I don’t know this podcast but how incredible are these hosts at shutting up and letting their guest speak. Wow what a skill !! Makes for the best interview when the hosts say nothing
I grew up with Matthew and Marc and this has changed my complete view on Matthew, I wouldn't say I was ever a hater but what a man. He is what I have always seen as famous but he is just another bloke with all the issues everyone has. What an open and honest discussion showing no one is immune to the bullshit we all encounter and can overcome with minimal blowback.
Classic to hear Matthew talking about his tennis days. We were doubles partners at 13-14 years old. We were both mischievous so got on like a house on fire. We got in trouble with the tennis authorities for a number of things. Including letting of a fire extinguisher in the clubhouse at the 16 Nationals, detonating 'stink bombs' in the tuck shop, He was a fun fella to be around. Would be great to catch up again one day
@@sox7784Agreed. The issue was we unloaded on a couple of guys playing on a squash court. Matthew was faster than me, and got away. I was caught red handed and took the blame.
Most Honest Podcast I've seen in Years absolute Legend Ridgey I was in Auckland when him and Mark were at their prime Both absolute Legends and a absolute Story to tell....
Hearing Matthews genuine love for human connection was awesome. So right about society ✨ that’s why people love Aotearoa. Hope we can get back to doing that more. Matthew broke the mold by being himself and being proud of his achievements, the sometimes false humility we have as a culture can enable tall poppy syndrome and Ridgey really paved a way by bringing personality to sports making it exciting.
Excellent interview chaps. Such an easy listen. Much thanks to you all. Ridgey was such an icon for us in his prime. He still has so much more to offer. Life stories, keeping fit while aging, fatherhood etc. Truly inspirational. 😊
Fresh out of high school 2005ish, I was patrolling as a security guard around Britomart, where they had these mini volcano structures with windows on top to look down into the train station. People would use their bikes and skateboards to ride over them like ramps. Being young and full of ego, Id yell & would chase them away. One day, a guy was riding over every single one, and I went to chase him off, yelling as I did. Then I noticed who it was and yelled, "Whoa, Matthew Ridge, you're the man! Carry on mate, and go hard over every one of them. He started laughing and went over every single one. An awesome player & Fearless. The man is someone who tells his truth to help others. Respect! You’re still the man Ridgey 🫡
Great podcast. First time here. Never been a massive fan of Ridgey, but I honestly have a new respect for him after this. The interviewers are fantastic, so much less full of themselves than many of the American podcasters. Top notch guys (fellow Kiwi here from the Bay of Plenty).
Gentleman.. seriously.. one of the most sincere podcasts I’ve ever watched. Great hosting! And Mr Ridge.. thank you for sharing brother. As a Manly fan from the 80’s is an extra bonus! God bless you all 👌🏾❤️❤️🌴👊🏾🙏🏾
Ridgy is of legendary quality. I love his honesty. We had a quick beer with him on the Gold Coast maybe 2003 and I was surprised when he said he was washing cars but he never said he owned the business he just down played himself and wanted to hear what we were doing he was just super humble. I’m looking forward to bumping into him again I like him even more now
Thanks for showing the part about his meth use. My mate was on that shite, and been clean for 3 years. Ridge's story could help someone else right on the path out of it.
Matthew has had a full , deep and interesting life. So many of us the same. But really nice to know that he carries his problems and demons etc and has learned from it all. Makes me feel at ease in hearing this. Well down to Mathew for his tale and the boys for letting him tell it so easily .....
Melbourne Australia and admittedly ignorant to the world of rugby, league or union. Didn’t know of Matthew Ridge at all. This was a great listen. Thanks kindly for the share.🙏🏼
Still one of my idols today. The reason I follow Manly to the day. The life he has lived is beyond belief. Especially for someone that grew up when he did. I'm glad that he doing well now and just relaxing.
Game of two halves was legendary. Bring it back bro. You’re a legend Ridgey I was a fan when you were the backup fullback to John Gallagher And wished you had stayed, especially after he left to go play in England. Your life journey and your story is going to save many lives . Cheers mate.
Hearing his story about not trusting the police is a feeling i've developed, especially over the last few years. My dad was a lawyer, and the number of instances where he caught out cops lying to get people convicted would make your head spin.
I remember been at Opotiki College in 1995 or 94 and Matthew and Marc come to our school we played touch rugby with them it was awesome. This interview is always liked both of Matthew and Marc and this is awesome thanks for sharing because this is like we are all human what was the trauma or trigger that made you go into addiction?? This is why we will say Hi and acknowledge you because you did the tour of the country and for young teenagers to play a game of touch from a small town in NZ.
yea absolutely amazing podcast on Ridgey. We grew with him watching him do his thing. He was always that cockey guy but he was the guy that talked the talk and walked the walk. Still a great man, still a legend of sport. I remember watching his doc back in the day 'Converts' showing his transition from Rugby into League. The man was phenomenal!
Amazing podcast, thanks for your openness and honesty Matthew. First podcast I've watched of these guys. Ironic that 1 host gave up problem drimking 3 years ago, and a Liquorland sponsor in the background. TAB sponsorship as well. I am someone who helps deal with the fallout from alcohol and gambling addiction. Tears famalies apart, rent and food money gone on booze, pokies and horses, sports betting etc. Awesome podcast, but please get better sponsors. Being real not a prude. These industries make billions and do nothing about the massive social harm they cause in NZ. Much Aroha boys❤
There’s a great doco on you tube called “in a different league” narrated by All Black great John Kirwan about Matthew’s transition from union to league. It is absolutely awesome and shows his toughness to a T.
Absolute legend. Recently watched the Manly doco, was amazed by how 'himself' he already was at such a young age, and how on to it he was... at that age I didn't know my arse from my elbow.
Farrr out man. Thank you ridgy for the honesty mate, true farkn legend, just as you are when watching you be the best fullback ever playn back n the dayz. Go on son
Ridgeys a legend. Was awesome seeing him on Sports Cafe-ish. Ridgey and Macca on TV was the golden era of NZ television. Two elite athletes but funny asf aswell 😅😂
First time I have watched this podcast. I saw the title & the thumbnail and thought I'd give it a click. Great job guys. How cool is Ridgey? Subscribed.
I met Matthew Ridge at my father inlaw and mother inlaws house in Panmure. He was smoking weed 😂 Then I met him again ( wow, that was about 17 years ago) in the elevator going up to my parents apartment in the city above the float bar. He asked me to "go party?" but he looked trashed as, and nearly fell over 😂 sooo I declined.
Matty that was maybe the most honest, funny and riveting interview I’ve ever seen mate. Awesome player absolutely brilliant but you are an outstanding male role model from a father of 4. I can’t sleep listening to your interview, lol
Great show, thanks guys. I subscribe to "The Brink" - its an enlightening podcast - love Ridgey, followed him since that doco that Ric Sallizo & John Kirwan did back in the day. Good guy.
Mathew ridge WOW you are a dead set champion one of the best listenes iv ever had, how true we dont communicate no more im an Aussie and us and kiwis will always be brothers in arms but you are a dead set credit to your country mate the honesty and no political correctness is how it should be champion Mathew
Good episode Lads deep convos like his drug addiction I would have never ever thought he was on Drugs I always thought Macca was 😂😂 only because he was a Scarfie. He speaks truth on the price of healthy food
I am from the UK but i lived in Auckland for 11 years, the normal cops were ok but the high level officers had a shocking reputation. Doing a runner from a cab is not ok but what the cops did was a thousand times worse.

100% agree. Great job lads.
That was very noticeable.
Ken oath mate. The silence is deafening. Great work
Ironically he's kinda looking like a lightbulb 💡 today I bet he's still in it to he's a bit of a munter
Straight up. Great interview, too 👍 👏

Fire extinguishers were made for fun 😂😂😂

Matthew you may not see this but you really just gave me a kick up the fucking ass mate.
Appreciate your openness and honesty.
That was best Kiwi podcast Ive watched all year. Well done gents.

Wow one of the best guest pod casts I have heard. Respect to the man for being so honest and true to his word

Wow bro i see exactly where your coming from I'm 60 nek year I always find it hard to express or put it in to word, you nailed it.thanks bro
Hearing his story about not trusting the police is a feeling i've developed, especially over the last few years. My dad was a lawyer, and the number of instances where he caught out cops lying to get people convicted would make your head spin.
I've learnt to trust least who claim to be the most trustworthy.
Great Podcast.. I admire Ridgie even more after listening to his life story.
Matthew the power of these words and stories is immense, Tu Meke!
Thanks for sharing Matthew , beautiful story of your life and now you turn it around . God bless you you man
What an amazing podcast. Grew up watching and admiring this bloke and had no idea about his story.
Incredible listen!! Big respect for Matthew for telling his story and being so honest!!

My perception of Mathew has changed. Thank you for this podcast and I now look at myself for my judgmentalness
Best kiwi podcast interview I've watched hands down
What a awesome interview, much love to all involved especially Ridgey ❤
These blokes running this podcast are top shelf 👌
One of the great chats boys. Don't change Ridgey. Stay unfiltered bro. 👍🏾
He has filtered, he use to be the arrogant one, how some of us saw him back then.

I’m a Manly fan. Got into both Rugby codes in 2015. Matthew’s transition was fascinating.
There’s a great doco on you tube called “in a different league” narrated by All Black great John Kirwan about Matthew’s transition from union to league. It is absolutely awesome and shows his toughness to a T.
Best interview I've listened to in ages
I could listen to Ridgey for hours. Wish he was a usual at my local. Would have great chats.
Ridgey is a top man! Took himself to the depths and managed to bring himself back. Wish you well Ridgey💯
I went to Mt Albert Grammar with mathew, always remember him kicking the ball after school everyday
Great show dudes, open honesty from Ridgey whether it's good or bad things in the past is gold!
Started watching this and found I couldn't stop, and I'm not even that much of a sports follower. Love how Ridgey talks just like a tradie!
Great open insight. Thanks all
Such a great podcast...the best.
Awesome podcast with Matthew, a new respect for him.

Good podcast boys, awesome to hear Ridgeys story
