Might be a dumb question- but is the gasket necessary/dire in all overflow drain set-ups? My tub hasnt had one since ive owned my home, and now im paranoid lol
do you know what that u shaped metal plate it that was not replaced in the video that was screwed in below the bracket for the overflow faceplate, mine it completely rusted and I have been trying to figure out what it is so I can replace mine
That is not a U-shaped metal plate, that's the front of the actual vent pipe that connects to the back of the tub vent hole. So if that is disinterested, you will likely need a new tub overflow pipe kit similar to this one from Home Depot: www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-Twist-and-Close-1-1-2-in-Sch-40-White-PVC-Pipe-Bath-Waste-and-Overflow-Tub-Drain-in-Chrome-WO-3-CR-TC/206393883 the only problem is now you'll have to be able to get at it from back side of that wall, maybe it's in a closet on the other side or a bedroom on the other side?
Hey what type of screwdriver 🪛 did you used to tighten the new overflow cover? My existing one has that same type screw, but I cannot find anything compatible with it
my tub is a old one with a knob in the middle to operate the shower water and tub water but some how the water don't shut off completely when I'm using the shower it running from both end . how can I fix that ?
What happens if the plate got rusted and when i pulled it out the screw broke? My tub flow is slow it's like it's plugged. Does the plate have anything to do with that?
I didn't see you finish it up with silicone or caulk? ALso how do I find the other videos of the other part of the bathroom you did on this job? I cant find the spout or shower install. TY

Hey thanks for the video this was good I have a quick question do you have any recommendations for a screw that will not unscrew on the old cover plate. I am helping my friend to install a new plate but we can’t get the old plate off because of the stuck screw. Any help would be great. Thank you!!!
Dezmond, for a stuck screw, which I assume is stripped, you need to use the Speed Out bits, they attach to your drill. The kit is sold at Home Depot. Follow the directions closely, one side is a reverse drill bit, the other side of the bit is the extractor. Used it a number of times both in the shower and on bedroom door screws that did not want to come off. www.homedepot.com/p/Ontel-Speed-Out-Speed-Out-Titanium-Screw-Extractor-4-Piece-1000367/303667297
Just installed a new tub...instead of putting in my single screw drain cover, my boyfriend bought a double screw cover that is chrome.. I have 2 questions 1) where can I get the adapter? My kit did not come with the overflow plumbing or any other hardware, and 2) will I need access to the plumbing as I already hung drywall and closed the wall. ( direct access from the basement but it is VERY tight). Thanks!
I usually buy the overflow kit that has only one screw hole in it. It comes with an adapter bracket that screws into the older 2 holes if you have one, or you just use the one screw into the center hold to secure it.
Is the over flow cover supposed to turn after you tighten it . I screw it on tight and i can still turn it some what . Mine is different tho I put the 1 screw threw the overflow cover and it has a spot to screw it in on the drain pipe .
The cover should be horizontally level with the opening at the bottom. The screw should be tight enough to hold it snug. I also like to apply a real thin bead of clear silicon all around the top of the cover where it meets the tub to prevent any water from getting inside the opening other than into the drain.
Yeah not putting in Sheetrock until tonight I still don’t got the ceiling back in I’m gonna fill the tub up with water and try it out . I’m almost certain that the bolt was just loose if not I’ll replace the gasket
Where did the holes for the new bracket above the old bracket come from? Also the u shaped lower bracket is missing from mine, I need to replace this correct? my other problem is the bar with one hole is too long for the opening in the tub. Can I buy a proper fitting plate?
Unfortunately I found the rusted studs from the original cover. I don"t see any way to remove them. So after I find the u shaped bracket and replace it can I just silicone the chrome cover over the hole?
The kit comes with a new bracket. the bracket comes with 2 screws to adapt it to the threaded pipe opening inside the tub wall, If it is too long for yours, you can use a Dremmel tool to cut it down, but make sure the holes still line up.
I only use silicone, no caulk for bathrooms. The have one that specifically says sinks and tubs: GE GE5040 Advanced Silicone 2 Kitchen & Bath Sealant Caulk, 10.1oz, amzn.to/2Xa8MR8 Clear color, you can also get white too.
the fitting is usually plastic right? Double check yours it might be threads in a plastic screw boss. If that is the case the new screw will go right in there. If not you might have to just silicone the new overflow plate onto the tub, and insert a dummy screw there.
I have a similar type plate but i need to remove it to unclog the drain but the singe middle screw isn't budging. It's like really really stuck. The screw is in good condition only about 5 years old but that sucker is not moving at all. Any ideas on how to remove it? I'm bout to go HAM on it. 😂
Can I change out an overflow plate that has a lift tab with just an overflow plate without the lift tab and then install a stopper drain cover instead of the plain drain in the tub? The lift tab broke off of the overflow plate and I am having a hard time finding parts and have no idea how to replace it if I got the parts. Thank you, trying to repair 1994 kohler parts in my tub. Where can you purchase the Delta shower head that you used in your repair video? Have a great day!
The overflow plate kits do not come with a gasket. If it aint broke don't fix it you could run the risk of buying a gasket and then putting it on that old 50 year old overflow tube there and what if something happens and it doesn't match up exactly right like the original 1 did? So I would only change the gasket if it looked like it was bad. Don't mess with what's working.

Very helpful, thanks. I just replaced my ancient tub spouts -- these suckers are next!

Filled my tub way too high today. Glad this was there

What if theres nothing to attach to... just an empty pipe.. how would I pull it in so the gasket is sealed to the tub and attach an overflow cover?

I apply clear silicone from 8 o'clock position to 4 o'clock position around the top
I can’t get the new screw to go all the way in to hold the plate. It stops right where the paint is on the threads. Any tips on what to do?
