The Federal Assault Ship - An Upgrade to the Vulture [Elite Dangerous Ship Review]

The Federal Assault ship is the mid-priced ship in the Dropship line from Core Dynamics - specifically designed for Federation Officers and closely specced to one of it's rivals - the Alliance Chieftain.
It's got the least number of hardpoints in the Dropship line, but are hardpoint numbers the only thing that determine the outcome of a battle? I don't think so

Out of the three, the Assault Ship is the one i hate the most to fight against. It doesn't have the DAKA of the Gunship or the... of the Drop ship, but it has the best balance of maneuverability to DPS.

Yep, that's why I like it - it's all well having lots of guns, but you need to be able to get into a position to get those guns on target over and over again

I'm still sad the Dropship is little more than a stepping stone for hazard miners, if that, as there are also better options for arguably less hassle, while being just as well protected. It's not even a good combat ship lol. It's not that it's lacking in firepower or tanking capability, it's just so dreadfully awful to fly that something like a vulture just has it's way with you as it likes. It can bite at your ankles until you keel over without you being able to even see the thing outside of your sensors. You can try all the tricks you want, the time on target will be abyssmal if it's a more maneuverable adversary. It can fare well against slow ships, so primarily traders. But it doesn't look like the type of ship you'd do piracy in. A pirate needs to be in and out before authorities catch on, with this thing you have no choice but to have protracted battles because you either can't focus on the target enough, or the fact you're still a relatively cheap medium ship with okay firepower for your size and class means you'll be wailing at tankier ships all day.
It's weird, I don't feel like it's a ship fit for... anything really. Besides some mining, or as some kind of pseudo armed trader if you somehow missed the existence of the Python if credits aren't an issue. I know people say "fly what you like", but I legitimately think it's probably the single hardest to love ships out there. Which is a bummer cause at least I wanted a bit more out of it as a multipurpose heavy duty miner instead of combat.

Weapons that roll out and telescopically extend in length are an idea that is ludicrously piled up in the game. I want to see a meme where there is a thin stick, from which the material first rolls out in width, like a roller shutter, then it unfolds in height, then telescopically extends in length - and you get a dropship

Or something that telescopes out to have a barrel the length of the ship - then when firing has a little flag that pops out simply saying "bang" 😁

The Assault Ship might be an unconventional ship for exploration, but you don't need more than 40ly jumprange and that's not too hard to do with a Assault Ship. And I think it looks really good with the icarus red paint job. Anyway, nice to see the Assault Ship getting the love it deserves

Agree you don't need more than 40ly (I stand by something I've said in a previous video or two - you can explore in pretty much anything) - but depending on the type of exploration, it's nice to have the option of longer jumps - especially if you're planning a casual exploring run on the way to somewhere like Colonia for a CG or similar.

I think the Gunship looks way better than the Dropship and Assault ships. The rear spoiler on the Gunship balances the look of it visually.

For me, the vertical vents(?) at the front kill the looks for me - plus the FAS is the sleekest looking out of the three, which is a win IMO

I have the Fed Gun Ship. It is called Bengal. Because it has all the Dhakar! All Multi-Canons with an SLF.

I have a federal dropship i use for ground attack
Loaded with advanced missile racks that thing is any infantryman's nightmare

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that - it's the best looking ship out the Dropship line, but when compared to the Courier, the Mamba and the Viper, there's no contest for me personally.

Yep - don't get me wrong, it's nowhere near it's peak in terms of player-count as far as I'm aware, but there's still enough keeping it going and it's being actively updated (probably more-so than in previous years).
That being said, I did a short for Unreal Tournament 1999 the other week, which is some 15 years older so Elite is hardly the oldest game I'm playing 😁
