    Not a pro track athlete obviously, but is it possible to go from a bad/subpar starter to good to excellent starter in track???? From the looks of it it seems that you're either born one or not. It's obviously Lyle's Achilles heel and I'm sure he's spent a LOT of time on it.

      I think yes and no. The start is a learned skill. Some people have bodies better suited to starting so they may have the edge, but you can see a guy like noah lyles has been able to improve his starting skills immensely.

      @Christian-se5si He's improved yes, but he's still playing catch up in the latter stages of a 100m race and sometimes runs out of real estate to reel in the leaders. He obviously has elite top end speed and sprint endurance if his start was on the same level he'd hardly ever lose in the 100 as well.

      Yes, it's very possible to go from a poorer starter to a good starter:
      If we look at short-term, Usain Bolt is probably the best example. He's what we call an "inconsistent starter," where there are times Bolt gets out of the blocks really well, but most times he falls asleep. You rarely see Usain Bolt start well in the regular season, but between 2008-2012 olympics and world championships he was starter just about better than anyone else (with the exception of Richard Thompson in the 2008 Olympic final and Gatlin in the 2012 Olympic final). He split 3.78, 3.78, and 3.79 at 30m in the 2008 2009 and 2012 finals.
      If we look at long-term, Justin Gatlin is a good example. Before the 2006 ban, he was an average starter, he got out either with the pack or very slightly ahead. But since 2012, Gatlin became one the best and most consistent starters, splitting 3.7X at 30m countless times.
      Lyles is clearly improving his start. He has pr'ed in the 60m by 0.08 this indoor season. In his 2 most recent races (USATF Bermuda Grand Prix 100m and the Atlanta City Games straight 150m), he's actually staying with everyone not just at 30m, but at 10m and 20m (i.e. throughout the entire 30m zone) we'll see how he does the rest of this season.

    Luv this show!
    Request: can you guys discuss the Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone "situation"? She smoked Abby Steiner and Gabby Thomas, and Shericka Jackson looked sluggish in her season opener... so, why doesn't she consider a 200m-400m double instead of "another" 400mH gold? She has nothing to prove in the 400mH and has no real competition except for Femke Bol, so if she got in the 200m and 400m mix THAT would be interesting!

      I thought the same thing. But she may be trying to make the 400mH world record even more unreachable. I’m sure she can run it sub-50 soon.

      @@TonyCraddockJr records will always get broken... her legacy would be even more impressive if she moved to other events and dominated there too. No woman has done the 200m-400m double since Marie-José Pérec at the Atlanta Olympics.

      With Bol’s massive improvements over the last year she may be using that as competition for a push. I think she was always set on the 4. She’s transitioning to 2 for speed training. Noah has def seen success in his 2 after working on his 1. I’m wondering if that’s the goal here.

    • @robws007
      @robws007 Місяць тому

      @@dalilkwickone14 sure, but Noah Lyles doesn't run the 100 as speed training for the 200, he wants to win at 100 as well! Sydney McLaughlin is a conundrum and (not to play amateur psychologist) I wonder if there isn't an element of perfectionism that prevents her from committing to other distances... like, if she can't be the GOAT she won't do it? As for her defaulting to "God has a plan" whenever she's pressed in interviews... well, God has a plan for Femke Bol and Gabby Thomas too, and they can't all win LOL.
