I grew up in the 90s I remember seeing a Supra back then practically new and remember the feeling that car was special before I ever see it on the big screen.
The first time I seen a Mark 4 Supra was at a Toyota dealership near the Gwinnett Mall area in Duluth, GA back in the fday. If my memory is correct the MRSP was like $50k. That was a real expensive car for the average working person back in the 90's.
If a recall correctly at the time in stock trim the Supra was considered heavy and slow by the local media here in Australia. In comparisions at the time (in stock trim remember) it would not see what way an RX-7 went, could not even keep up with a much cheaper 200SX and would slowly see the 300ZX's (non turbo) taillights disparear in to distance too, all for more money than any of them - and this was not just in a staight line either, local production car racing at the time also showed it was not at the front of the pack either. If I remember too, thay when often even shown the door by the hot hatches of the time in traffic light duals on Saturday nights. Turn the boost up and it became a differing story as everone knows, but stock for stock (with the 206kW limited power in place) it was easily the worst of all the Japanese coupes at the time.
I have a couple of automotive magazines from the early 90's featuring the supra and they are very positive about the supra's stock performance and build quality. Also many car manufacturers started building more track focused cars from their existing models which toyota never did with the supra it being a gt car so seeing the supra fall back is not that surprising.
So Toyota got f'd twice by GT-R first Supra was costly and later in 2010 it's was the LFA that was overpriced while GTR which was like 80K meanwhile LFA was 300k+

Even above the Corvette and some 911’s. It was a great car. But they priced themselves out of the target market. Meanwhile, Nissan 300zx twin turbo, Mitsubishi turbo vr4 , Mazda RX7 and the American muscle cars were much more reasonably priced. If it would’ve entered the market badged as something other than a Supra, it might have had a chance. Just a few years earlier, you could buy a brand new mk3 Supra for about $5000. Let that sink in. That’s why it failed. Not because it was a bad car. Quite the contrary. It was a great car. But Supra buyers weren’t prepared to pay Porsche money. It was just a dumb move by Toyota.
Lets not forget that in the 1990s the American automakers had different types of cars. Different types of Corvettes like the ZR1s , Grand Sports, Dodge Vipers, Firebird Trans Ams with the WS6 and Firehawks, Mustangs with the GTs and Cobras , Camaros like the Z28s and SSs And along the C5 Corvette that came with the V8 LS engines This was a time when the horsepower and torque ratings of the American cars was going up . This wasn't the 80s anymore

Either like it or not the mk4 Supra was in the top 10 fastest production cars in the world back in 1993 and had the best tuning potential than any other vehicle. It's stock engine, transmission, differential and in general it's drivetrain is unmatched by any car even today with capabilities of 300%+ increase HP and still deliver with reliability. It's design and looks can be debated, not the best looking one, I would say 6/10 though with some nice aftermarket body kits can reach the 8/10, but it's interior cockpit design is 10/10 from the factory and unique even today! I like the Mitsubishi 3000gt over supra. The car created the tech that every super car uses these days for added breaking and everything. It added stability control and electronic aero and even when it was that heavy could turn better than a Porsche in most cases that and even was the car that made Porsche and do u wants ur kids to grow dreaming of Mitsubishis? Too bad the car was too heavy and it was more of a show car than an actual sports car as Mitsubishi's bread and butter was always rally
The 3000GT was heavy for HIGH SPEED STABILITY. It's not that much heavier than a 300ZX, Mk IV Supra, or R34 The 3000GT designer said, he wanted to design a car that could do everything. He wanted it to be able to drive up a mountain in a snow storm. The 3000GT is the only Japanese sports car of the era that could go off-road stock, get on the Autobahn at 155mph in a torrential downpour, and pull up to an expensive restaurant in something that looks better than a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Maserati, Lotus, while doing it for a fraction of the cost, and in more comfort.

looks like i might had been the first kid not to love supra and i am glad because it is not a good car. It is not bad but not good either
My uncle owns a MK4 supra
R34 GTR and the Supra are the 2 best cars made...
Got to say the mk4 supra is overrated
Overrated+overhated at the same time
Plus in stock form, the RZ Turbocharged Supra MK4 A80 models barely outran the C4 base(normal) stock models of the 1990s....while costing a FEW thousands more than the 1990s C4 Corvette base models
@@Orjan06only good thing about supra is its engine
What other 90s car can make 1000 horsepower on a factory engine and transmission?
@@siemorjj8081Literally that's a dumb comment. No 2JZ engine can make "1000 HP stock"
I daily drive my 97 sc300, its better than a supra because it is a supra 😉
Just like the LFA...
People who call a jza80 a mk4 supra don't know shit
How much did Fast and the Furious save the Supra?
The ae86, or the MR2 are more exciting to me then the Supra.
Let's not forget the 1990s Eclipse especially the top-performance variant
@@crowderbanks636 I like cars I can whip around corners and fast. One I don’t live in a place with a lot of straight always and two anything over like 90 is a ticket waiting to happen so I’d never get to see the Supra to its full potential very often.
@@Mr.Plant1994 Yeah. If you watch period 1990s of Best Motoring films, with the Supra A80 included , it didn't do much better around corners as the other vehicles
For me it’s the ST205 or ST185 Celica. I just like them better.
And the supar is and will the goat the king the legend.and u cnt blow up the engine
Supra mark 4 was over engineered able to handle plenty of hp.
One of the best car Toyota ever make
Supraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Imagine if they maintain the 2jZ ? they could have sold millions of Supra.
Why? They could have upgraded the power year after year until the block can't hold anymore.
Say 2020, the power is 350hp, then 2021 400hp, then 2022 450hp, 2023 500hp, 2024 600hp ALL THE WAY TO 2,000HP hahahahahaha 😅😅😅😅
It's the 2jz motor that was best ever made
Yeah I still want one lol
The Price what's stop people!
The Supra wasn't really priced high, it was quite cheap compared to it's intended western GT car targets. The problem was that Toyota underestimated how much car racism would affect export sales, as not many Aston Martin or Ferrari buyers wanted to own a Toyota even if it was a better car. Sad to say that if they had badged it as a Lexus LC outside of Japan it would have sold significantly higher.
It's not that much heavier than a 300ZX, Mk IV Supra, or R34
The 3000GT designer said, he wanted to design a car that could do everything.
@@dct124 it also had 4 seats too if I remember correctly.not spacious but can seat 4 ordinary sized people. It's basically the blue blueprint of a modern supercar. Sadly all people know is the supra hype. Sadge. My brother and I love supra from NFS most wanted and we like the car too but we're not brain dead
@@maddog_majima9553 The rear seats were made to lower car insurance. Granted you could fit a child, child seat and small adults. I used mine for storage and groceries. The closest new car that comes to a 3000GT is the Ferrari 812.
@@maddog_majima9553 most people saw the Supra as the hero car in Fast and Furious. Peak Ricer era. The 3000GT died in 2Fast2Furious when they brought out that hideous body kit. They just needed a stock Gen 1 with maybe lowering springs.
And the supar is the legend,no one talks abt the car u talking abt..
WHAT DO TEENAGE BOYS KNOW ABOUT LIFE? Huh????
Wow
The supra
The LFA
Toyota can really make the best ever cars but always somehow drop the ball… sports cars are just not in the toyota dna
However the new corrolla and yaris gr might just change the game
I don't buy that......MK5 A90/J29 is doing well compared to the MK4 A80 Supra (and has already had people rack up 800hp or more on the Supra Mk5's Stock Bottom End on its B58 series inline 6 engines).
And the MK3 A70 Supra sold better compared to the MK4 A80 Supra. Plus the Lexus SC Coupes (which where the Supra came from) sold better to the MK4 A80 Supra
Yes but you’re comparing toyota to toyota, the lfa was a flop. The mk4 supra was a flop and the mk5 supra isnt doing anywhere near aswell as its competition. The mk5 was specifically made for supra fans but they dropped the ball again by using a bmw engine. The mk5 is a worse; uglier looking version of the m2 coupe
@@aqibfreed4672 Like I already said in the comments, the MK5 A90/J29 has clearly been doing well in sales COMPARED to the MK4 A80 Supra.
And also Toyota made the right decision to have a Inline 6 from a different manufacturer/automaker. Which literally Toyota making a new inline 6 from scratch would've been expensive and made the pricetag high on the car.
So how TF "Toyota dropped the ball again"?????
And you sayin' that the "MK5 is uglier"???? I can tell you literally dont know for the fact that the MK4 A80 Supra was well-liked by most during the 1990s. And was bad-mouthed as well
@@aqibfreed4672 "MK5 isn't doi g anywhere near as well as it's competition".
That's a damn lie cause folks are actually preferring the MK5 A90/J29 over the Nissan 400Z. Which that doesn't fit your made-up narrative
I meant its german compeition. The car shares the same engine as bmw, the bmw costs more. Yet the bmw is still more desirable. The mk5 isa. Flop because the people it was designed for themselves do not like it.
The new 400z is also a failure with the majority of 350/370z lovers.
People be like omg the mkiv is best supra. No one wants to admit the mkv is the better Supra.

Supra mkv still better than mkiv tho
@@Baer9471 I really like the aggressive styling on the MKV more than MKIV's 3rd gen Ford Taurus looking ahh smooth design.

I was never impressed with the Mk4. To me it's s formless blob of metal with ZERO character. To be fair, that was kind of the style of a lot of cars in the 90's.
Best looking no way
Toyotable soupbruh is so overrated
And folks who didn't live through the 1990s(especially not born in the 1980s) , fail to realize that the MK4 A80 Supra (Fourth Generation) faced criticism as well. Like looking like a "value brand front engine Ferrari" and not having the pop-up headlights like the MK3 A70 Supra (3rd Generation. And that is literally the best selling Supra to this day. Not the MK4 A80 Supra which is literally based on the Lexus SC400/300)
