end and I didn't see him fix that. The rest of the design I'm ambivalent on, but that really needed to be fixed.
This is both the most glorious and the most horrifying thing I've ever seen.

To people whose brains have melted: it's essentially a large roundabout with each junction replaced by a small roundabout that connect to a reverse roundabout in the centre.
There's a few in Britain, some with and some without the inner roundabout.
The inner roundabout's function allows you to skip the exits you don't need which is great for a large roundabout with lots of exits.
Another way to build it would have been to build the outer and inner roundabouts then connect the two with single 1way lanes at each junction before using moveit.
i suppose if you wanted to build this in a city with right side driving youd just have to mirror it
Me: You need to do a left handed driving map, reverse all the roads in the roundabout or swich the side of every single incoming road or it won't work.

Yeah he messed that up so bad 😂😂 In UK the big one in the middle is like a RHD and the small ones are LHD where in the video he should have put the big one as LHD and the small ones as normal RHD 😂

Very impressive biffa, as somebody from Swindon I can say well done. The unnamed road isn't actually a road, just a drop curb for emergency vehicles to use when theres a football game on. I will say that in real life rush hour, it's a pain in the neck as it's very busy.
There's one in Hemel Hempstead too. That one has six nodes
The Hemel one is simpler. It's just six mini roundabouts joined in a circle. Not so difficult to drive, but still requires advance knowledge of the lanes if you don't want to get in a muddle.
It works better than you might think.

We have simple 1 and 2 lane roundabouts where I live in the northwest U.S. I've always been under the impression that you guys over there are like experts at driving those crazy roundabouts! Do they always flow nice? Or does 1 or 2 idiots fudge it up once in a while?

Brilliant traffic planning you mean. Biffa built this all wrong, in reality it's a fantastic piece of road designs - it performs brilliantly. I can't imagine any other type of intersection here that wouldn't perform worse.

Some of the issues you're having stem from you using Right-hand traffic on your map instead of British Left-hand. If you'd inverted all the directions of the roundabouts it would work a lot better, as traffic wouldn't be fighting itself

I grew up in Hemel Hempstead, and spent a lot of time going around the magic roundabout. The thing that people need to keep in their minds is that it's not actually 6 roundabouts around one huge roundabout. It's actually six mini roundabouts one after the other, just in a circular layout. You can go around the centre in either direction.
Honestly, Swindon gets all the attention, but I can promise you, Swindons magic roundabout is a total non-event compared to Hemel........which also has a river (The Gade) running through the middle of it!! Hemels is also on a larger scale than Swindons, which would probably make it easier to replicate in-game. Two lanes clockwise, two lanes anti-clockwise, stay on the inside (close to the main centre) if you want to keep going around in whatever direction. Move to the outside one mini roundabout before, to get you in the correct lane to depart the whole infernal affair!
Biffa, on the magic roundabout the little roundabouts are part of the the larger one in the middle, the little connector roads shouldn't be there
biffa: very smart, can fix traffic problems in peoples cities, knows a lot about roundabouts
also biffa: builds a left-hand-drive roundabout in a right-hand-drive city, rather than flip the roundabouts direction or change the city settings, just makes one direction roads that manually cross each other
I think it'll perform a lot better if you swap the directions universally so it's natively configured for driving on the right.
Now for the ultimate brain fryer: make a magic roundabout out of magic roundabouts lol

@@ProGamingTime I think one of the reasons it was implemented was actually its relative cheapness. The tarmac and the central roundabout were already there before the magic roundabout came into existence (partially it is infilled canal, at a point where a canal bridge used to connect three of those roads, with the other two roads being originally the line of the actual canal itself). The first iteration of the magic roundabout merely reversed the direction of the central roundabout that was already there, and laid out the mini roundabouts using traffic cones, before they eventually stuck some white down for the mini roundabouts and did all the permanent lane markings etc.
As an ex bus driver in Swindon your version works really well, considering the limits of the roads you can use in the game THUMBS UP BIFFA extra tea for taking up the challenge

I learnt to drive in Swindon. You get taken around thus during lessons and, at least at the time of my test, you had a 1/3 chance of having this on your test. A good job recreating it here!

After watching this and studying the magic roundabout I feel like the best way to build it would be: 3 lane inner, 3 lane outer, add the fourth lane where needed, don't make a true 5 small roundabout just connect them with single lanes? I am really sad I stopped gaming, you make this game look such a blast, I'd love to play it. Always an enjoyable video when you mess or unmess a city

Biffa, instead of thinking about this as 7 separate roundabouts, it might be easier to see it as 2 bigger roundabouts connected by 1 way roads between them. The outermost roundabout would follow a conventional direction while the innermost goes in the opposite direction. The 5 ‘smaller’ roundabouts are then just a pair of 1 way roads connecting the inner with the outer in an arc.
It makes sense if you think about it as a road with lots of little roundabouts on it
Seems like to make it work better in the game you just need to make things a bit bigger. One of the main problems seems to be trucks are nearly bigger than the mini round about, and they block pretty much all the entrances and exits while on them. Bigger small round about, and maybe a bigger circle over all would probably fix a lot of the problems. For right hand drive roads you could also probably reverse all the circles directions and it might work better.
Hmm... someone's bound to make a 3, 4, 5 (this one), and maybe 6 way magic roundabout for the workshop now.

Agreed with the man who suggested to do the non-english version of the roundabout. That way you can just work with your normal roads without using weird configurations to fit the schematic you previously made. Looks cool!

Biffa, you made the magic roundabout far more complicated than it really is. Just put five 3-road mini roundabouts down in a circle - do that a long way apart if it makes it easier to see. Then connect the "external roads" to where-ever. Then connect the inner-most roads in a (right side of road driving) clockwise loop using one-way roads and connect the outermost roads in a counterclockwise loop again with one way roads. In Swindon, each "one way road" is three lanes. Then move the mini roundabouts so that they virtually touch each other. Job done. (Don't add any extra bypass roads, it will only mess the magic up.)

I live in Swindon, you did a really good job at remaking that crazy roundabout.
You build a magic roundabout for left-sided traffic and you use right-sided traffic. You need to change all the directions of the roundabouts
The biggest Problem with this Roundabout is that it's not connected probably. The smaller roundabouts on the outside shouldn't have a complete circle on it's own. The inner most street should be removed because the big roundabout in the middle takes that place.
So you probably have to build it by hand and can't just build 5 small roundabouts around and then connect them up if you want the actual magic roundabout.
Could you have set you two roundabouts to start with (one inside the other), and then placed the 5 small roundabouts between them?
The actual central circle is just formed from the inner entry/exit of the mini-roundabouts with some short link road to join them
Driving around it, you constantly enter mini-roundabouts taking the first exit.

Roundabouts are few and far between over here in the States. Usually reserved for smaller areas/communities. I personally love them and wish they were more used. But this monstrosity, I'm avoiding that thing at all cost.

I knew this was going to go badly as soon as you made the innermost roundabout run anti-clockwise. That only works while driving on the left, if you are driving on the right, all roundabouts needed to go in the opposite direction. Changing the direction of all feeding roads rather than just changing the direction of the roundabouts was an, umm, interesting solution.
Someone should build a map were this thing fits between the differnt industrie types and the citizens and then biffa need to fix it again

I've been through the real magic roundabout and dear LORD it is an absolute nightmare. Very well done recreating it!

Also, I'm pretty sure your centre roundabout is all wrong. On the real thing it isn't continuous like that.
Exactly, the mini-roundabouts dominate, the contra-flow centre is more like entry/exit stub roads for each mini-roundabout.
With so many roads meeting at one point, a conventional large roundabout would need traffic lights and lane management as it simply wouldn't flow well as flows tend to cross in streams at speed, reducing effective road space to vehicles wishing to enter.
So basically, It's dual roundabout that goes opposite way. And some road link both together in roundabout fasion too. The benefits is, Traffic doesn't need to goes all the way around to turn right (for European left driving road). You could turn left along outside roundabout immediately. Or turn right with inside roundabout. And all the junction are on one simple rule of give way to any car inside roundabout. So no traffic light like good old roundabout would. And also no long trailing for turning right traffic.
Imagine doing driving lessons in Swindon, I don't envy them!

Just a thought to improve it. Make the outside ring 3 lanes on all 5 of your little round-abouts. Just the section for the putter ring. The outside lane makes the left out of the junction the center lane continues around the outside loop the inside lane makes the right onto the small round-abouts.
It's a normal roundabout with a reversed-direction roundabout in the middle of it. For left-side-traffic it's anticlockwise inside clockwise, and for right-side-traffic it's clockwise inside anticlockwise. In your left-side-driving image, you have a bypass to the left, and then you go into a roundabout from which you can turn around in the same direction you came, or get into the inner roundabout, from which you would get to one more outer mini-roundabout to get to the exit you want.
Also, the smaller roundabouts are actually connected to the bigger roundabout through a single node. Or an inner roundabout going one way, an outer roundabout going the other way, and smaller roundabouts made by having pairs of roads connected to the same two nodes, one node on the inner and one node on the outer roundabout.
Yours is not working as efficient as it could because you have two points of contact between the inner and outer roundabouts. Honestly, you could make a 4, 6 and a 8 mini-roundabouts magic-roundabout assets, and just slap them to fix the traffic in other people's cities. Too bad there is no way to save the specific Traffic Manager settings of the road into an asset (or at least wasn't last time I checked).
I think an easier sequence would be to bring all roads into a central point. Use the roundabout tool to make a massive roundabout. Convert that roundabout's road type to three lane each way and then use the roundabout tool to create the smallest possible three lane roundabouts on all of the nodes where the external roads join. Or more briefly, focus on the diagram 0:17 seconds in and let the lanes sort themselves out.

To everybody who always says this every time this roundabout is discussed, in the real world you don't get the overhead view that makes it look so complicated. Driving it on the ground you just treat each mini roundabout like you would treat any other mini roundabout and it's fine. It's certainly not a monstrosity - it's bloody brilliant. It's only the ignorant who make negative comments about it.

@@ajantsmith6139 It was and is. It's actually not all that confusing when driving on it, it just looks that way when you see the whole thing. It's actually a remarkable bit of civil engineering and traffic management.

In Swindon (UK, left-hand traffic), the inner roundabout goes counter-clockwise and the rest of them, including the outer ring, clockwise. For right-hand traffic just invert that.

I was thinking the same about switching to English roads. I recently made a diverging diamond interchange asset. It works with right-hand drive roads but I need an inverted 6 lane 3/3 road to make it look better. I tried to make a custom road and holy crow is that a new level of complexity! There are so many parameters, which honestly isn't the worst part, they are easy enough to look up. What's really challenging is positioning the decals like lane arrows. I could not wrap my head around the dimensions and gave up for now.

It is fun. You pick an approximate exit before going on, then just drive forwards while looking to the right. Everybody using it is pretty cautious.

Lovely idea, and interesting result, which is also a testament to Cities Skylines being as flexible as it is, but I do think there's several improvements that can be done:
- Have the correct lane orientation for all roundabouts, either have everything as in the UK, or nothing, but the combination is causing unnecessary complexity
- Minimum of 2 lanes eveywhere instead of bottlenecks at the outermost sections of the outermost roundabout, basically the outer roundabout should have easy ways to take the exits on the outer roundabout.
- Join the small roundabouts with the inner roundabout instead of having it in parallel.
I think then there'll be much less bottlenecks and much less queueing traffic as a result. Curious if you can pull it off, and would love to see the result. Perhaps you need to do some manual road management instead of the using the roundabout tool for the inner roundabout?
Instead of doing crossovers, you could have just reversed all the directions on the roundabouts.
It works really well in the game great job of getting it right. I drove on the one in Colchester regularly. Really strange driving around the central roundabout in the opposite direction but it works and is a shorter route to your destination. Great video I enjoyed it 👍
