    I work in the oil and gas as a rig welder off shore. The test is on 6g test. 6010 root and hot pass. 1/8 7018 fill and cap. The key is to let the pipe cool down before capping. On my root pass I will use a nickel landing with a 3/32 gap and run 6010 5p plus and watch the key hole. With the 7018 I alway point the rod to the center of pipe and hold the walls on each side for a second

    I like it when you said that you don't have it all figured out! I have been welding for nearly 45 years. Somedays I feel I have only scratched the surface of things I could know. These days he bigger challenge for me now that I am near 60 is my eyesight, you just don't have the range of focus you do when you are young, thus I have to figure ways to work around that.
    Most of my welding work over the years has been structural and repair work. I can confidently say I have mastered vertical and overhead 7018. Oddly enough horizontal groove joints give me fits. Mostly because in all those years for some reason in my work they don't often seem to apply. Luck of the draw I guess. Anyway Austin I like your style of presentation and well thought out explanations. I am always trying to better myself especially when fitting and welding pipe, your videos are inspiring and a big help. Cheers and thank you for taking the time to do these videos.

    When I learned welding in the army. Our final project was to weld on a 4" wrought pipe. We started on the bottom, did uphill, moved the pipe to be to do flat and went down the other side, ending with overhead on the bottom again. Not difficult but was a challenge for the newby welder.

    I have the same problems you have on not getting the toes filled out I guess is how to say it
    I am working on building a trailer from an old camper is my latest project and the advise you got from the guy you were working with is what I ended up doing to fill out my toes. Push the rod in and pause for the right amount of time to let the puddle fill things out.
    I learn alittle more every time I weld

    For your 7018 3/32 pre cap I like to carry a diablo sawzall blade just in case I do get any material stuck in the toe , not as aggressive as a grinder and more fine tuned but eats the grit fast at the toes. Also if you come out a little wider in your weave , swirl or hook you do on the sides a little more you are less likely to have slag inclusions

    Set your heat at about 80-85 amps, 3/32” land and gap, gotta step it, open that key hole up and come back into it, stack some dimes in there, also don’t grind into your land and with 7018 it can’t push out and burn out slag as well as 6010 so keep your rod angle towards the center of the pipe if not just a little bit angled back to help it burn out any trash. Hope this helps, this coming from an uphill welder whose just recently started to learn and got certified on downhill so I know the struggles of reversing what your used to.

    When you are welding up hill you have to start with lower amperage because when you are welding everything heats up to where you need it. I usually weld at 110-115 up hill depending on thickness.

    On a uphill root pass, try a 1/16th of a gap, don't use a grinding wheel on root pass, use a thin speedy cut disc, wherever your rootpass doesn't come thru properly, cut straight down through rootpass with disc, then weld again, the speedy cut disc will put a new facing on the bevel, you will see the wisdom of this advice that i wish i would have known 42 years ago.

      With a 1/16" gap, what size land do you use with it, Sir ? And what amps do you run for different pipe schedules and do you drag or whip or some other technique? I am currently a lone welding student in my garage and my instructor is youtube and the internet but the learning process is painful slow. I only get to do maybe a couple pipes a month.

    In welding school on groove weld, was hard with the 7018 to get those toes wet in on the edge. I'd have a small screwdriver ground down to a fine point to get that unburnt slag or flux out. Pausing helped at the toes. But I don't have nearly the experience of some.

    At 3:28 when you started your bead it did not sound like it went in . I have always used sound as well as sight to run the bead in . I knowing there was no penetration would stop immediately and grind it out I used only cotton as ear plugs because you could hear better . Some young broncs would laugh at that until the x-ray would call them out on lack of penetration . all I'd say then was so a listening repair eh . You didn't listen to me and you didn't listen when you were welding . Oh well . In the last 20 years of me welding career it was doing tie ins. Some of the fitups were god awful by circumstance . You needed to know as many welding tricks as possible to stay on top of any repairs.

    For the gap you are using, is it 1/8"? I just went to a chapter in NCCER and it stated that the maximum is 1/8" and if it's greater than that, you can have deep penetration where we saw in the beginning of the video. I get that it was a few months ago, but I don't know if that's something you measure every time you do it. Oh, the book also stated that the groove can also be 70°, 37.5° on either side for piping.
    I love watching your videos. Giving tips and taking tips. I wanna strive to be like that. Constructive criticism. I'm just a student and just barely on my end of my second month of school of a total 10 month course.

    • @arosswelding
      @arosswelding  Рік тому

      Lol it’s a habit from welding on pipeline work. On pipeline jobs now days it’s a big no no to arc outside the bevel. So if you try to start a rod several times and it keeps sticking the end of the rod eventually, or inevitably gets all the flux, knocked off the end, and it makes it harder for the rod to start, therefore taking a risk of arcing outside the bevel so we just throw the rod away. Also starting with a fresh rod lessens, the possibility of getting porosity in your starts. All that to say, in the pipeline world, it is priority to make a clean weld that will pass x-ray over, maximizing the amount of welding rod we burn.

    • @chuckmiller5763
      @chuckmiller5763 Рік тому +1

      The cost of rod is not a drop in the bucket on a pipeline. Bring those 1/2 burnt rods home for the kids to practice with.
