    I just bought 5, 6" "stem to stern" Desert Roses I got from a vendor off of Etsy few weeks ago here in Lake Charles, LA, which is SUBtropcal and do get a few light freezes per winter, at which point I'll just slip them into a nearby heated room with poor light, but I can supplement them with if I intend of keeping the leaves by flooding them with overhead fluorescrnt ceiling light when we're forcast an overnight freeze. You have a great channel, BTW, good luck. I'm a "liker" and a subscriber too, BTW.

    After they bloom what do I do? Both have bloomed like crazy and I have 6 babies that came from surprise seed pods I’d never seen before but boy they grow slowly.
    Now my large plants are blooming prolifically like I’d never seen before which must be due to repotting into larger pots first time in many years. As they finish their display do I just leave them or cut back or ???

      It’s a matter of preference now. If you want to promote more stems then you can cut now while weather is still warm.

    Are the leaves supposed to be shiny? Mine look a bit velvety and lighter green. Not sure if I am giving it enough water in the summer. It gets pretty hot in Tucson.

      You might have a different variety. You will definitely be able to tell if it doesn’t get enough water as it will either lose it’s leaves or shrivel up a bit. In our summers here in Texas I water at least twice daily if in full sun.

      Never tried that one but based on the NPK looks like it could work. I would not use at the same time as any other feeding just in case..

    Hi, I’ve watched your video with your dad doing his grafting part 1. Thanks for that and great you’re working with your dad, sharing these knowledge. Much appreciated. Wanted to ask you guys, with the bits that he cuts off from (stock plant, I think) can you plant that little branch too? Also my pot is too small, I want to move to bigger pot. But can I graft on a new repot plant? Thanks

    • @growinggreenthumbs7497
      @growinggreenthumbs7497  2 роки тому

      Yes you can try to root the cutting as well. I would do that in the warmer months. Be careful not to over water as it rots easily. I would wait until your repotted plant is established and growing first before you try to graft on it. It just gives it more time and be more stable to provide the energy for the graft to be successful. Thanks for watching!

    My dessert rose has browning on the tips of the leaves, what could have caused this? Please advice. Thank u

    • @growinggreenthumbs7497
      @growinggreenthumbs7497  3 роки тому +1

      It could be moving them back into the sun too quickly. Also possibly overwatering. I’m making assumptions here but usually those two reason are most common.

    How do you protect your desert roses in winter, Robert? I'm in South Australia and it's actually the end of winter.

      Hi Mike, thanks for your question. I will be doing a video on this topic in the fall. But there are several things you can do. In assume you have them in pots and bring them indoors during this time. You can allow the plant to go into full dormancy mode by exposing it to 40-50 degree Fahrenheit temperatures. I would not go below that. Then you can place it in a dark dry area until spring. If you want to try and keep it growing, this will be more work but possible. You would need to keep temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and plenty of light. I have a south facing room with lots of light and I have a shelving unit. You can create a mini greenhouse and cover it. One idea is to use an aquarium water heater in a bucket of water to keep temperatures up in that mini greenhouse. You can also use some grow lights as well. My dad has a large greenhouse and has 2 wood burning fireplace. We get icy winters here and often times he wakes up in the middle of the night to had more wood to the fire. Again some work but worth the effort for him. Hope to get you a good video on this soon. Thanks for watching!

      @@growinggreenthumbs7497 Thank you for your reply. I do the same things you say. But desert roses grow larger every year and require more space. I'm asking this question because it looks like you have a lot of plants.

      I used it in my garden but not for Desert Rose. I didn’t feel it was necessary as I would use a balanced slow release fertilizer.

      Could be just the sunlight reflection? Also if it gets a bit more shade they tend to be darker shade too.

    • @growinggreenthumbs7497
      @growinggreenthumbs7497  2 роки тому +1

      Hi it would be best to have multiple plants and encourage lots of insects/ bees to help pollinate. You can also try hand pollination methods. There are lots of great UA-cam videos I. That as well. Best of luck!
