If you have been around the channel for a bit, you know that I have an affinity for Conifers. Evergreens play a vital role in a garden, providing year-round structure, color, and texture. Unlike deciduous plants that lose their leaves in the winter, evergreens retain their foliage, offering consistent visual interest even during the colder months. They serve as the backbone of garden design, anchoring beds, borders, and pathways with their reliable presence. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, evergreens offer practical benefits, such as acting as windbreaks, providing privacy, and creating habitats for wildlife. Their enduring nature makes them an essential component of a well-balanced and beautiful garden. I hope that this video helps you identify some new Evergreens for your garden. Wow...I loved seeing the before picture! The transformation is incredible and all of that texture and contrast is sweet perfection! Thank you for this! video. I can't grow most of these, but I love evergreens and still like to learn all about them!
I go past a hinoki cypress outside the library. It looks so soft and fluffy that I just can’t resist stopping to give it a pat. I have forever goldy. Love it.
Very nice video, as always! I really enjoy your thoughtful placement of the evergreens and Japanese maples to best set off the variety of color, shape, form, and texture. Brava!
Love seeing these evergreens, especially the wewping varieties! I don't think we can grow most of those in zone 8a, but this video is an inspiration in layering texture and color in the garden. Just lovely.❤
So beautiful thankful for sharing Steph! I have been wondering about all of your evergreens. If you have a spot in full sun I highly recommend Junipers, a moon glow would be so beautiful tucked in your landscape.
Hi Steph, Just a quick hello and Thank you for such a lovely UA-cam channel. You are a gifted gardener and your yard and gardens and beautiful, I wish you were my neighbor!
Hi Steph, instead of moving the blue spruce, can you selectively prune and thin it out by using the bows for holiday decor? It is big and bold, but quite a stunner!
such an awesome video, great tips and learning points...thank you so much for sharing these and I love how we got to see your pics from the past when the trees were just planted...really helpful for some of us who struggle with envisioning future growth etc. Feeling so inspired as I figure out which evergreens to plant around our home!
Thank you so very much for you kind words. This dress I purchased from Kohls last summer, its a LC (Lauren Conrad) dress. I love her dresses, I find them so pretty and flattering 🥰
thanks for sharing the info with us! your garden is so beautiful. love the way you have your garden put together with those beautiful colors. thanks again. hope you have a great day!!!
Hey Steph! ❤ Love these evergreens! I planted a baby dwarf alberta spruce out at my dads garden this spring and it is the cutest most whimsical little tree I’m going to decorate it for Christmas 😝
I’m also in a zone 6B climate, but in the transition zone where we get lows down to -15 and highs up to 110 in the summer (usually for weeks at a time) with no rain in the hottest part of the summer (80% of our rain falls between April & June). On top of this, we get constant winds and have lower humidity and clay soil. I’m really wanting to up my evergreen game, but having a hard time figuring out how much water things need to be happy in our climate without being a slave to the garden. Do you have any helpful learning tips for me?
I think it is important to note that evergreens do not go fully dormant in winter - and thereby the timing of planting is particularly critical to minimize the chances of winter damage - and depends on your location. The weather here in New England is becoming increasingly unpredictable - it is no longer clear to me when the best time is to plant conifers here and I do not think I am alone
Hi Emma, I have planted evergreens in Spring and in Fall. My fall planted ones appear to do better than the spring planted ones. That is correct evergreens are just that evergreen and while the growth slows down in winter, I agree they are still very much awake. Hence the color changes on their foliage etc.
@@HookedandRooted Thanks for sharing that. IMHO there are just some conifers that have a tendency to get transplant shock - like weeping Alaskan cedars that might settle in better in early spring - but I agree that early fall is likely fine for many if not most
I have a hanoki cypress by watching your channel and a couple of gold mop cypress, I don't remember the exact variety. We have deer pressure, so I have my hinoki cypress staked and wrapped with deer netting. I'm hoping once it get a little more size they'll leave it alone and I can take the netting off. I do know I'll need to use some spray deterrent. Thanks for the recommendations.
Love this video! I recently bought a fixer that needs everything in Southern California zone 10b, I love the look of arborvitaes but dont think they will work in my zone. If anyone has any recommendations? 💜
I have been scared to plant evergreen trees. Choosing the wrong one. You have inspired me to add some. I wonder if running metal mesh/chicken wire and using existing woodland trees to keep dear out. It could be stacked for added height. Omg the skeleton 💀 is awesome!
How wide is the forever goldie evergreen in your garden? I am afraid I planted mine too close to each other. The tag said 3.5’ but yours look wider? Love your videos!
Always a delight to see your beautiful garden. However, I want to know where your dresses and outfits are from, because they’re always spot on and you look beautiful as well! ❤
Thank you so very much!! I mostly shop at Target, Old Navy, and Kohls. This dress was purchased last summer and its an LC (Lauren Conrad) dress from Kohls. She has beautiful dresses that I always find flattering. 💚
Do you need to spray your eastern hemlocks for woolly adelgid? I have been reluctant to plant them because of this reason and have been holding out for the hybrids that are coming that are resistant to them. Thanks!
Hi Shirley, You can turn on the closed caption under the video and it will read the names for you. Also, I repeated the name a couple of times in each segment. Each video takes me several hours to compose and to edit. Adding name would add me even more time (on average I'm spending 10 hours per video). Thanks for understanding, and I hope this helps.

Thks.,Steph. Great comparisons & LOVE that most are deer resistant ! Does this also mean bunny resistant ? 🥴

Omg the skeleton 💀 is awesome!
This growing big blue spruce, you maybe can trim/limb it up as topiary little by little and eventually I guess it will grow over the house as topiary.
Love your garden but
Hate Halloween.
Thank you for sharing your trees and all the information. 💚🌲🌲🌲🌲
