I modified my Trangia by putting steel wool on the bottom topped off with carbon felt and a wire mesh to hold it all in place. This prevents spilling and much easier to light in severe cold weather.

Not sure if already mentioned in comments, but buy a value to transfer part used gas to another bottle. Place receiving cannister in freezer for 10 mins and weigh cannister for max fill.
Your sitting in the woods chilling,does it matter if alcohol takes a few minutes extra to boil water .I’ve never understood why people are so obsessed with the time it takes to boil water unless you have an appointment of course ?.

I use the Trail Designs Sidewinder with Kojin stove for the 600ml Evernew short pot. The Kojin stove uses a batting material and the alcohol will not spill out if knocked over. Because of this it is no more dangerous than a canister stove. Denatured alcohol hasn’t been sold in California for two years so I use Heet fuel treatment for cars in the yellow bottle which is mostly methanol. This setup doesn’t simmer but I only use it for day hikes for coffee on the trail. It is very wind resistant which is unusual for an alcohol setup.Trail Designs is based in California near Yosemite park.
Nice! We don't get much Trail Designs equipment over here in the UK but it all looks like good stuff. There is a similar stove to the Kojin available here called the X-BOIL, I think I'll buy one for next winter season as they look much safer for use in and around the tent. Very valid point on the safety (or lack of) with alcohol. I’ve just bought a Trangia 27, hoping to test it out on a day walk in the woods this weekend but when we’re in our little tent, think I’ll stick to the jet boil 😮
Definitely, I think the Evernew is designed for just boiling water as it burns hotter than the Trangia. You also wouldn't want to try cooking in those titanium mugs either as they are so thin food would burn pretty quickly!
That's my second oldest Trangia burner, it's about 9 or 10 years old now. I've noticed lots of ferro rod debris left inside it, might have to give it a clean soon! 👍

Excellent video and comparison of 2 similar systems , I have long thought Evernew should have upgraded their Ti burner by mimicking the Trangia threaded cap and simmer ring 2 features sadly lacking , its a no-brainer and would I believe make their offering best in class , we can still hope .

I can never understand the concerns with a fast boiling time when using a alcohol stove. They are not like the bottled gas or liquid gas stoves. I use the alcohol stoves for the quiet , mess free and relaxing heating they offer. I take my sweet time to enjoy everything while out there. The Evernew has more jets then the Trangia and burns faster plus using more alcohol. I like the Evernew Appalachian kit they offer it's been my go to for the last 30 years. Before then it was the Trangia and kits they offer. If you like the Trangia there is a modified Trangia style made by Goshawk Outdoors in Australia. It's the Siphon Alcohol Stove Steampunk EDDY-X. It comes to a full bloom in 12 seconds. Offers all of the advantages with a faster blooming time. It's all brass included pot stand. It can be used in any item a Trangia can be used in.
If you use the full snuffer on the evernew stove just the bottom jets will be going. That's simmer mode for that stove. You can also use a soda, or soda can for that use. :)
You an use an old tin that once contained beans or something for a stand. Meth or white spirit can also be used. Available almost anywhere even at a chemists.
I like trangias and bio ethanol is definitely the way to go if using that type of fuel. My only issue with thrangias, I wish the flame adjuster was a bit looser cause depending on its position in whatver device you're using, it's sometimes difficult to adjust to a lower flame, leaving food, a fried egg for example to get absolutely obliterated. But I do like that twig burning option of that other burner so can choose between the two options (but also if you run out of fuel at least you can burn twigs) but I do like cooking with trangia and it's a cheap option too. Yeah you’ve got no chance of adjusting the simmer ring once it’s on, I find it to be near useless apart from for snuffing out the burner. The Evernew kit is crazy light though mate, it was marketed in the US as the ‘Appalachian Set’ and was widely used by through hikers due to its twig burning potential. Take care mate 👍
It’s quite easy to loosen up the flame adjuster with a bit of careful bending and twisting. That allows you to do fine adjustments while cooking, by tapping the adjuster with a stick or long metal spoon. I use a metal hook, made from a length of coathanger. The hook also allows me to pull off the adjuster if I need the full flame again.
@@Adventure-Outdoors Yes, if the burner gets too hot .. as with a tightly-encompassing windscreen that traps the heat, it goes into 'afterburn'. Then the simmer ring is not as effective .. often, the flame continuing to jet through the tiny hole in the top plate even when completely closed. My modification (packing the burner with glass wool and carbon felt) appears to have 'tamed' the burn somewhat, resulting in more effective 'simmering' when required. I still get the requisite 'bloom' (takes a little longer) but now I can put a pot over the burner immediately without snuffing it.
you can get an adaptor from amazon to fill those screw type gas canisters as trher getting harder to find them for sale now youll need a set of scales and a 3.5kg butain bottle to fill them or you just tip them
The evernew one seems to have a lot of flames escaping from the stand and looks like wind can easily affect its burning efficiency with all those extra holes. Is that something you notice in the real world usage? (FYI I Already got the evernew burner but debating if I should get the stand)

time the boil if you switch the vessels (trangia's kettle on evernew burner, evernew's mug on trangia burner). bc the wider base of kettle (plus AL) might be what you're actually measuring
The Scouts BSA do not recommend use of alcohol stoves (of any kind) due to the flame being invisible so hard to know when lit, and also the spill danger. BTW if you knock over a lit gas stove in your tent, it will likely catch your tent on fire too, before you can stop it.
The Evernew DX instructions say “when the temperature is low and stove does not give off enough heat, set Power Plate inside of upper stand”. I mistakenly used it in hot weather and it turned the burner into a bit of a flamethrower, using up the fuel in no time 😮 I think the reflected heat evaporates the fuel at a much higher rate.

Yes the Trangia will fit in the DX stand but it sits higher than the Evernew stove, which is a good thing as it brings the burner towards that 1 inch sweet spot and allows it to be snuffed out with the simmer ring; but there's not enough room in the stand to open the simmer ring to simmer if you know what I mean. I love the trangia burner. Your video is very good.y only comment is on the price of the fuel that you are using. How many pounds of corn were used to make that batch of fuel? Fuel in your neck of the woods is way more expensive than in Texas but methyl fuel is much more ecologically friendly than corn/plant fuel.
Thanks! Bio ethanol over here is made from the bi product of animal feed so it makes use of left over bio mass so it's renewable and ecologically sound. It's the same stuff as meths just without the methanol added so it burns cleaner too. All fuel is expensive in the UK, there's always some sort of tax applied to it! Cheers 👍
@@Adventure-OutdoorsRefilling from 220g Butane seems to be most economical. Works well above 10 C. And alcohol for the winter. Wood is the most underrated fuel. 1kg of home dried wood goes a long way. Good enough for overnight camp.
Yeah I think I need something to fully snuff the burner out, maybe an empty tuna can will do or something like that. The evernew is like a flame thrower, I used it whilst backpacking last week and it was like sitting around a small campfire waiting for the fuel to burn out 😄.
There are adapters that allow us to transfer butane/isobutane/propane gas from one canister to another. As for cooking inside or around tents, thats a big NO where I am (Australia) not only for the safety concern, but also because critters do come and dig into our tents or packs to look for food. We try to cook and eat AWAY from the tents.
Wait a minute, the Evernew is a stove while the Trangia is a burner. The Trangia needs a stand while the Evernew doesn't..The Evernew Stove has a duplex burner while the Trangia doesn't. If you use a cross pot stand, you'll get the full force of the stove. Bur if you remove the Cross pot stand, you'll get a seamer for your cooking while the Trangia needs the snuffer cap to control the seamer. The trangia will rust (Green) and crack while the evernew stove will last forever. .BTW, the Trangia and the Evernew Stove have a wick inside which it will force them to bloom faster while the Evernew Stove Chinese copy don't have. They need to be primed to make them bloom faster. The Evernew Stove is expensive yes but you buy once, you cry once. Meanwhile with the Trangia, once it cracks, it becomes dangerous. I threw away 4 trangias. I could've bought one Evernew Stove and forget about it.Another thing, if you make yourself a Fancy Feast cat stove or a Tuna Can Stove (more sturdy) will cost you pennies and work extremely well. It's not really a fair comparison . Thanks
Stove made from a Hobgoblin can ( idea pinched from Nobby on Step away from the screens), cost zero. No need for a stand. Windshield made from an offcut from said can. Boil time 2 minutes 30 seconds on 30 ml of Lagavulin 15 yr old (no meths available).. Weight, about, 40g plus titanium mug pot from Wildcamping International ( say 100g). Can't remember my point, but the other 720ml of Lagavulin was very nice.
@@xboil This surprises me since, filling the center with felt would allow the wicking in the outer ring of the trangia to still soak up liquid to start. So that would mean the cohesion (soaking properties) of the felt are a lot stronger that the wicking. I would love to try something out. What if you raise the felt from the bottom of the trangia, maybe by some wicking, allowing gravity to more easily spread it the wicking in the ring/jets.
@@Jonsoh811 I've tried it full with felt and only the upper half filled with felt. Both doesn't work in Trangia and Toaks Siphon. First reason: the felt keeps away the heat from the side walls, so the alcohol don't gas Second reason: overpressure for the jets can only occur in the side walls if liquid alcohol seals the bottom of the double side walls.
@@xboil So basically the felt isolates and soaks too efficient. Meaning you need something with a high enough temperature resistance, but low isolating properties. With, at the bottom, a tapered shape and low soaking properties (or a lower density) and at the top a high density wide shape. Allowing for alcohol pooling at the bottom. I know, I overthink things too much, but I just like to tinker around and do experiments.
👍👍👍 .. It makes for an excellent combo. I've filled my Trangia Burner with a combination of Ceramic Glass Wool (bottom layer) topped with a strip of tightly rolled Carbon Felt and it works perfectly. Yes, it takes a little bit longer to come to a bloom, but the burner can be used immediately after lighting. The burn appears to be more 'gentle' .. especially when using the simmer ring. Actually, this suits my style of cooking as I do not only boil water with my Trangia.
Probably, but I've yet to come anywhere near tipping over an alcohol stove so I think it's no issue if you are careful. I honestly think knocking over a gas canister is more likely as that has happened to me and I've seen it happen to others on UA-cam countless time 👍
Never seen anyone tip the burner over like that and certainly not tried it myself, pretty scary what 30mls of uncontrolled flaming alcohol is like. I have the Evernew kit and used it when working outside but the flame is quite visible and can cause concern to some people. I mainly use gas now, I prefer the control and when required the speed. If one purchases a stove that will burn with an inverted gas canister all the small amounts that no one wants to take on a trip can be used up, I’m using all my partially used canisters up to boil water at home to save energy. I use a SOTO Stormbreaker for using inverted gas canisters and it will also run on white gas (Coleman/Primus) liquid fuel which useful for very cold conditions.
Yes the Evernew burner does seem to give off a good flame, I used it this morning on the moors with a Vesuv windshield and after I boiled my water it was like sitting next to a small campfire for a few minutes until the fuel burned out! The SOTO Stormbreaker looks excellent, I have both the SOTO Amicus and Windmaster stoves and no doubt I'll get the Stormbreaker in the future.....after I've saved up 👍
@@Adventure-Outdoors Stormbreaker is a wallet breaker as well😀. It’s an excellent stove, some say the pump for white gas is too complicated. It does need a lot of pumps but the advantage is no need for preheating as most liquid fuel stoves and much less flaring up when it starts up. An investment but I feel it’s worth it especially if one likes to be out in the winter/cooler months.

If you want it all, be prepared to pay for it 😏. Evernew. I have an Evernew Aluminium Camping Bowl Set bought back in the 70's and which I have incorporated into my Trangia 28 Mini Set, that increases it's versatility multi-fold. The Evernew Quality is very good .. which I presume has not changed. Japanese will always cost more than products manufactured just West across from them on the Mainland. Safety. Agreed. Spilled burning alcohol fuel can be somewhat disruptive. Based on a You Tube Post, I have modified the majority of my Alcohol Burners, Trangia included, by adding Ceramic Wool and/or Carbon Felt to the Fuel Receptacles. So far, the results have been very encouraging. Burn performance does not appear to be affected to the extent that I feel the need to 'fall on my sword' waiting for the boil. Actually, the slightly (perceived) gentler burn, especially when using the simmer ring, suits my style of cooking (I don't just boil water). AND .. the risks of extended spillage is reduced appreciably. Here in Switzerland, the Authorities have absolutely no sense of humour with those who set fire to their forests and recreation areas .. eye-watering fines being the order of the day. Perhaps take a gander at converting fuel reservoirs from 'slosh' to 'soak'. Cheap and easy to convert back and well worth a try.
Thanks for this comparison; just a couple of thoughts:- 1) given the same-ish boil times but the greater surface area of the Trangia kettle vs the Evernew pot mug, might the Evernew burner not be more powerful? Maybe try (a back to back study) to determine boil time of the Trangia kettle with Evernew burner and the boil time of the Evernew pot mug using the Trangia burner? And:- 2) might it be better to weigh the burners when dry, and then deduct that weight from the ‘afterburn’ state weights, to determine the amount of spirit remaining? Just thinking that whether there is a little wick cloth between the inner and outer casing of either burner (or not!), the efficiency might be better understood by determining the post boil weight of each ‘wet’ burner. I think I need to get out more! 😂 Awaiting the arrival of my own Evernew burner, and will be testing and evaluating for sure; bought it because I’ve already got the DX stand, and fancied the much lighter weight, assuming burn efficiency is broadly similar to that of the great, if heavier Trangia burners already owned (2). I baulked at the cost of the Ev 500 pot mug though, four times the cost of a 550 Ti mug by other vendors. I’m sure it’s great, that said, and the indented base makes perfect sense. Thanks!
Good job Ben great test and analysis of 2 stoves. I would be wary of using anything made of aluminium with it's connection to Alzheimers. I would always opt for titanium which is both light and very durable and the cost will be covered by many years of efficient service. ATB mate. Sure you’ve been using the Appalachian Set since 1992? Don’t think they were made until nearly twenty years after that date.

The flame adjuster will loosen up with use. Mine works fine now. I just push it to where I want it with my Titanium Spork.

I use the spirit burner in the Trangia 27 all summer long. The vango gel just does not work well in the Trangia burner although safer.

I mistakenly used it in hot weather and it turned the burner into a bit of a flamethrower, using up the fuel in no time 😮 I think the reflected heat evaporates the fuel at a much higher rate.
Ahh I should’ve read the instructions 😂. I did notice that the performance dropped when using the power plate so I’ve stopped using it 👍.

Yes the Trangia will fit in the DX stand but it sits higher than the Evernew stove, which is a good thing as it brings the burner towards that 1 inch sweet spot and allows it to be snuffed out with the simmer ring; but there's not enough room in the stand to open the simmer ring to simmer if you know what I mean. I love the trangia burner. Your video is very good.y only comment is on the price of the fuel that you are using. How many pounds of corn were used to make that batch of fuel? Fuel in your neck of the woods is way more expensive than in Texas but methyl fuel is much more ecologically friendly than corn/plant fuel.
Thanks! Bio ethanol over here is made from the bi product of animal feed so it makes use of left over bio mass so it's renewable and ecologically sound. It's the same stuff as meths just without the methanol added so it burns cleaner too.
All fuel is expensive in the UK, there's always some sort of tax applied to it! Cheers 👍

Wood is the most underrated fuel. 1kg of home dried wood goes a long way. Good enough for overnight camp.
For a full snuff out for the evernew stove would be a great stainless steel container the size of the ever to fully knock out the flames.
Yeah I think I need something to fully snuff the burner out, maybe an empty tuna can will do or something like that. The evernew is like a flame thrower, I used it whilst backpacking last week and it was like sitting around a small campfire waiting for the fuel to burn out 😄.
There are adapters that allow us to transfer butane/isobutane/propane gas from one canister to another. As for cooking inside or around tents, thats a big NO where I am (Australia) not only for the safety concern, but also because critters do come and dig into our tents or packs to look for food. We try to cook and eat AWAY from the tents.
Wait a minute, the Evernew is a stove while the Trangia is a burner. The Trangia needs a stand while the Evernew doesn't..The Evernew Stove has a duplex burner while the Trangia doesn't. If you use a cross pot stand, you'll get the full force of the stove. Bur if you remove the Cross pot stand, you'll get a seamer for your cooking while the Trangia needs the snuffer cap to control the seamer. The trangia will rust (Green) and crack while the evernew stove will last forever. .BTW, the Trangia and the Evernew Stove have a wick inside which it will force them to bloom faster while the Evernew Stove Chinese copy don't have. They need to be primed to make them bloom faster. The Evernew Stove is expensive yes but you buy once, you cry once. Meanwhile with the Trangia, once it cracks, it becomes dangerous. I threw away 4 trangias. I could've bought one Evernew Stove and forget about it.Another thing, if you make yourself a Fancy Feast cat stove or a Tuna Can Stove (more sturdy) will cost you pennies and work extremely well. Stove made from a Hobgoblin can ( idea pinched from Nobby on Step away from the screens), cost zero. No need for a stand. Windshield made from an offcut from said can. Boil time 2 minutes 30 seconds on 30 ml of Lagavulin 15 yr old (no meths available).. Weight, about, 40g plus titanium mug pot from Wildcamping International ( say 100g). Can't remember my point, but the other 720ml of Lagavulin was very nice.

Put some graphite felt (like from the x-boil) in the trangia. Seems to me that it would make the ideal combo.

@@xboil This surprises me since, filling the center with felt would allow the wicking in the outer ring of the trangia to still soak up liquid to start. So that would mean the cohesion (soaking properties) of the felt are a lot stronger that the wicking. I would love to try something out. What if you raise the felt from the bottom of the trangia, maybe by some wicking, allowing gravity to more easily spread it the wicking in the ring/jets.
@@Jonsoh811 I've tried it full with felt and only the upper half filled with felt. Both doesn't work in Trangia and Toaks Siphon.
First reason: the felt keeps away the heat from the side walls, so the alcohol don't gas
Second reason: overpressure for the jets can only occur in the side walls if liquid alcohol seals the bottom of the double side walls.
@@xboil So basically the felt isolates and soaks too efficient. Meaning you need something with a high enough temperature resistance, but low isolating properties. With, at the bottom, a tapered shape and low soaking properties (or a lower density) and at the top a high density wide shape. Allowing for alcohol pooling at the bottom. I know, I overthink things too much, but I just like to tinker around and do experiments.

I've filled my Trangia Burner with a combination of Ceramic Glass Wool (bottom layer) topped with a strip of tightly rolled Carbon Felt and it works perfectly.
Yes, it takes a little bit longer to come to a bloom, but the burner can be used immediately after lighting. The burn appears to be more 'gentle' .. especially when using the simmer ring. Actually, this suits my style of cooking as I do not only boil water with my Trangia.

Probably, but I've yet to come anywhere near tipping over an alcohol stove so I think it's no issue if you are careful. I honestly think knocking over a gas canister is more likely as that has happened to me and I've seen it happen to others on UA-cam countless time 👍
Never seen anyone tip the burner over like that and certainly not tried it myself, pretty scary what 30mls of uncontrolled flaming alcohol is like.
I have the Evernew kit and used it when working outside but the flame is quite visible and can cause concern to some people.
I mainly use gas now, I prefer the control and when required the speed.
If one purchases a stove that will burn with an inverted gas canister all the small amounts that no one wants to take on a trip can be used up, I’m using all my partially used canisters up to boil water at home to save energy.
I use a SOTO Stormbreaker for using inverted gas canisters and it will also run on white gas (Coleman/Primus) liquid fuel which useful for very cold conditions.
Yes the Evernew burner does seem to give off a good flame, I used it this morning on the moors with a Vesuv windshield and after I boiled my water it was like sitting next to a small campfire for a few minutes until the fuel burned out!
The SOTO Stormbreaker looks excellent, I have both the SOTO Amicus and Windmaster stoves and no doubt I'll get the Stormbreaker in the future.....after I've saved up 👍

It’s an excellent stove, some say the pump for white gas is too complicated.
It does need a lot of pumps but the advantage is no need for preheating as most liquid fuel stoves and much less flaring up when it starts up.
An investment but I feel it’s worth it especially if one likes to be out in the winter/cooler months.
B&Q are doing 2L of ethanol for £8 if you want it cheep.

Cost. Yes, titanium will always cost more than aluminium .. and 'lightweight AND robust' will have a price premium .. the eternal triangle, 'Weight / Durability / Cost'. If you want it all, be prepared to pay for it 😏.
Evernew. I have an Evernew Aluminium Camping Bowl Set bought back in the 70's and which I have incorporated into my Trangia 28 Mini Set, that increases it's versatility multi-fold. The Evernew Quality is very good .. which I presume has not changed. Japanese will always cost more than products manufactured just West across from them on the Mainland.
Safety. Agreed. Spilled burning alcohol fuel can be somewhat disruptive. Based on a You Tube Post, I have modified the majority of my Alcohol Burners, Trangia included, by adding Ceramic Wool and/or Carbon Felt to the Fuel Receptacles.
So far, the results have been very encouraging. Burn performance does not appear to be affected to the extent that I feel the need to 'fall on my sword' waiting for the boil. Actually, the slightly (perceived) gentler burn, especially when using the simmer ring, suits my style of cooking (I don't just boil water).
AND .. the risks of extended spillage is reduced appreciably. Here in Switzerland, the Authorities have absolutely no sense of humour with those who set fire to their forests and recreation areas .. eye-watering fines being the order of the day.
Perhaps take a gander at converting fuel reservoirs from 'slosh' to 'soak'. Cheap and easy to convert back and well worth a try.
Thanks for this comparison; just a couple of thoughts:- 1) given the same-ish boil times but the greater surface area of the Trangia kettle vs the Evernew pot mug, might the Evernew burner not be more powerful? Maybe try (a back to back study) to determine boil time of the Trangia kettle with Evernew burner and the boil time of the Evernew pot mug using the Trangia burner? And:-
2) might it be better to weigh the burners when dry, and then deduct that weight from the ‘afterburn’ state weights, to determine the amount of spirit remaining? Just thinking that whether there is a little wick cloth between the inner and outer casing of either burner (or not!), the efficiency might be better understood by determining the post boil weight of each ‘wet’ burner. I think I need to get out more! 😂
Awaiting the arrival of my own Evernew burner, and will be testing and evaluating for sure; bought it because I’ve already got the DX stand, and fancied the much lighter weight, assuming burn efficiency is broadly similar to that of the great, if heavier Trangia burners already owned (2). I baulked at the cost of the Ev 500 pot mug though, four times the cost of a 550 Ti mug by other vendors. I’m sure it’s great, that said, and the indented base makes perfect sense. Thanks!

Good job Ben great test and analysis of 2 stoves. I would be wary of using anything made of aluminium with it's connection to Alzheimers. I would always opt for titanium which is both light and very durable and the cost will be covered by many years of efficient service.
