    Very good review of the most challenging part of the F6. Your headphone routing explanation helped me to understand some issues, but one persists: Using a DAW ( Logic Pro), I can record directly to the audio track, using AIF and setting the headphone routing to USB1 Left and Right. But setting the headphone routing to the USB port automatically removed the routing of the headphones when I am speaking into the microphone. This is a simple setup, one cardioid mic, to the F6, connected to the iMac, audio ports on the mac and the Logic Pro setup all point to the F6,. If I remove the headphone routing from USB-1 to Port 1 Left-right, or the mix left right, I do not get playback from the app into my headphones. I am open to suggestions from the community. Thank you,

      @@ChrisSpiegl you actually can record to the F6 in 32-bit while using it as an interface in 24-bit. Setting it up for this is unintuitive, but I've done it. You need to set the recording mode to Dual (24bit+32bit), then you can enable AIF with Rec while in 32bit mode. Check out Gerald Undone's video "Zoom F6 - Can It Do Everything?" at the 5:57 mark.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  3 роки тому +1

      Meaning you'd like to have a stereo signal which is recorded by the F6.
      There are two ways I can think of.
      The easiest would be to get two crsp.li/RodeVXLR adapters (Mini Jack to XLR) and then a cable which splits your stereo Mini Jack to two Mono Mini Jacks.
      Then you can record two channels of your backup track.
      Alternatively and with less cables, you could connect the F6 to a computer in multi track mode and send the music out to the F6 over USB. Then on the device you can select two channels which should record the USB audio. Downside is that you can not use 32bit float mode in this case.
      Good luck and if you have more questions, you can also join us on Discord ( crsp.li/Discord ) 🌸.

      The Zoom F6 - by default - records all active inputs (up to 6) onto the SD card. Additionally, you can activate the L/R mixdown recording as well. So yes, this is what it is designed for.

    The biggest issue i am having currently is that i cannot silence tracks temporarily without turning the gain all the way down losing where it was previously set. Ture, that is a limitation. One idea would be that on the home screen you can use the check mark button (below the menu button) to cycle through the different channels and by doing so listen to juts one at a time.

    Hi Chris, do you mind if I ask you another F6-related question? I'm using a Shure SM7B, but I found out that I needed an additional preamp to boost the signal. I was under the impression that the F6 had enough power for the 7B, but even with the gain at 100%, it was very quiet. I bought a Fethead from Triton Audio, but when I plug it in, it completely cuts off the signal. Phantom power is on, at least I'm pretty sure it is. I don't see an option to turn it off, just toggle between voltage options. Do you think this is an issue with the Fethead? Or does the F6 not play well with others in this capacity?

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 роки тому

      Hi Joshua, I personally have not had a chance to play with the SM7B but I would assume that the F6 could handle it out of the box (specifically with 32bit float). But I would also say that a Fethead is probably a good investment non the less.
      In regards to Phantom Power: the setting to change the voltage is a global one in the settings if I remember correctly. What you are looking for is the PFL (input specific) settings. There you have to go to the "input type" setting which by default is probably set to "Mic" for your specific input that you select. But you can change it to I think it's called "Mic + Phantom Power" or something similar.
      So basically: you have to turn on Phantom power individually for the specific input you have the mic plugged into.

    I am using the F6 in AIF mode to stream with guests. Unfortunately the USB sends all tracks back out including the computer track and the guest audio echoes. Is there a way to do a mix minus on the USB or can that only be done with line out and routing?

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 роки тому

      To do a mix minus with the USB you will have to do some routing on your computer. I have achieved this with the app Loopback by Rogue Amoeba (crsp.li/Loopback). There you can setup the Multi-Track Input of the Zoom F6 and only pull together the tracks you want to send to any given app and create a virtual device which only has the audio you want to send to your guests.
      I have a video about Loopback planed on my channel, but it's not filmed yet and will probably take another 3-4 weeks till I can publish it since I am currently traveling.

For instance, I want to record just the audio from a Zoom call either onto the Zoom F6 or run it through the F6 into a DAW.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Joshua, I think I can help you here:
      1) if you just want to run your computer audio into a DAW, then you do not need the F6. You can just use a programm called Loopback by Rogue Amoeba ( crsp.li/Loopback - it's a bit expensive but worth the money in reduced hassle) or Blackhole ( crsp.li/BlackHoleAudioDriver ).
      2) but if you still want to send audio to your Zoom F6, then I think that is actually covered at the end of this video at 21:57 . There I talk about how you can send audio to your F6 via USB and also record and map it to an input.
      If you have additional questions, please feel free to let me know.

    • @joshuaglassman7558
      @joshuaglassman7558 2 роки тому

      @@ChrisSpiegl - Thank you for the clarification. The second option is what I was asking for, now that I think of it. I'm new to all of this, so I don't want to spend too much more than I already have. Essentially, what I would like is to capture Zoom audio into its own track on the F6 and then upload the multitrack file to Audacity/GarageBand for further editing. (This is for a Podcast, by the way...)
      I've been reading about online programs like SquadCast and Zencastr, which I'm sure are great, but at a certain point you have to pay for those, and I don't want to. Plus, this way, I keep everything internal. My only question, though, is if there is only one USB port, how and why did you link two USB channels together? There's only one audio source coming from the computer, isn't there?
      I'll let you know if I have any more questions. 😁

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 роки тому

      @@joshuaglassman7558 About the 2 USB channels:
      That of course only really makes sense if you want to record either more than one signal or a stereo signal. If you just have one source coming from a remote call, then you can also go with just one channel.
      You also mentioned Zencastr and such:
      I have to say, they do have an incredible benefit over the method you are planning to do and that is the fact that they actually record the audio before it is sent over the internet.
      The thing is: whenever you use Zoom, Skype, or the like, you always end up with highly compressed audio which you will then record on the Zoom F6.
      When you use Zencastr for example, the audio is recorded (uncompressed / less compressed) in the browser of the person you are speaking with while at the same time being sent (compressed). Then while you talk, the uncompressed file is uploaded when bandwidth is available and alternatively it's finished uploading when you stop the recording.
      This way, Zencastr / Squadcast / Riverside etc. they all have a good reason for existing (and at the moment the free Zencastr plan actually provides a lot of functionality).
      I always use Zencastr for my podcast like recordings (and only use my Zoom F6 routing as a backup as well).
      Cheers.
