    The bigger model is the 25, the smaller model is the 27, and the diameter of the frypan for the 25 is 22cm. Makes perfect sense.

      My understanding was that trangia was established in 1921, the 25 stormcooker was introduced in 1925 and the 27 stormcooker was introduced in 1927.

    Great video. I'm currently writing about a trip to Ecuador back in 1998. There were 3 of us in our team and I did most of the cooking on a Trangia (I believe it was a 25 kit). Well, in some spectacular cloud rainforest, I cooked 3 meals a day for virtually 5 monthsfor 3 adults on that little beast....including the occasional cake! This was using just the spirit burner...and even at relatively high altitudes, it did extremely well, including being used just to warm our hands!

      That sounds like some trip! They're definitely really capable cooking units; I guess that's why they've been in production for so long. I'm yet to make a cake on one yet but I'll get around to it someday. Thanks for watching 👍

      @@marianneelliot-hansen You put the smaller pot in the bigger, and then the frying pan on top. Using both the pots gives you a more even heat. Works great for muffins and similar :)

      you should also turn the heat down on the burner (using the simmer ring), and it can be a good idea to put a few small rocks between the pots so the aluminium doesn't touch (to prevent hot spots)

    9:45 you can rotate pot holder 1/6 of a turn,and it will sit on lower part of integrated 3 flip style pot holders,so your small diameter pots and mugs will be in optimal distance from flame,and you can use upper part,like you showed in video,for small diameter fry pans.

    Very informative, thx! Btw, if you add just a little bit of water into the pan directly after the frying and carefully deglaze it, it gives you a nice little sauce you can pour over the potato mash. If you add a little bit of flour first, then the water, the sauce will even be thickened

      agreed. personally what i do is after i remove the sausages i add in a small diced onion and cook until the onions are nice and soft. then i add in some flour and maybe some oil or butter if it looks too dry and cook that for a bit, then add water, wine, beer, apple juice etc. and cook to get a nice, thick sauce while also deglazing and cleaning the pan. some salt and pepper and it goes great with the sausages and instant mash.

      Hah yeah, I was just going to mention that as well. Pretty basic kitchen tip there :) do it all time both at home and in the field. It's three-for-one, tasty sauce, less waste and easier cleanup.

    Great meal that. At 17:00 , even with those burnt bits it'll be fine to clean. First scrape what comes out easy, use the water from the veggies pan to soak, returning to the boil, turn off and let it sit whilst you eat. A nice tip might be to make a sauce, similar to cleaning. Remove some of the actual black bits if its too bad, then deglaze with the some of the veggies water, reduce and thicken with butter and a little of the mash (if you don't have flour). Same as at home really when you cook sausages, steak...
    BTW, the trangia 27 pans are both rated as 1 litre each. just one is marginally bigger to allow stacking.

    Have to admit there is nowhere to turn in regard to, "are aluminium kettles safe"? (Why is the kettle unsafe but the pans are OK?) Aluminium is considered a nuerotoxin, (harmful to nerve tissue) however brass cookware is considered unsafe due to it containing lead. Copper is also considered harmful unless its tinned however we use copper pipes! Cast iron leaches, so where do we go? I think you'd have to be mouse sized to suffer ill effects from the very minerals our bodies use to sustain life. Or shall we try the chocolate tea pot? 😊
    Aluminium has been used since WW1 in military, domestic and medical kitchens and personally, I'd be more concerned with the plastic in the sausage skins and tea bags and the processed instant mash!

      Thanks mate. Indeed, I think the irony is that what you cook in the pans is far more likely to dictate health outcomes than the cooking equipment itself. Although when I do finally keel over from all the bacon, eggs and beer I'm definitely blaming the aluminium kettle! 😂👍 Take care mate.

But bacon and other cured meats often contain nitrites and nitrates, preservatives that when cooked over high heat form nitrosamines, a known carcinogen. (Its basically how they cure it nowadays thats the problem. They used to hang it for weeks, now its done in hours!)
      Classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, bacon and other processed meats, have been added to a list of more than 100 known carcinogens, including tobacco smoke and asbestos. Enjoy!

      Just because aluminium rich fluid is detected in pockets in the brains of dementia/parkinson's sufferers doesn't mean aluminium is to blame for the disease. Correlation doesn't mean causation.

      There is growing and consistent evidence that aluminium cookware is toxic to life, particularly older cookware. In contrast, stainless steel or cast iron without coatings appear to be the safest. Non-stick coatings are particularly toxic as a rule if ingested.
      For example:
      The highest cytogenotoxicity was observed in the 6-year-old aluminum pot and the least in the new aluminum pot… indications that the aluminum pot-boiled water contains substances with the potential to be cytotoxic and cause mutations in somatic cells (Alabi et al, 2020).
      Aluminum cookware leaches trace metals such Cd, As, Pb and Al in boiled water…. significant increase in abnormal sperm cells and a significant decrease total mean sperm count… Cd was present in the three aluminum pots at concentrations higher than the acceptable limits recommended [by the US EPA] (Alabi et al, 2021).

    I love the 27T for kayaking and short day tripping. The 25T is perfect for more than two people. A tip for those who make full-on cooking of one dish meals or chili stews... the 25T affords you more room inside for stirring your foods without needing to be careful of spilling over the top sides. This helps for clean up time too. Love them both 💕!

      @@TheBikerDodge the T stands for TRANGIA STORMCOOKER SERIES. The other letters are telling you the materials for a given model in the TRANGIA STORMCOOKER Series lineup.

    Great, they say it is big for hiking but man does it come in handy for windy days. My favorite thing camping and backpacking is cooking and I feel it is just worth it. Thanks for the review.

    Good review of both sets. I only have the 25. Had it for around 30 years and have upgraded to non stick pots and pan, plus cutting board/drainer.
    I did exactly like you and swapped out the kettle for stainless steel. Same make and purchased the pot stand.
    The pot stand is a ridiculous price, but in my view is a game changer. It allows for so many other smaller pots to be used.
    Only thing I don't agree with is getting the Trangia model gas burner. I've been using GoSystems copy burner and it's going strong nearly three years on for £22. The Trangia is close to three times the price.
    I also have the Trangia Triangle, which works with the gas stove and the Trangia Mini, which is great for a day out for one person.
    Finally, I picked up two Trangia aluminium plates which stack neatly on the outside base of the 25 under the strap.

      Cheers! I recently bought 2 of the Trangia aluminium plates as well; a good addition to the kit. I’ve pretty much given up using gas with them now, I had the Go Systems burner but it fell apart, and on a trip up to Sweden in spring the Trangia burner started to play up. I’ve cleaned it out but it still keeps spluttering. I think I might have to add the Trangia mini to the collection next 👍

    The 25 or 27 are both fine. You can also use a billy pot to enclose both, that could be used to cook over coals and for more people if need be. I usually bring a DIY alcohol stove inside to cook two foods at once, just like at home, but cooking on a fire is a special kind of luxury that I endulge

    Good and informative review. Have the kit myself and love it. All from trout,beef to breakfast is all doable in this kit. Even better with the gas upgrade. A little info - The two Saucepans is 1L each. The kettle is 0.6L.

    I've had a 27 NS with the kettle for many years. I'm not using it just now due to the health issues with aluminium & non stick. Toying with the Idea of getting two pots and the frypan in hard anodised, it's safer and still non stick apparently. Trangia only produce the kettles in aluminium so I'll just use a pot to boil water. like the video, nice to watch someone who has actually used what they're demonstrating.

    Thanks for the great review & comparison, the new UL aluminium is very good as you demonstrated with the 27 kit, cleans easily enough. If you have only the 27 kit & need more capacity, add the 2.5 litre billy. It too is now in the lighter & stronger UL aluminium. That's what I've added to my 27 & do steam baking with it too.

    used trangia stoves for years use the 27 set when going for a days fishing with the other half or just a quick couple of nights camping. if on a longer trip or with more people i take the 25 or the billy can for the 27 along with a zebra tiffin 14cm stack an store a spare burner an stand for the trangia inside the tiffin. that way you can cook an keep a few things warm in layers as well all great kit

    I've been using the 27 for a few years on my solo trips and I absolutely love it. If you remove the burner and wind shield, adding a tea light underneath efficiently keeps your kettle warm, which is nice. Also a nice way to preheat the alcohol. As for the difference in burn time that you experience, note that ethanol has a bit higher energy density than methanol does. Alcohol is synonymous with ethanol here in Norway and I think in Sweden as well. I just got a great deal on the 25 set with a gas burner, which I don't have, for my 27, so now I will have both sets and both alcohol and gas options. I've never cooked with gas before, so that will be interesting. Question though; is the 27 and 25 bases the same height? I usually boil water for my coffee with the rest of the burn time after cooking my meal and then use a tea light to keep it warm until later. I'm wondering if that will still work with the 25.

      @@TOAOZuur: Yes, I'm amazed this isn't common knowledge. I didn't learn it during my years as a scout and I've never heard anyone mention it. But this is the absolute most reliable way of using it and if you're on a canoe trip or something, then combining this with a ferro rod, gives you a completely fool proof way of lighting a fire as well, since you can light the alcohol with the ferro rod and the tealight burns wet. One tealight can keep a pot of soup hot for several hours, which is an amazing thing to have in the winter. :)
      They do sell a "winter attachment", where you use alcohol to preheat the alcohol, but alcohol is a precious commodity, while you can easily get some pine pitch to replace the tealight, saving precious fuel.

      I use a Kojin diy stove to preheat the trangia but thst works well too! I used to carry just a fiberglass pad like a cotton pad, which is actually enough to preheat the trangia, but the Kojin stove allows me to cook two pots at once, provided I have another pot stand. Useful for rice/pasta while cooking Sth else.
      For keeping food warm I find a pot cozy incredibly easy to diy, and very resourceful - be it to keep food warm while cooking, to hold the pot as a bowl to eat out of, or to keep tea warm for a stronger brew or to drink later.

    I have the 27 and it works fine for just me. I like the way it packs down into a small bundle. To cook for 2 or more I'd just add the Trangia billy pot for the 27, then it works for 2 or more for sure.

    Thank you for this comparison. I have a 27. I’ve not used it camping yet but I did cook my Sunday lunch using the spirit burner. I’m vegetarian and made apple sauce in a pan which I set aside. Cooked potatoes and carrots in the slightly smaller inner pan, then started cauliflower and dwarf beans in the outer pan, keeping them going by putting the outer on top of the inner while the potatoes cooked through. I cooked a veggie 1/4lb pulled pork burger in the frying pan and served the meal. It worked well: four veg, apple sauce with burger. All the veg cut small to speed cooking. All non stick pans. The two pans are each 1litre. I’m confident I could cook most things while camping using the 27. PS: also recently bought a new Trangia gas burner on EBay for £38.

    You can get spare rubber rings, if you by accident melt them or the get damaged in any way :) and just a hint; if you put the buckle on the strap, on the side, it won't dent your pan.

    I don't use soap to clean the frying pan. I leave brownish layer for seasoning purposes. That becomes pretty non-stick. Also alcohol burner is better since it's flame can touch different points of the pan heating it a little bit more uniformly. Gas stove's flame is way too concentrated. And I use plastic utensils such as Light My Fire Sporks with a little bit of attention. Haven't had any issue so far. On final suggestion, I place a paper napkin under the teapot to prevent scratches.

    I've used the "duossal" pots for 20 years and recently got non-stick lid. Comments already point out you add some water to frying pan and deglaze to make a gravy. One other tip is the nested pans you can use the wider diameter one first to cook contents then rest it ontop of the narrower pan while it's cooking something to keep it warm. So e.g curry+rice you'd cook the curry first in the wider pot then cook the rice in the narrower pot with the curry pot resting ontop, then it's plate up.

      I've recently upgraded my 25 set with 2 duossal pans, they seem to be much more robust than the fully aluminium version. But yeah there's definitely an art to cooking with 3 pans and one burner! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

      @@Adventure-Outdoors I heard they stopped and then restarted duossal? I got them as have the heat conduction of Alu on outside to give more even cooking and the scrub clean of steel inside. The 27 duossal pan by itself makes a good basis for a lighter cook system if you don't need all the functionality of the full kit.

    Me and the wife have been using the 27 for some years now and have managed some good meals we also use a aditional burner to speed up the preocess but I have just (yesterday) picked up a 2nd hand 25,as for the burner ,the Trangia one is worth the extra money as the Chinese ones seem to be difficult to control the flame.

    Great comparison. Now I have the 25 but this video makes me thinking about adding a 27 to my outdoor collection ass well. Maybe the Duossal frypan is something for you. I found it quite easy to clean and it can withstand a good portion of abuse on petrol stoves with high flames.

      I've got the duossal frying pan on a 27 but it still sticks. I recently swapped to a non-stick pan. Even so I'll make a gravy as part of cleaning last step.

    Nice review. I just started researching Trangia for motorcycle camping. Leaning toward the 25 because I will have room for it. Will probably go with the gas burner but I understand that the alcohol burner can use moonshine (grain alcohol) - commercially available as Everclear here in the US.

      @@Hogdriver88 cheers! I think the 25 is the way to go for motorcycle camping, you’ll get the extra room to fry a steak, bacon & eggs etc. without worrying about the size and weight. The 27 is just a bit too small. Ride safe mate 👍

    At last, someone who knows how to light a Trangia properly 😂 Gt.Video, much appreciated 👍 I bought the mini a few years ago now, fantastic little unit, definitely a one person stove however! During lockdown I got the 27 and since then have changed out the frying pan for non-stick and also one of the pots, should have gone for the non-stick version in the first place😂 and last but not least bought the ‘Go-Gas’ gas adapter, brilliant! I think I will be passing both stoves onto my boys in due course!! Regards from deepest Dorset 👍

    Since this video was made Steve from Firebox has brought out a gas burner that fits Trangia gear and the great thing about it is the titanium diffuser which works very well to alleviate the hot spot when using pots and especially the frying pan. I use the GSI hard anodised aluminium kettle, lighter than stainless and no worries about naked aluminium ( the bad press that it may cause Alzheimer’s has been debunked some time ago)

    I've used a Trangia 27 set for well over decade. great simple cookset that can easily cook for two. It's a bit more of a challenge cooking enough food for 3 with it though. Mine has the non-stick frypan and I recently swapped out the pots for the hard anodised ones. I'm aiming to save up for one of the Duossal (stainless steel lined aluminum) 25 sets for cooking for more people. BTW the pots for the 27 are one litre each and the inner pot is marked for 300ml and 500ml.

      I find upgrading one part at a time is enough. Buy a basic Trangia number of choices and then get the non stick or anodized pan. Get one duossal pot for acidic foods like apples, tomatoes, chilies etc. You can do other things in aluminum like rice, pasta, boil potatoes or other veggies even make soups - anything non acidic thst won’t corrode the pot. That’s my ideal setup - anodized pan, duossal outter pot and aluminum inner pot. No kettle, the pots boil water faster, just be careful when pouring. No trangia disc, I made my own for 3€. I also made pot cozies for both pots to keep something warm for rehidration or while I cook something else. On another pot. It’s also quite useful to pack an extra diy alcohol stove to boil rice separately while you cook the main part of the dish.
      I also got silicone Stretchy lids for storing non liquid foods in the pots so I don’t have to cook every single meal. Chilly and curry taste great cold as well as hot, especially when I cook on summer nights and eat the rest for an early lunch the next day - at night it’s warming and in the daytime refreshing.

      I wanted to get the duossal too but I saw the Tatonka Multi set which goes for 30 only, so I’m getting that instead. And instead of buying their native hard anodized I got the Alocs knockoff and got it for the price of two trangia pots, which is nice because of the simmer adjuster and it comes with a pot lid. Still have to get the pan from trangia,. The pot stand is easy to DIY out of mesh.

    Hi. Just rotate your pot stand so that it sits on its long edges when using T27 cookset. You can then lower your teapot towards the flame.

    I have a trangia 27.
    I never go a strainer or kettle with it. I think they are all extras. I never go thestrainer board either with my unit.
    I use a 2litre domed kettle i got from asda many years ago, it just fits the unit. The gas burner i recently got. But still use spirit burner.
    Its nice to have a back up unit. I believe the 25 is 2 inches wider.
    But on the whole its a very good unit, its not heavy or bulky really, you get used to it like an old friend.
    Very versatile, i think so as used by swedish military, so must be pretty good in bad conditions to.
    Dont like nonstick, pfas and others gets into food. Prefer, stainless steel or alloy.

      Cheers Paul, the 27 unit is a winner. I saw someone on Master Chef deglaze a pan once, although I seem to remember they'd cooked something more ambitious than 6 snags, instant mash and tinned veg 😂👍

      It is called deglasing and you should do it everytime you cook something in a pan, use the hot liquid to clean the pan, then reduce it down, then add to the dish. Ideal sauce base, adds flavor to everything, and helps clean the pan too.
      If this doesn't clean it, barkeepers friend works

    I have cooked for three adults after a hard days walking in the hills with a 27. I used the 2.5 Litre Billy can. The 27 fits within it snugly so takes very little space

    Honestly I'd say the best set up for two would be a 27 with a 2.5L billy can, the stove stows inside it while traveling then you can hang the billy can over the camp fire and you've still got a full set to cook up some sides with or even eat out

    Been using a 27 for years. Its definitely a Johnny no mates option, especially the kettle. Would definitely recommend the real trangia gas adaptor which is as quick as a jet boil but obviously not as convenient. I now use premium bio ethanol not Meths, it seems to last longer and less soot. Coleman extreme gas works best but I revert to the Coleman 442 stove when super chilly

      Yeah I'm going to get the Trangia burner, cheap Chinese crap is a false economy. I've been using that Vango bio ethanol as well, loads better than that purple stuff I used to drink 😂. I tried some of the Go Systems gas the other week up in Scotland, it was freezing and it burned really well and hot, just as good as the Coleman Extreme but £2 cheaper, they claim it works down to -20.     When storing the burner inside the kettle please keep the stove in the little yellow polythene bag ! Otherwise you can get galvanic action between the kettle and the stove. They corrode each other. Sadly i took over as scout leader and found some 7 Trangia systems ruined because of incorrect storage without the polybag ! Any polybag will do the trick .

    you should never use a metal sharp object like a fork to stir around the pot, because this way your chances to scrape microparticles of aluminium are really there! (and then in your food) This way you also damage the sealed duraluminium surface of the pots and your food will always be exposed to particles from then on... wood or plastic utensils are the right solution. In my experience the 27 is just big enough to feed two, but not much else. I bought one for our Patagonia trek (3 adults) and it was not enough, although I already knew this and carried another Trangia with a Ti Firebox stove. Trangia is a superb design (super simple with NO moving parts to fail), also for cooking with gas, since the pots sit very low and secure (not like the traditional gas burners that are fixed on top of the canister), besides perfectly protected from the wind. In many places the use of gas canisters is mandatory, which is ok because of forest fire prevention, but I prefer Alcohol and wood stoves (always carry both). With my Ti Firebox stove I carry Ti pots, which are supern in terms of weight, but quite poor for cooking! The only con I see in the Trangia kit is the lack of lids for the pots, I guess plastic ones similar to the strain-cut devise would be fine. greetings from wild, wet, windy and wonderful Western Patagonia

    I have one of the old 27 kits (there is no cutout for gas burner on it) that I picked up at a second hand shop also picked up a second base which I drilled a hole in for the gas burner.

    Terrific video - I have the 27 and going across Canada on bike with another. Anxious that it won’t be enough for a hungry twosome! This video really helped see that it can be. Wondering your thoughts on getting the 2.5l billy can to add to this to round out the cooking capacity for 2?

      Thanks Barry, sounds like you've got a good trip planned! I guess the 2.5L billy can might be a good idea if you want to cook a large stew/soup, I have the larger 4.5L billy can but in my opinion its too big for the Trangia 25. 2.5L sounds more sensible plus the billy has a bail arm so you can hang it over a campfire and save your fuel 👍

    I just ordered the Hard Anodized 25 but Ill probably add the 27 Hard Anodized as well. There are links to aluminum and Alzheimers and the anodization process greatly lessens the risk. I wish Trangia made the 28 in HA or Stainless Steel, that would be an amazing motorcycle kit.

      Cheers! I've recently bought the Trangia 'duossal' pans for my 25 unit, they are aluminium on the outside but stainless steel on the inside which makes them easier to clean.     Thank you for this video. I have been considering a stove for backpacking and this looks like a fantastic option. I had been considering something like a Jetboil or Primus stove but this seems more versatile, and a better value.
    Also, after watching your video, I realize that someone had one of these at a yard sale I went to a few weeks ago. The pieces were scattered across several tables and bins, but I remember the windscreen and the burner, plus the alcohol bottle. If only I had realized, I probably could have put the stove together and bought it for $5 or so! Oh well.

      I began with a 25 Alu in 1980s, then sold it for a 27 duossal, I got a 28 (mini) and found the flame too wild so then got a Jetboil Sol Ti in 2012 but then went back the 27 as a Jetboil only does one thing well (boiling water fast) while a 27 duossal can cook anything. Swapped lid to non-stick recently and splashed out on the official fuel bottle.
      Looking back at what I paid the full 25 kit cost me £20 in 1987. Costs a lot more now and the only change they made is a hole in the base for the gas conversion.

    omg, he threw that roasted aromatics away ... put some tomato paste in the pan, fry it a little ... deglaze with red wine ... bring to boil ... add beef stock and reduce for 15 mins or so (maybe add some garlic powder to it) ... you will have a delicious sauce to it

    What is better for an emergency situation like a power out, the gas version or the alcohol? I mean i can store some alcohol pretty long i guess, how long you can store such gas cartridges? I can of favor the version with spiritus as we call it. That gas thing kind of scares me :)

      Cheers Russ. The same thing happened to my kettle, I read somewhere that it's a layer of oxidisation and it shouldn't be cleaned as it helps prevent the aluminium leaching into the water. I'm not sure how true this is but it does make sense, almost like a process of hard anodisation. Atb mate.

      @@Adventure-Outdoors Exactly right. "Cleaning it off" is just bringing fresh aluminium to the surface, ready to react with whatever it comes into contact with next. Anodizing is just oxidation, sealing it up tight. Leave it be.

    tip:
    burn the oil till it begins to smoke a bit for couple of minutes and the pan will be almost non stick.....

    I find that the gas burner concentrates the heat in the middle of the frying pan, the meths flame spreads better under the pan, I do prefer the gas though, cleaner and easier to regulate.

    Wonder if you can help pls had my trangia 25 out for the second time ,so call me a newbie .was on a beach camp there wasn't a great deal of wind so when it came to lighten the burner (methylated spirit) it went out quite quickly when placing the pans on .Does it need to be lit for a while before use ?,or am I missing something out?

      Hi, I usually let the stove burn for around a minute until it is ‘primed’; this is where the stove is burning fully and flaming from all of the holes (jets) on the stove. There are times when I’ve lit the stove and just chucked the kettle straight on only to find it has gone out so it does happen. 👍

    Do all the kits come with the strainer/cutting board? I don’t see any of them listed. Also do you think the aluminum base is safe enough to start a small wood fire? Or will the aluminum melt

      I'm pretty sure they all come with the cutting board, but I've just had a quick look and you're right, they don't seem to show them. I wouldn't risk a fire in the wind shield, the aluminium is pretty thin, probably best to buy a dedicated firebox/woodstove for that I reckon 👍

      Hi, cheers! Yes you’re right they don’t include the gas burner with any of the kits. I think this is largely to do with the price of the gas burner, it’s an optional extra but entirely safe to use with any Trangia kettle or pan 👍

      Hi, I don’t think it fits like it should but I guess you could just rest it on top, due to the size difference the heat wouldn’t get to the edge of the frying pan though which could be a problem.

      I'n not sure, the unit has those 3 pan holder brackets that fit the Trangia pans exactly. Anything larger or smaller might not sit well, I guess you can only try it and see if they fit 👍

    Once You’ve done the sausages, add some onion and some water and the fat from the sausages will make a sort of gravy and help clean the pan
