I honestly loved all 4, although Fall of Hyperion was my least favorite. But you could read Hyperion as a stand alone if you choose. You could read 1, 2, or 4, the only place you really can't stop is after Endymion.

I’m actually quite fascinated that the original vision was to be two trilogies with God Emperor being a standalone bridge of the two trilogies. That really makes me heartbroken that Frank passed before it was complete. I’ve recently begun reading Dune for the first time, and I’m currently half way through God Emperor. Personally, this is the greatest piece of science fiction I’ve ever read, and has made me so interested in reading more of Frank’s stories. As for how I would rank them: my 2 favorites so far are Dune Messiah and God Emperor. The original Dune is a very very close second, and I have to put Children of Dune last - I just couldn’t get into the story of it during my first read through, but maybe that’ll change with a second read. I’m so excited to see where this series goes!

    • @RedFuryBooks
      @RedFuryBooks 12 годин тому

Yes, it's really too bad that Frank never finished the series. I often wonder if my issues with Heretics and Chapterhouse would have been solved with the final installment, as I'm sure Frank had a plan.

I absolutely fell in love with The Winter King in 2007, finishing the series, not thinking that I could find anything better and jumped right into Pillars of the Earth, and it blew my mind. London by Edward Rutherford is another great epic work of historical fiction. I really miss those days and I desperately want to feel that love of reading again. Hopefully The Accursed Kings can light that spark. Thanks for the great video.

Highly recommend Mary Stewart's King Arthur series. I read the Crystal Cave while I was in high school and was pleasantly surprised when she followed up with The Hollow Hills and then the Last Enchantment. I have a fondness for Merlin/King Arthur stories and I think Mary Stewart's books are the best of those that I've read. Another series that I really enjoy is Steven Lawhead's versions: Taliesin, Merlin, and Arthur.

Thank you for this video, Josh. I appreciate your sensitive handling of a really difficult topic. Watching this video and your comments about r*pe culture and how it's rarely looked at from the victim's viewpoint made me think about another book that tackles that topic. I don't know if you have heard about or read 'Know my Name' by Chanel Miller but it's apparently a beautifully written response from the Stanford Univ. SA victim. I have read her trial statement, but not the book just because the subject matter is too much for me, however from what I have heard from reviews and from friends and even my husband who read it, it's an incredible book that challenges the idea that just because someone has athletic talent, they are somehow morally exempt and shouldn't have to face the consequences of their actions like everyone else. It just seemed like worth bringing this book up as part of the conversation :) PS - I have been avoiding Beartown myself because of the subject matter, but my husband says it's one of the best series he has read. Maybe someday I can handle it, I love Backman.

Thank you for your comment. Chanel Miller's book is on my radar, and I had intended to mention her incident in the video, but sometimes I forget to weave things into my reviews since I don't script anything. I have a friend continuing to try to convince me to give Beartown another try as well.

My favourite of the Brontë sisters is Anne! I loved the Count of Monte Cristo and it’s on my re-read list. Jane Austen is my absolute favourite author of all time. George Eliot, Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy are right up there with Austen for me. I don’t hear much about Anthony Trollope, but he’s so prolific and has a great style and very engaging commentary on social and political issues in Victorian era.

Thanks for sharing this difficult topic. As a mother is something that always is running in my mind. When my oldest daughter reached her teenage and started to attend to parties we developed a secret word , I told her that "if you see something strange or feel uncomfortable call me and tell me the secret word". The Word per se is something light for example: Hi Mom Can i stay? THE PARTY IS AWESOME, so that way I know right away that something is wrong (i also told my son to use it). Not only for them but also if it involve somebody else. Thanks again for address the topic.

I feel like this is a much bigger issue outside of small town USA and at the collegiate and professional level. Hell look at Jameis Winston and Florida State. This guy was drugging and raping girls and university leadership and police covered it up and they won a national title. They just built and unveiled a statue for the SOB last year. Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame… this crap happens at our elite universities and folks that absolutely know better tolerate it and cover it up.

This is an issue that the society and educational system have to take heed of. In Taiwan we accentuate sex education to raise awareness including molestation even in primary schools. You would be surprised to know how many cases teachers have to deal with of accusations. They all result in ignorance from the society where people don't understand the act committed by kids or youngsters can not be simply attributed to their emotional immaturity thus be easily forgiven. This will shape kids' understanding about respecting others when they grow up.

Chronicles of Prydain 'middle of the road'. No way! That 4th book, the way Alexander delivered to us 'who Taran was' and showed us that it doesn't matter where you come from, but rather where you are going was so great. It was what Rian Johnson was trying to do with the Last Jedi but he fell short. If he had delivered it like Alexander the fans would have loved it rather than been divided over it... but it just shows how hard it is to do that and Alexander did it beautifully.

At least in my edition, Childhood's End has a disclaimer: "The opinions expressed in this book are not those of the author." My sense is that this is a story that went in a completely different direction from what Clarke anticipated, such that he kind of gave it a side-eye. It definitely sticks in the mind.

Swan Song & Hand Maids Tale would make my list. I'm glad you recognize Swan Song. Lovely tribute to your friend, I enjoyed your intro before, now it's personal. I'm going to look into Cronin -- he is new to me.

We agree 11/22/63 is his best. I've read Connelly. I don't like fantasy. My question to you -- while reading settle in and feel relief when the vile profanity starts? Have you to finished a book and lowered the rating due to lack of female genitalia slang or explicit sex?

I am now officially on hold at the library for The Terror because a man on UA-cam made it sound good, albeit the same man hyped GWTW. I don't think I will ever understand the GWTW band wagon. I'm also going to try Lonesome Dove. I liked your presentation, new sub here.

I just want to say, this is such a great video. You strike such a great balance between not giving away too much about a book, while still selling its appeal. Pillars of the Earth is of a size, and has a premise, that would have kept me from ever trying it. But I have now purchased the book based off your praise, and am very excited to get started on it!

I read East of Eden as a young adult, and almost 50 years later, I’m rereading it right now. One of my favorite classics, judging by how many times I’ve reread it, is The Razor’s Edge. Larry Darrell, the main character, is someone I would like to be friends with.

That's an incredible bit of coincidence seeing Rooker Flynn in the same set of books as King Rat. That story was a huge source of inspiration for Rooker and the Locke Institute, and probably my favorite of the Asian Saga. Again, thank you so much for lending your keen eye to Rooker's story, Josh, you're wonderful!

@@RedFuryBooks It's no Shōgun but it is a fantastic amoral prison camp story. A bit of inspiration for Malkovich in Empire of the Sun as well. Plus, you know, 390 pages is nice.

I hope you have a crack at The Mountain in the Sea, a recent read for me. You can tell Nayler is a subject matter expert and that reflects to an interesting view on how it will look in our future!
