Thank you for posting this tutorial, I have 2 desert rose plants and I needed some of the information you shared with us. You explain in a very understandable way for all to understand. Desert Rose care for dummies. 🤣
Thx for the solid advice! And you can keep them growing in winter. I planted mine in October, 4 months later they're 30cm. Using a tent, 20-22C, 18hrs light, only like 80W per square meter.
Devin is Awesome! Thank you for your knowledge and helpfulness on the desert rose. Please continue to make videos. They really do help us all out.😊 Now I will look at your other tutorials for help when needed.
Hi Devin! Thank you for posting this tutorial! I have 3 desert rose plants and I needed to know how to care for them in the wintertime. Love your channel! ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Devin I’m new to this gardening world and although I have a few house plants mostly succulents I don’t know much about caring for them also I have been trying to grow avocado plants from seeds. I would had two plants in pots that I moved outside now that it’s not summer and this week I discovered both of them with leaves shriveled up the biggest was lacking water and the other possibly to much so I’m looking forward to learning more from channels like yours so I can enjoy gardening
Just found your tutorials today while researching my new desert rose. Thank you so much! Going to give the pretty little thing a new improved pot today! ❤️
Excellent! I grow a number of desert rose plants. This was a well-made tutorial. Love these plants!! I was blessed to grow up with these growing wild. Keep up your outstanding videos!!!
Thanks! Would really enjoy meeting you sometime. Yes... I grew up in Africa just south of the Sahara Desert. These plants thrive in what we call the "bush". Again Devin - well done! Enjoy all your videos.
Came across your videos today. I'm impressed. You are talking calmly and very clear. I have over a thousand seeds to plant in the next few days...Thanks - from South Africa
gREAT INFO. Thanks. I am using cinnamon and also sulfur dust. Been doing lots of pruning.. Wife hates the mutilation:) I use a hairdryer or electric fan overnight to dry out the DR. I learned this from cacti cuttings over the years. They are completely dry overnight.
I hate it too! I feel for your wife. Looks so brutal …but seeing this video I see it is important. I was actually searching for ways to weave or braid the long floppy ends together ..eek! So glad I found this video before making that mistake.
Thanks for all the info! I am a beginner desert rose lover.ha. I’m trying to read and hear all I can to produce more branches and flowers. You are so clear and knowledgeable! Looking forward to further info!
Devin, I have a huge Adenium and was looking for some tips on pruning/shaping it and found this video. I thought it was excellent. I don't know if you have had speech, or actor's training, but technically I think you are a good presenter! You enunciate clearly; neither speak too fast, nor too slow; you give very useful information that is well organized and understandable; and you have a natural likable relatable personality on camera. I like that you list your tools and links where to buy. AND I especially appreciate and LIKE that you didn't play some awful music through the whole video as some of these UA-camrs do! So thanks. P.S. I live in sub tropical zone and my large Adenium stays outside year round. I think I covered it one time with a an old sheet when we had a hard freeze warning. It was cool/dry season and it was in dormancy anyway, but I covered it.
You’re so lucky to be able to grow them in the landscape! Have you tried propagating them? I have a nice video showing how :) and thank you! For my ‘real’ job, I present plants on the tv channel QVC here in the states
@@plantvibrations Aha! I was going to say you should be on TV, but you already ARE! Yay! Was just considering trying to propagate, since I will have plenty of cuttings after pruning. Will def be watching more of your videos! And will look for you on QVC! Thanks for all the good info.
Great source of info, I’ve been obsessed with these plants for two years and grow my own from seeds. Have not tried cutting the tap roots yet, will next Spring!
Awesome video! Everything I had seen was to keep them dryer as they are like succulents. Mine are so leggy... This was a blessing. Thank you so much! Be blessed in the name of Jesus!🥰
Glad I found you! I just picked up 4 adeniums from a nursery and had NO idea what to do with them! I’ve watched some of your videos and have 3 dormant and 1 semi awake. I’m in Texas where we don’t have a lot of cold so hopefully I can get them back outside soon. Thank you again for the info!
Wonderful! Yes they are definitely best to start outside, they have a very difficult time acclimating if you start them indoors. Be very careful not to water them too or at all until they go out
Thanks a lot for your information. I am at the stage of repoting and I will prune it today. I will put it outdoors and hope to get some flowers. I will fertilize it and hope for the best! Thank you so much for your detailed Teaching. God Bless!
To keep feeder roots you should water in winter (once every 1 or 2 months), if you dont give rhem water those roots will die off. When summer starts, those dessicated roots will start to decompose and that will increase the chance of root rot. This is not meant as a criticism, but to explain part of why you don't want it to dry out completely :)
Personally I also believe it's detrimental to prune. You want as few branches as possible. The way to do that is by not pruning it. When you prune it, it will not grow a thicker caudex, it will focus its energy on growing new branches. All the weight on those long branches will also increase the thickness of the branch and this also has an effect on the caudex (like how bonsai growers have sacrificial branches). Pruning is what you do for shaping the branches, not for the caudex. In my experience, overfeeding, specifically overfeeding nitrogen, will cause more branch growth and less caudex growth. Experiment with this stuff yourself, get 20 seeds and treat half of them with no pruning and the other with pruning. In my own observations the plant least messed with tends to grow the biggest. But that is ofcourse only my experience/opinion :)
And fun fact. The reason you can defiolate without much issue. Is that the caudex itself is also capable of photosynthesis. The leaves are way better at it, but when it's dry in its native habitat the plant itself can still gather energy just by existing :D
Thank you for this educational video. I’ve had my dessert Rose plant for over 13 years. It basically hasn’t done much but gotten taller. I’ve never seen flowers 🌸 on it. I’ve pruned it once. I just threw it outside while watching the video because I’ve never put it outside before. I’m sure i over watered it for years. I want to prune some of its longer branches but I’m afraid to let it dry out. Maybe i can just prune it for now. Thanks again. I’m ready to stress this plant out 😅
Devin thank you for these Informations! I finally find a garden Center which can Provide me this great plant next year in April 😊 thank you so much for sharing this video! I love your channel and your treatment towards your plants! Greetings from austria 😇 🤗
I so wish I had watched this sooner. My desert rose had a caudex that was as big as my head. I made the mistake of watering it weekly in the winter. When I went to do the early prune, it was mush down to the core. A sad day but I’ve learned a new lesson..
Tq Devin, really helpful video 4me, tq for sharing your knowledge, You explained extremely well, thx a million...love & hugs from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia 🇲🇾
Thanks for your instructions, I have a few Adeniums here in central Australia. Last winter we had a couple of rare bad frosts which damaged the plants, I should have moved them inside but frosts are fairly rare here. Anyway I used a clean sharp blade and removed the damaged branches before the rot set in. Thankfully the plants are recovering nicely and hopefully will survive ok. Last summer there were a few seed pods but I lost most of the seeds when the pods opened and the seeds blew away, this year I will try and save the seeds and plant them.
Devin, this is the absolute best video I have come across on Adenium care. Thanks so,so much. Definitely saving to my video collection. Checking out your channel for further plant care . Again, kudos on a most magnificent video.
WOW so informative! I was gifted a desert rose a couple of years ago and I had no clue to how to care for her aside from watering when the soil was dry. Obviously very new to plant care. I mean she’s still alive so i wasn’t scrambling to find videos 101 haha I was very shocked to see you prune so aggressively and was cringing the entire time as i watched you but I now understand the purpose. She does have thinner, more delicate branches so hopefully by Aug/Sep (in LA) I can prune so she can grow back bolder. Thanks for giving me the knowledge & confidence! Hope to see some follow-up videos of those in this video.
Devin, a video that focuses on adenium flowering would be great. Your “northern” perspective is helpful (I’m in Niagara). My adenium are 6 years old, look great and haven’t flowered. I will try the winter stressing.
After i potted mine in huge pots their caudex tripled in size in one season. I used to pot them in smaller pots but their growth is that much stronger in large pots.
I recently purchased the variegated Desert Rose.. and after several weeks, it did bloom.. I had one bloom open and the other 2 fell off.. Now the leaves are turning brown (like one side of the leaf, not the entire leaf)... I feel like I am not overwatering.. Its been very hot and humid here in PA for the past several weeks, and I have had the plant in outside in the sun.. Any tips to alleviate the browning of the leaves.. THanks so much .. I will be purchasing a different fertilizer for my desert Rose... Thanks for these videos
Sometimes that browning may occur as old leaves finish and get ready to be replaced by new ones. You can try increasing water if you find it is too dry for too long
I've had Adeniums for 30 years now. I've learned some things. Mine come indoors as soon as nights get 50 to 45. Sometimes during early fall I set them out in the day and in the garage at night. At some point I give up on warm weather and put them in a corner of my office by mid November. I shut the water off except for one or two light drinks. They lose all their leaves sitting there in very low light. Sometime usually in Mar I will notice some tiny buds breaking and give them a decent drink. We don't get warm here until mid Apr or later, so I play a delay game. Just enough water to keep things moving along slowly until they can go outside in mid May keeping in mind late frosts. Once they go out, I found as you state, they can take plenty of water. That surprised me Since they naturally live in nutrient poor soils, I have avoided fertilizing them. That is going to change. I have never pruned mine and my present two are quite leggy. I never knew how or whether the time was right. Now they are going to the butcher shop as soon as flowering is over. 45 years ago I was a plant propagator in charge of rooting 100000s of cuttings a year. It got burned into my brain then, that growing plants is to a large part about timing is everything. You just filled me in on the timing pieces I was missing that will make my wonderful Adeniums even greater. Thank you. Mine are good right now, 5" caudex and 24" tall. But they could be a lot fuller. Now I know how to get there. I might send some before and afters if things turn out right.
Your growing regiment sounds exactly like mine! I’m glad we both have found the same process! I’d love to see photos of your plants, they sound amazing, feel free to send me photos via Instagram if desired
Thanks Devin, I had no idea what to do with this plant! I am not having much luck with them so I will start over with a new one. I have many plants that are beautiful but not my Desert rose.
Great video! I got busy and haven’t done my pruning or repotting yet. I’ll wait until May. New Subbie BTW! Thanks for the content. Gonna be useful on my journey starting my Desert Rose nursery and growing from Seed. From my plant I got as a gift several years ago, I grew a seed pod and harvested the seeds. I got my first babies grown from my own hand with about 100% germination rate with my method. They are two months old today. I’ll be posting their progress on my channel soon. Happy growing!!
They were surprising easy to germinate. The trick was catching the seed pods before they exploded outside. I cut them off when they were turning brown and put inside a container. Glad I did. It was almost like a large milkweed blew up. I pulled the large fluff off the end and just pressed into regular garden soil in a seed tray. After a good watering, I put in a large, clear bag to keep moist and in a short time, there were little plants popping up.
Devin, I love how your videos are so easy to understand and follow. I am a beginner at growing plants. I have a desert rose that has finally started blooming. It’s beautiful! How often do I water it while it is blooming? I live in zone 9a, Jax, Fl. It’s very hot and humid. We are in the 90’s everyday in the summer months. Should I leave it out in the hot, direct sun all day? I left my plants for 5 days to go camping. I returned and my desert rose is still blooming but a lot of the leaves have tuned yellow! It didn’t get any water while I was gone. What happened and how can I fix these? Thank you for your help.
Sometimes they’ll drop leaves while in bloom simply due to available nutrients being used on flower formation, it’s normal. In your region you can continue to water very regularly all summer and leave in the sun
Thank you for the information. Ihave had my 2 desert roses for years now and it would only give me a few leaves before they fell off. And this would happen often in the summer. I will prune them at the end of spring and see how they do. Hopefully i dont murder them completely.
Thanks so much for the great tips- I have had mine for about 4 years & this year was a first for flowers- we live in AZ- always put her outside in summer but hadn't been watering enough I guess
I finally got the courage to prune my desert rose after watching your video. Though I wasn't brave enough to cut back the tap root yet. Should I put it in shade for a week now that I've pruned it, or leave it in full sun?
Hi Devin lovely Informative video … Thank You for making me feel to look around for these Adenium Plants… Singapore has Adenium but everyone has Grafted ones … I loved the ones you have here 😊🤩 Any Idea where can I buy the ones you have ? Thanks 🙏
Hi Devin … I just happened to see your vidieo and liked it immensely .. very informative … I m a new gardener with just about learning to grow bonsai adeniums and I m your new subscriber now!
In the Arizona low desert I grow mine in a bonsai mix. I water daily, sometimes twice in the hottest months and I use a 20/20/20 Peter’s fertilizer every 2 weeks, Super Thrive and Epsom salts in between. They grow like weeds and bloom like crazy.
@@plantvibrations haha, we have to take them in from Late November through early March. Yesterday morning it was 33 degrees in my back yard at 5 AM. The desert gets a lot cooler than you might think.
Hi Devin. I have brought my desert roses inside for the winter. They sit directly in front of a window that receives morning sun. I have watched numerous channels on Desert Roses as I am new to this plant and I am trying to educate myself on how to best care for them over the winter. I was told that I needed a grow light, but after listening to you, it seems that I don’t need a grow light. There are several great channels that have great success with Desert Roses and I have found them very informative, but I am glad to have found yours as you are very easy to follow. The channels that I have watched say that a Desert Rose can be pruned anytime of the year. I am considering pruning and propagating the cuttings. Do you think that pruning my Desert Roses at this time of year would be ok or should I wait until spring to prune them? I have been studying for several weeks and I feel confident that I know how to correctly prune and care for them, but I’m just not sure if now would be a good time to prune. While successful growers tell me that the Desert Rose can be pruned at anytime of the year, I am still not sure if it’s a good idea to do that while they are wintering indoors. What do you think? Would pruning them at this time of year be ok? I am quite conflicted. Please, I need your advice. Thanks
hi delilah. you totally can use a grow light and that will do no harm. however, i find that even with grow lights they tend to drop their leaves and move into dormancy. so for me, i prefer to just let them go into their natural dormancy. that being said, its my experience that it is better to prune them while they're actively growing rather than in dormancy, and for that reason i'd wait until the spring to prune them
I just got 5 of these babies through a vendor on Etsy. After washing the original soil off of the existing roots, I dusted the roots with rooting powder and planted with some ready made (store bought) succulent mix with a little perlite added for good measure. Oh, and I used approx.4" terra cotta pots. {I'll wait until they grow a bit before moving them into larger terra cotta pots with Bonzai dimensions.} Then, I gave them a little sip of water. This was about a week ago. The leaves on almost all turned yellow and began falling off! I hope his is normal. Thereafter, I have been giving them a good dose of at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. Now, I'm just sitting back and hoping for the best. 🤞
@@plantvibrations That's reassuring, Devin. I almost panicked, thinking I had done something wrong. Here in SW Louisiana we have a late fall and short, mild winter, so I plan on leaving them outside most of the time, until we have one of those occasional, light (28-32 degrees) freezes. Actually, over there in the Arabian deserts, don't the nighttime temperatures get almost that cold? I thought they did on occasion? I haven't looked into it.
Great tutorial on desert roses! This helped me a lot. You have a knack for teaching. I would like to know the names of the plants behind you with pink and white flowers, please and thank you.

That surprised me
Since they naturally live in nutrient poor soils, I have avoided fertilizing them.
This one can bring quite tricky. I have killed a few and learned what not to do along the way!
@@plantvibrations Thanks for your feedback!
Great advice, Thank You!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much this video is very informative and to the point keep shining
thank you Denise!!
That’s amazing!! I’ve never tried growing from seed so I really need to attempt it!
So happy to find you. Happy Easter.
Happy Easter to you!!
Is osmocote a good fertilizer to use? Love this video. So informative!
Yes it is, I use it!
Great info! I'm finding good draining soil is essential.
Absolutely!
Thank you, I have learned so much from this video. I have been doing it all wrong.
Happy to help
Yes they love the regular watering in summer. Took me much trial and error to discover that
Thank you. I've learned sooo much.
I'm so glad!
It's official, your a desert rose genius 😊
Hahah more like a gardener that has killed enough of them to figure out what they don’t like!
@@plantvibrationsI can't wait to try these tips. Lol I know what you mean, that's how I learn by messing up😊
Great video. Love these plants but no clue how to care for them. Thanks.
I have another video how to care for them
Thank you so much for this information! It has helped me so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Love all your videos.
Great advice.
Thank you :-)
Awesome explanation...Thanks
Hope it helped!!
I have loads of desert rose back home in the Philippines ❤❤❤
Oh I bet they grow amazingly there!
Solution of all the problems in one vdo😁😁👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome!!
I finally got the courage to prune my desert rose after watching your video. Though I wasn't brave enough to cut back the tap root yet. Should I put it in shade for a week now that I've pruned it, or leave it in full sun?
Great job! Place it in the shade!
I am ready for pruning 😊....thank you❤
Most welcome 😊
Hi Devin lovely Informative video … Thank You for making me feel to look around for these Adenium Plants… Singapore has Adenium but everyone has Grafted ones … I loved the ones you have here 😊🤩
Any Idea where can I buy the ones you have ? Thanks 🙏
It can be very challenging to track down the non grafted ones. Perhaps search for some seeds to grow them
Thanks! Chopping my DS today to make her bushier!
Good luck!
@@plantvibrations I did it! Lets wait and See.
Thank you ive learnt a lot.
Glad to hear it!
Excellent video thanks for a the good info.

Hi Devin … I just happened to see your vidieo and liked it immensely .. very informative … I m a new gardener with just about learning to grow bonsai adeniums and I m your new subscriber now!
Awesome!! I have a video about propagating them in the works
Thanq so much sir for ur suggestions.. I ll follow u.
thank you for following!!
Dang I love that! I wish I could grow mine outdoors year round, they’re so lovely
@@plantvibrations haha, we have to take them in from Late November through early March. Yesterday morning it was 33 degrees in my back yard at 5 AM. The desert gets a lot cooler than you might think.
Awesome! Great information!
Happy to help!
New subscriber and loved your video on caring for a desert rose.
ThNk you Linda!
Thanks
hi delilah. you totally can use a grow light and that will do no harm. however, i find that even with grow lights they tend to drop their leaves and move into dormancy. so for me, i prefer to just let them go into their natural dormancy. that being said, its my experience that it is better to prune them while they're actively growing rather than in dormancy, and for that reason i'd wait until the spring to prune them
Lot's of Love from kolkata Bengal India DADA... Very informative... Also very impressed bro.. Keep up the good work♥️

Thanks for joining!!
Yeah that sort of shock is super normal for them. If you can keep them outside definitely do so and they will bounce back in a month or so
@@plantvibrations That's reassuring, Devin.
Omg , learning so much from you , I live in Florida and I wondered how to take care of them🎉❤
Love hearing that !
👍 Thanks this info will really help me!

So nice of you
Great tutorial on desert roses! This helped me a lot. You have a knack for teaching. I would like to know the names of the plants behind you with pink and white flowers, please and thank you.
Thanks!! I believe you’re referring to the Sunpatiens
@@plantvibrations Thank you! How many sunpatien plants in those containers? I would love a large display like that!

Hi
Beutiful adinium plant codex and garden
Thanks for visiting
Thank you for an excellent video. Once the roots are pruned and repotted, how should the plant be watered ? Thank you.
It is best to keep it on the dry side while it recuperates for the following 4-6 weeks, watering just once a week or so
Thank you
Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it
I love you, and your info!
