Hi Garden Friends! In this video I share with you some really lovely shade garden perennials that I'm loving in my own garden. I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with shade plantings in this newer garden space. I hope this video serves as a "how to" select complimentary shade plants and offers you some inspiration for your own shady garden spaces. There is still lots of color and beautiful interest to be had in a shade garden. Thanks for watching - Steph🌱Gardening in Massachusetts zone 6b My Amazon Store Where You Can Find Many of My Favorite Garden Items 👉 amzn.to/49F9RTU
Hi Steph, your shade garden is looking so vibrant. I have learned so much from you. Your presentation skills are great. The videos are both clear and a joy to watch. George is a great helper.
Beautiful, amazing, and very inspirational! Love the stone, spacing, and of course the exceptional colors and textures. You are very gifted indeed! Thank you!
I place medium size rocks and broken pots around my dark plants as it helps make the plant pop against my dark brown mulch. It also brings in natural elements in the landscape.
Your garden is so very pretty. All the colors and textures are a feast for the eyes. I love huecheras, but they don't like my sandy, maybe salty soil. Every time I put one in the ground, it dies. I have two that have been in pots for years; they are beautiful! I found that bunnies like huecheras also. Thanks for sharing your beautiful spaces with us. Shout out to George,an amazing garden assistant!
Your Japanese-inspired garden’s my favorite part of your property. It’s so serene and aesthetically beautiful. And, I imagine it’s a few degrees cooler than the other gardens.
Hi Jen! He's doing so good!! Identifying plants, and even helping people with questions during my garden tour I hosted. Thank you so much, this space is turning out so beautiful and we are so happy with it 💚
Hi, Steph! You have such an eye for color and texture combos. It's like you have a big paintbrush and have created a masterpiece landscape. SO gorgeous!!!
Hi Stef 🌺. I love the different colors in your garden the hostas the heucheras and other plants they look amazing and the new plants look so pretty and you arranged them beautifully in the garden . Have a wonderful day .🌺🌻🌺
I just got home from the garden center to get mulch - but a Godzilla fern almost came home with me. I’m trying to be disciplined because it’s far too hot to be digging and planting right now, I already have a dozen sitting in the shade waiting to get in the ground!
I love your garden! It’s always so neat and put together looking. You and your husband do a great job. I started a UA-cam channel (Patty B. Gardening), but our hot, humid Mississippi summers hit a little different than yours, I think. Plus, we’re very rural with very few garden centers or plant departments at the big box stores that even have any plants available this time of year. I guess they’ve had it with the heat and humidity too.😂 But I will not allow myself to be envious of what you have. I’m proud for you, and I’m proud of what I’m able to do in my rural area! Keep up the good work!👍
You and George have created an amazingly beautiful property with all your garden areas !! That is a perfect spot for your new bleeding heart !! You two make a great team !!
Yes, he is so helpful, and talented. George helps with the hardscaping, or heavier lifting/digging and I do the planting. We are lucky to have helpful husbands in the garden💚
You are very talented with your colors, placements, and textures in your shade garden! It’s absolutely gorgeous! This video was perfect timing as I will be working in my shade to part sun garden today, and this gives me great motivation & inspiration! I know it appeared throughout the video, but what is the little chartreuse evergreen at 13:00 pictured with your drink of choice?!?! Thanks, Steph & George!🤗🌿
I don't normally comment but I just wanted to say you have become one of my favorite channels to watch. Your entire garden looks amazing. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before but you remind me so much of Drew Barrymore 🤩
Hi there! Thank you so much!! So happy you are here 💚While I don't hear it often, I have gotten that a couple of times throughout my life. I take it as a compliment, she is a beautiful person inside and out🥰
Wow, wow! I love your combinations. I live in a zone 5 and have no deer so Hosta’s are my go to for shade planting however I also add daisy’s and hydrangea for flowers. I need to add some of the plants you have shown in this video. I will just check if they are good for zone 5. I did try Lambs ear but it spread like a weed.
Steph... OH MY ! I notice that your trees and plants have grown SOOO much this year. Your Beds are spectacular. In my Bridgewater garden I also noticed the huge growth of my hostas and my old blue hydrangeas have never been so gorgeous. I owe it to all the rain we got early in spring.
Wonderful video Steph and George! The shade garden is stunning! Beautiful colors! Since most of my gardens are shade I am always excited to find new plants I don't have! I am on the search for the Hakonechloa grass now! Thank you!
Hi Stef, that's so interesting you commented on you Heldn Von Stein lambs ear sending out a single bloom stalk. That happened to my helen von stein as well and I cut that stalk down. When I first saw that blooms stalk i thought they mislabeled the plant and I was about to pull it out entirely! I noticed that the foliage on that one are a bit smaller compared to my other helen von stein too
Beautiful combinations. Because of deer I am gradually replacing my hostas with many of the plants you mentioned. I also deal with wet shade so using lots of ferns. Your garden is a show stopper, so beautiful and serene.
Stef, a suggestion 4 u of the dark Astilbe- maybe you can add a circle of white Marble chips around them about6 inches around. It's so beautiful but can't see them.
Can’t keep hosta because of deer but boy does that shade area look great. Will definitely investigate more and keep texture and color in mind. Godzilla fern? Looks great there. Inspirational video for me today. Thanks. I will plant Lambs Ear even though it’s not a favorite of mine. Looks fantastic.😊
Great timing on this video! I have a shady area where I am developing a new bed and this will be my first foray into shade gardening! Looking forward to adding some of these beautiful plants next spring. I am particularly drawn to the Japanese fern and grasses and plan to start some lady's mantle and astilbe from seed. Thank you so much!

Thanks for always sharing and inspiring us! George…just a sweet shot of the cute little garden Buddha on top of the rock at 5:06 surrounded by beautiful plants! 😊🌿 And Steph…I just had to share…I was able to find a Tutti Frutti Apricot Delight Yarrow which you had talked about a couple weeks ago. You’re right…it’s such a pretty combination of salmon & pink!!! I can’t wait to get it planted! Thanks for all you do for our gardening community and it shows…you’re almost at 75K subscribers…👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😊!
Hi! New viewer so apologies if this has been answered elsewhere before but what kind of mulch do you use? Black mulch looks best with my house but i’ve tried two different kinds and each have turned out more brown-tinted than black. Love the shade garden content also! We don’t have much full sun so it’s wonderful to get inspiration.
I have grown coral bells at another property before and loved them, but for some odd reason they just have not survived where I currently live. Is there one that comes back better than others. I miss those beautiful colors they add to a shade area 😢
Hi there! I think the blooming is very sporadic. From everyone I've talked to about it, they might send up an occasional bloom stalk. I love that mine are mostly a foliage plant. I love it so much!
Hi, Steph! Question - Will you plant the plants that are in your shade containers out into the landscape or will you overwinter them in their containers? I have some Japanese Forest Grass in containers but I'm assuming the will do better overwinter in the ground. What do you plan to do?
