  • This would be the 2nd time that our now 8 year old dryer has lost its heating element, each one lasts about 4 years. This time we filmed its replacement, this is totally something anyone can do if you can handle a screw driver, which is just about the only tool you'll need. Parts are cheap and online, just make sure to match your model number with the part you are ordering.

    I viewed the video & felt I could replace the heading elements. I ordered the part $26 & followed the video. It was a success. I big thank you as I know someone would have changed me much more than $26 to replace it.

      Totally. Dryers aren’t complicated and a lot of folks can do it themselves with a bit of guidance. Good for you!

    For my unfortunate friends that have the black version of this dryer (DVE50R5400V/A3 in my case), there are 2 additional screws behind the metal stand holding up the element. They are very difficult to get to from the front side. If you have an Allen wrench with a built-in Phillips head that will save you a lot of time. I lost mine, so I'm currently using a Phillips bit and tiny vice grips. Wish me luck!
    Edit: Just those 2 screws turned a 30 minute disassembly into an hour. However, im finally done, and I wouldn't have been able to do it without this very helpful video!
    One last thing, if you do have my model dryer, wait to take off ALL of the wires until after you have the new element and new fuses, as it's much easier to replace all of the components one wire and one piece at a time. The only wire that you have to disconnect to remove the element is the red wire above the blue wire that feeds directly into the top plug. After its removed, the element slides right out and you can set it on the floor directly in front of the dryer.

      Very true to have all the parts you plan on changing available. I changed the heater element once and looked around, found the tensioner was toast for the belt...so ordered more parts...at least I didn't have to take the heater out again.

    I was happy w your video because I didn’t have to remove the drum. I will say that if your going to do it this way you will be laying on the floor a bit. I had no problem w this. If you turn the element hard to the right you can re install the base that goes under the element when your reinstalling the new unit. That’s was the tightest spot in this job. There is two screws on the back of the mount below the element (in the back of the mount ) the two on the front are easy to get too. To clarify I didn’t have little feet like this one. Mine mounted to the floor with two screws. But it was mostly the same. Thanks

    So thanks for the video. Very helpful. I would suggest that instead of saying that you don't even have to move it away from the wall if you just lift the front up. You should be sure to UNPLUG the dryer no matter which method you use. Thanks again

      Very true. Our dryer has the outlet to the side, so its kinda in your face and we don't have to move our particular dryer, you are right, some folks may need to...or at least trip the breaker for the dryer which isn't 100% but is better than nothing and doesn't require too much moving things around.

    I tried this disassembly method the first time I took the dryer apart. Mine has one screw on the back of that slot you talked about that you have to unscrew totally blind with a stubby screwdriver. I saw another video where he took the drum out, so I tried that instead. After my original apprehension, I took out the drum. I recommend it, and the pulley system is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. The benefit is that you have TONS of room to play with inside the dryer.
    Also, mine has three spade connectors instead of two. One red, one white, and one blue (very patriotic). I essentially had to guess which went where when I did mine the first time.

    • @RedBarnHomestead
      @RedBarnHomestead  10 днів тому +1

      Yeah, variations from model to model have been found, some have extra screws, some do not. Not sure on the 3 spades though. Those elements are 220 volts and should only need 2.

    Amazing reference video. This was nearly identical to the unit I owned and worked perfect to resolve the issues. More importantly, it helped me understand the internals of the dryer a little better so that an easier fix could be implemented in the future. I truly believe it was a clog based on what I pulled out and cleaned up, but figured I would change the element anyway since I was in there.

      It is one of the easier harder things to do on your dryer. Swapping out the drive belt...that gets long, but this, depending on model, can be fairly easy to do. Some folks have 2 extra screws that are hard to reach...they are just screws, but awkward and don't need to be replaced.

    Note: My dryer was a newer or order version of the same model. I had 2 screws in the back, not the feet of the litt stand that hold it up. After wiggling for a while I felt around and found the two screws. I was able to get them, even with my arthritis, by coming in with a stubby Philips from the right hand side. Maybe make this a top comment so that other people see it.

I was pretty careful to attach the blue and red the way they were on the old / bad element. But I just switched them and tried again and still tripping. They key is the heater element can’t touch anything but the ceramic insulators, not for heat, but for electricity. Double check that the element is not touching anything. Otherwise, it’s something else.

      @@RedBarnHomestead Thank you. So since I tried it three times and since we need to use the dryer, I called someone and they came out and he took everything apart including removing the drum etc. He said everything looked fine but one of the connections from the element was not connected (but they were when I tried it last night). Anyway he said he saw no burned wires etc and it looked ok and he put it back together (but messed up the top a little trying to get it back together which I didn’t understand since I did it fine). It started and ran for 3 seconds and tripped. His judgment is that the breaker is bad. And they don’t do those. So a friend removed the breaker just now and told me how to put a new one in. So I will go buy one tomorrow and hopefully that will fix it. If not, I will be calling that company again but out dryer has been out since basically Tuesday evening. Thank you again for your comment and for your video in the first place.

      It has bent steel tabs you need to unbend a bit to get them out of their slots.

    Should there be a gap on the bottom when you put the heating element back in place?

    • @RedBarnHomestead
      @RedBarnHomestead  6 місяців тому

      The heat element should only touch the sides of the box it lives in, if that's your question.

    Is there a “burn in” for the new heating element or is it good to go right after install?

      Double check that all your connections are good. Also make sure there are not breaks in the heating element itself. You can temp. fix them by connecting them together with a crimp, but make sure the path of electricity is clear. You may need an ohm meter (common on most volt meters) to check the other heater things.

    Hi there, up in Canada myself - for reference, what's the heating element/part # you ordered? I'll of course go by my model number but would be good to know. Thanks!

      Yes, it can be smelly for a few starts. More than that maybe have a look and see what’s going on.
