Thanks for watching!
I loved the acceptance speech! 😂😂😂 I’ll probably prioritize Return to Edan over Beowulf in Old English 😂. I knew we shared our favorite book of the year, and it was wonderful to see it claim its rightful award. 🏆
Haha, yes, Return to Edan might be the only book Philip would want you to read before Beowulf haha.
@@RedFuryBooks I read Beowulf twice, and the second time was inspired by Philip! I just don't see myself learning Old English! 😂 I'm looking forward to Return to Edan!
Yours are my favourite year end awards Josh, I think your format is perfect, the tone is perfect, and the way you present the nominees and winners is also perfect. You clearly had a phenomenal reading year in '23, so I hope that your 2024 is at least as good.
Thank you, Derri, I appreciate that! Especially as it seems there were A LOT of book tubers doing the awards show thing this year!
Great video! I need to read all 6 books from book of the year category. Phillip’s guest appearance was exceptional! So entertaining. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! And I definitely recommend my 6 finalists for book of the year - several are quite different but they're all masterful.
It's nice to see Raymond E Feist getting some air time. He really needs more mentions on booktube.
I'm also glad that you've discovered GGK in 2023, he really is an excellent author.
Yes, I feel because UA-cam is a younger platform, a lot of the newer generation of fantasy readers don't read anything pre-Wheel of Time. And there's so much good to explore like Feist!
Thank you so much for including Ark of Ascension! And a very well-deserved win for Philip Chase!
Congrats on the "nomination!" :).
Philip trying to steal the show! Brilliant awards ceremony, way better than the Oscars if you ask me. Very much looking forward to reading Hyperion now!
Ed
Furies>Oscars works for me! :)
We need the extended cut of Philip’s full acceptance speech!
And yay for Hyperion!
Haha, yeah, some Philip bloopers!
"Read Beowulf. In Old English." - Excellent. Love the Furies!! fiiiine, I'll start Endymion....
Awesome, I hope you enjoy Endymion! And after your TBR challenge, you need to read a book that I actually like LMAO
This was well worth the wait!! I love that you found so many new favourite authors and series last year. Also, that acceptance speech was 100% the highlight of my day 🤣🤣
Great show, Josh!
Thanks, Esmay! Glad you liked the video and glad Philip took part in the fun!
LOVED the acceptance speech!!!! Great show, as always 🙂
Yes, I'm glad Philip was able to join in the festivities!
This was so much fun! What a great production!
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it!
What a great idea. That was fun, and informative as well. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Philip. Lol. I loved the Edan trilogy. I didn't finish Return until January though so it couldn't be on my 2023 series favorites.
I think the authors I've read most last year have to be Joe Abercrombie and James SA Corey. Favorite new (to me) author is Joe Abercrombie. I didn't do many rereads last year, but that has to go to New Spring by Robert Jordan. Favorite self-pub goes to Blood Reunion by JCM Berne and also Way of Edan by Philip Chase. I didn't read any nonfiction that deserve an award. I think my book of the year is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Series of the year is to The Expanse.
It sounds like you had a fantastic year as well! I don't think I get to The Expanse this year, but I can hope!
Huzzah for the «Edan» Trilogy, GGK and «A Song for Arbonne! 🤩🥳
My Top Favorite Read of 2023, is a tie between «Under Heaven» by Guy Gavriel Kay & «The Veiled Throne» («Dandelion Dynasty #3) by Ken Liu: «Under Heaven» should be teached next to «War & Peace» and «Le Miserables» for GGK’s prose and Ken Liu’s Character Work has few if any rivals! A character that has only one scene in «TVT» (though a series veteran in «The Dandelion Dynasty»), earned with that scene alone my favorite character of 2023: Cogo Yelu!
Next is another tie between «The Retreat to Avalon» by Sean Poage & «The Winter King» by Bernard Cornwell: Poage has written my favorite take on «A Historical King Arthur» and the Seige of Yves Trebon/St. Michel in «TWK» shows why Cornwell might be the best at writing battles!
The next are unsorted:
«The Winter Road» by Adrian Selby
«The Way of Edan» by Philip Chase (You might have heard about him! 😄)
«Bold Ascension» by Vaughn Roycroft
«Salammbo» by Gustave Flaubert
«The Farthest Shore» by Ursula K. Le Guin
«The Name of the Wind» by Patrick Rothfuss
«Brigantia» by Adrian Goldsworthy
«Tortilla Flat» by John Steinbeck
«The Little Emperors» by Alfred Duggan
My Honorable Mentions
«Tehanu» by Ursula K. Le Guin
«Speaking Bones» by Ken Liu
«River of Stars» by Guy Gavriel Kay
«The Conscience of the King» by Alfred Duggan
«The Black Gods Kiss» (Jirel of Joiry) by CL Moore
«In the Grip of the Minotaur» by Farnham Bishop & Arthur G. Brodeur
You are 100% correct about Cornwell's battle sequences - no one does it better! As it appears you are making your way through the Earthsea books, don't skip the short stories. The short story collection was one of my favorites as it has a tremendous amount of world-building that I enjoyed.
@@RedFuryBooks I have the gloriously illustrated Earthsea Omnibus, so I will indeed check them out!

Loved these awards and can’t wait to try Edan and GGK with Song for Arbonne soon!
Woo-hoo! I hope you love them both!
Anyone up for a Beowulf read along? My deepest thanks, Josh!
Hi Philip from Ireland, I'm sure you've been asked this constantly but any news on the audio books of your novels. Really looking forward to devouring all three. Thanks Will
Thanks again for joining this video! And we'll see if we get some Beowulf fans in the comments haha
@@highburyful Allen is hard at work on the audiobook for The Way of Edan. I am hopeful for some solid news I can deliver in February, but I can say now that I think March will be the earliest possible month for the release. I'll announce it as soon as I know more. Cheers!
Release the director cut of the 4 hour long Phillip speech!
@@jakebishop7822 It’s totally worth the watch!
And it’s amazing that Feist is getting some love - been reading him since magician was first published and he’s a favorite of mine and he hardly ever gets talked about (which is almost criminal)
Yes, I agree that Feist and a lotto the classic authors from the '80's aren't talked about enough. A product of UA-cam being a younger platform I think.
Wow..book of the year was a surprise…I have not read anything by GGK so I will have to add some of his books to my TBR…I love the format of the awards and that was a great acceptance speech…Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for checking out the video and glad you enjoyed it! Yes, add GGK to your TBR :)
Superb! Thanks Red for inspiring me to read more.
Thanks so much and glad to hear I've had a part in someone wanting to read more books!
Quail to vellum...😂
I look forward to these awards. 🎉🎉
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Love it! Great reading year. ❤
Thank you!
Great award video! GGK and Hyperion are on my TBR. Priceless acceptance speech 😂
Thanks for checking out the video and hope you love GGK as much as I do! And Philip was great!
This was refreshing. You’re the first booktuber I’ve seen that didn’t rate Lonesome Dove above everything. GGK is definitely on my radar now.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Lonesome Dove, but I just connected with A Song for Arbonne in a deeper way. I hope you enjoy GGK!
Great video! No surprise to see GGK appearing (and winning) several times here.
The last two years of award shows it had been Hobb, but this year GGK wins the day!
Great to see the awards Josh!
Thanks, Andrea!
I love watching your end of year awards. Lonesome Dove is a hell of a book, amazed it was beaten. I'll certainly be looking out for A Song for Arbonne if it can top that!
(By the way funny audio mistake at the beginning! 😊)
Glad you like the awards! And yes, Lonesome Dove is a hell of a book, but A Song for Arbonne just edged it out. Honestly both are strong top 10 of all time contenders for me.
Gonna start Song for Arbonne early February. You have me chomping at the bit!
YES!!!! Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
And the award for video of the year in the top lists category goes to....Red Fury Books for the 3rd Annual Fury Book Awards!!!!
Thanks so much! It took a lot of time but was fun putting this video together!
Josh so many great reads! I was happy to see Magician win an award. I discovered your channel when trying to find some content for it.
I am hoping in 2024 your nominees for new favorite authors will be Gywnne, Buehlman & Tad Williams🤞.
Light Spoiler alert for Boys Life & Hyperion:
Whenever there is a reference to one of those old B schlock movies, I think of how poignant that movie/aliens storyline was in Boys Life, so well done! Then there is the Merlin sickness storyline in Hyperion, thinking of what that father lives through! It can just break the brain thinking about it now. So brilliant!!
Thanks, Heidi! And I agree wholeheartedly with that storyline in Boys Life!
I’m due for a reread of Magician as well. Very cool to see lots of GGK here, can’t wait to dive in
I think GGK is far underrated in our circles!
Good one. I've read a lot of those books. I predict Tigana will be in the running for book of the year when you get around to reading it.
Thanks! Tigana's on tap for me in April!
Bahaha the acceptance speech. 😂 I love it.
Haha Philip stole the show!
I just finished watching this Josh and I love seeing the GGK love. I have read 6 of his novels and truly believe he is one of the best writers we have working today. I have not read Song of Arbonne yet but I will definitely get to it. If you ever get a chance to read Children of Earth & Sky, I would like to be a part of that discussion. That is my favorite Kay novel and I plan to reread it in 2024. Good job on the awards show. You have a lot of good books mentioned and I just looked up Angel From The Rust by Jason Link. That looks intriguing.
Thanks, Marion! I'll eventually read everything by GGK, so I'm sure I'll get to Children of Earth and Sky at some point. I have Tigana and the Sarantine Mosaic as the next priorities.
Wow The GGK is strong with this one 😲
Indeed! Hobb has dominated the last two award shows, so it was time for someone new to step up!
High praise for GGK. I will have to pay more attention to his books.
I hope you enjoy his work as much as I have!
Love this! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Not sure which Guy Gabriel Kay’s books you’ve read but the Lions of Al-Rassan is the best book by him, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise 😊
Never mind, I should’ve finished listening 🤦🏼♀️
Haha, I won't begrudge that you liked Lions the best! :).
Michael moorcock wrote the lyrics to the song “black blade” with Eric bloom of blue oyster cult. It is taken from the Elric books. Great song.
Ooooh, heading to look for that now! (This was a timely comment as I just finished Stormbringer a few nights ago and LOVED it). Thanks!
Hobb doing great last year, GGK this year, these award shows are approved by me
Haha yessir!
That was fun and really creative!!! ❤❤❤
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it!
This is what booktube is all about
Thanks - this was fun to do!
Great awards.
I have a few of Moorcock's books that I need to get to.
Gemmel is a Legend. I need to finish his bibliography.
I would have gone Feist as I think he is more prolific and overall influences the genre more.
Hard to argue Magician. If it was written today, it would be a 5-book series.
Self-Pub I have not really got into. But next year it is hopefully is more on my radar.
Empire Trilogy. Feists story telling merged with Wurts prose.
Non-Fiction. I am a science guy so will leave this to you.
GGK, I stopped after his Fionvar Trilogy. I need to dive back into his books.
I'm actually diving back into some Elric starting tonight! I've really enjoyed Moorcock's works. As for GGK, I've heard that Fionavar is one of his lesser works, so hopefully you'll find some of them you enjoy. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Love this video :) You should read “Little Britches” By Ralph Moody it’s a wonderful western slice of life
Never heard of that one, so thanks!
Stoked about the book of the year. I finished it recently and wow, it's likely to be my 2024 book of the year. I'm also three books in to my GGK journey like you. Sarantine Mosaic next?
Glad you loved A Song for Arbonne as well! Tigana will be my next GGK - a buddy read with Johanna in April, but Sarantine is in the plan for later this year.
@@RedFuryBooks Great! I loved Tigana. Will be looking forward to your review.
Awesome!
Great video as always, thanks for all that you do. Question: any plans to read the Fionvar series by GGK? I read the first two books and consider them some of the best fantasy ever and then I’ve tried six times over the past twenty years to get through book three and have never been able to get through it. Would love to hear your thoughts.
I'll eventually get to Fionavar, but probably not this year. I've heard mixed things from Fionavar, but will look forward to picking it up.
