  • Hello,
    This video shows how to upgrade your manual locking hubs on your 4 wheel drive truck. The truck in this video is a 1990 Ford Bronco with the Dana 44 front axle being upgraded to the Warn Premium Locking hubs. I personally like the way these hubs look and feel and recommend this simple upgrade.
    All Dana 44 axels hubs are the same and you can use this video for reference as the Dana 44 Axel is use by multiple auto manufactures (GM, Ford, Jeep, ect..)
    This process is similar to the Dana 35, 50, and 60.

    Thank you for the short and concise video. My used 1985 Ford F-250 has a Dana 60 front axle with Warn 9790 Standard Hub. I am in the process of all installing allnew parts.The driver's side 9790 locking hub was bad as the splined section was wore out. A little research showed the Warn Premium 20990 locking hubs were a major upgrade. To me a side by side comparison showed me that the Premium ones were stronger and thereby more reliable. BTW, Warn instructions need a magnifying glass to read and I could not find it online to magnify it; it also is next to useless in installation information. Inner drive axle is threaded for a bolt to use to pull it out for snap ring installation or removal. Strength is important as the 460 is putting 250 hp to the rear wheels with 350 #ft tq; the truck is true HD at 8600 # GVW.

      The warn premiums are a great choice, just be sure to test yours out of the box (before installing) I’ve had a few sets and 1 set was defective; had to return for exchange. To test turn the hub from free to lock, it should click into lock and not rotate any further. A defective one will rotate past the “lock” and keep turning which will in effect disengage itself and if installed will no longer unlock.

      The axle does tend to push itself inward. I’m this case look behind the spindle/hub assembly and find the axle shaft, you can grab the axle and push it outward.

      Yes, these are the 20990, if your bronco has auto hubs you will need a conversion kit as well.

    How far in from the outside flat of the axle is the groove for the snap ring to jold the hub un plsce?

    • @TheFixTech
      @TheFixTech  Рік тому +1

      About 3/8 inch, if your hub seal was leaking and water got into the hub (rusted/seized) you may have to spray a penetrating oil (like WD40) and let sit. Also you can tap on the hub itself it will move a little in/out to free up against the snap ring.

    Fantastic video - as always. But why the Warn hubs. ?? It seems to be a religion whether Warn vs Mile Marker.

    • @TheFixTech
      @TheFixTech  Рік тому +2

      I like them both, my preference is the standard Warn hubs (non premiums) as they were the factory equipment used by ford in the 80’s early 90’s and are considered direct replacements. I only used the premiums for the color but do not like their function (full turn needed for locking). Warn hubs used to be made in USA and I still have a set from then, plus parts are plentiful.

    I have a 1992 Ford F150 that has the auto locking hubs. I need to replace both sides, but I want to make sure what Manual Hubs and parts I would need to order. Can you tell me which ones you would use and what if any other parts I may need? Thanks in advance. Gary

    • @TheFixTech
      @TheFixTech  Рік тому +2

      I choose the Warn premium hubs part number Warn 20990, I do not recommend these hubs. They have come down in quality and am not satisfied with their function. The Warn standard locking hubs actually preform better, Warn 9790. They both have a lifetime warranty but the 9790 locks and functions better. If switching from auto to manual hubs you will need the spindle nut kit, Warn 32720.

    My Warn premium hubs are 7 yrs old. They go from free to lock position on their own when I'm driving. Any ideas what's going on? Thx

    • @TheFixTech
      @TheFixTech  Рік тому +2

      Make sure your front axle/diff is not engaged/locked. If the axles are spinning even if the warn hubs are locked, they may slowly turn the hub into the locked position. If not, removed the hubs and clean out all the grease, there should be minimal, bare minimal surface grease on the entire hub internals. Clean everything and check for operation and reinstall.

    Is this a direct replacement for a "tophat" or Ford "flange style" ? I have a 1988 F150 4X4.

    • @TheFixTech
      @TheFixTech  Рік тому +1

      Unfortunately these will not fit the top hat style. You can convert to this style, but will need new rotors, hubs, and spindles.

    Question: 1993 Ford Bronco XLT. My hub on one side is loose (I can jiggle it a bit with my hand) and is leaking grease (spatter on the rim). The allen nuts on the cap are tight. Any ideas?

    • @TheFixTech
      @TheFixTech  11 місяців тому +1

      The Allen screws may be too long, remove the cap, there should be an oring on the internal lip of the cap. Odds are the screws are too long and are bottoming out without effectively tightening the cap.

    • @Cmoth040
      @Cmoth040 9 місяців тому +1

      @@Fc-hf1to Sure did. Worn out or, in my case, missing o-rings. There's a large, 3 inch diameter o-ring/gasket that just behind the hub cover. It retains the oil/grease in the assembly as well as provide tension in the hub cap. I bought a Warn manual hub service kit, it comes with two rings, one for each wheel assembly. Super cheap and easy fix.
