Man, I am really shocked by that tbh... Have a very powerful memory of playing MFS 2020 flying over mine and my father's house in the game. It was one of the last things I did with him before he passed away very suddenly with a brain tumour. It completely blew us away the level of detail then, this looks like a whole step more again. One of the first locales I'll definitely visit is my late grandparents old house in the country side where my mother was raised. It's been a while since I've been there and it has always been a special place from my childhood. I visit it in FS2020 quite often actually. The graphics may be quite ugly but the topography of the place is really spot on and sells the illusion for me. Now with all these enhancements and ability to walk around, it will look even better.

World driving sim but if you buy a new car it comes from someone’s garage sim that has it in stock and has to be delivered on someone else’s truck etc. people playing a survival sim on a deserted island - flying over an endless sea and you spot SOS in rocks. Oh yes! It's one of my most anticipated features :D In a recent interview Jorg talked about walking a trail he did in Germany as a child and how amazing it looked in the sim. This is from the official site:
Land anywhere and, for the first time in Microsoft Flight Simulator, exit your aircraft to explore 27 highly detailed biomes with hundreds of species of vegetation, dynamically created details including grass, rocks, and flowers - all influenced by seasonal changes. The all-new photometric lighting system renders the world more accurately than ever before, and enhanced weather features such as new cloud types, auroras, and other weather phenomena produce fresh and compelling atmospheric experiences.
And this is another thing Jorg said in an interview:
"You can now exit the plane, walk around, in 2024," Neumann reveals. "You can literally walk your favourite mountain path to your favourite hut in the mountains. Sit on the lake. See the sunset. It is truly a digital twin you can absorb."

Imagine the fun we could have if they can run a smoothing/leveling algorithm on the road layer so they are driveable without all the jaggies and tilt. You could drive anywhere on Earth, too. I know it's weird sounding, but I've had fun seeing what some places look like at road level. It's getting almost detailed enough now!

2020 could do this too from the start. Using a controller you slow the drone cam to 1 and rotate to 5 or so, and it was very convincing walking. Even more so with TrackIR. But this will be more refined I’m sure.

I feel like from high up in the air though, the game looks about the same. I'm still a bit skeptical though as these are hand picked screenshots to really highlight the difference. I also feel like there's some weird oversharpening on the MSFS2020 screenshots here.

the physics look a little awkward with plants and trees agitated by wind and I have to admit some of the plants look a little fake and flat if you look carefully, also it doesn't seem like plant and trees are affected by wind unless it's the wind generated by your aircraft, so most often plant and trees will look pretty static. I dearly hope the improvement in elevation resolution is also present in other regions, especiall the Alps. To this day, immersion is quickly broken while soaring in any sim, including MSFS2020, because of the ever present vertically stretched texture maps one is typically flying very close to at the same height for a long time. And I wouldn't care if it was masked by artificially created, incorrect detail, for as long as I don't have to look at the stretched stuff.

For instance, I saw a preview video flying over Stockholm, with many of the old issues. Roads look awful, 2D boats are docked under water, melted buildings, and very noticeable pop-in.

Nice to see lenticular clouds around Fuji-san and obviously, the ground textures are improved significantly. I'm more concerned with things like the AP and ATC issues being resolved, but yeah. graphis-wise, quite the improvement, particularly with regard to the increase in structure/detail for mountainous terrain (which was never believable in 2020--and now better than X-Plane 12). Still not photo-real, but it really doesn't have to be when viewed from any significant altitude.

On the "ray tracing" topic I by now heard many times that MSFS 24 will feature it across videos which is not entirely true. Sebastian Vloch mentioned at FS Expo that this ONLY applies to shadows. Well have the option to activate ray traced shadows but that's about it at least for now on release.
What we won't get on release is: ray traced lighting (the sim will have it's own global illumination system again) and also no ray traced reflections (which I would have loved to see). Path tracing I guess is out of scope entirely for this iteration.
