One of the most helpful paint job videos on UA-cam. A lot of great methods and tips shown! Now I learned that matt coat is thinner then clear coat so it's best to do the matt after sanding the clear with vinyl attached. Thanks so much for spreading your knowledge!
Thanks Martin for this video, one of your best definitely ! Because of your videos, I bought 3 days ago everything to do a diy paint job on my old bike with 2k primer, 2k clear coats (mat and glossy) and 2 colors. Now I will be back here in 1 year when I'm done with the sanding the frame :)
😂 funny...but seriously. 😐 At least heres someone rooted in reality. 90% of painting is the prep work. Or else its a lot of money and time for nothin. Im curious to see how that came out.
This was so motivational!! I have a number of older bikes but never dared to even consider repainting them until I stumbled across this video. Thank you!
Martin, I just wanted to say how much I've been learning from your entertaining and informative videos. I've painted a few bikes with mixed results (well, poor actually) but I can see many mistakes that I made and can't wait to try out some new techniques.
Man I totally love your video. Please make a video about how to sand pain in the ass areas, such as joints, bolt holes etc etc. Do you have an easy solution for them?
When painting a bike (carbon frame with 2k primer) I need to sand after the primer. Do I need to sand again after applying the base coating? Or is it enough for a high quality paintjob to sand the primer and then sand again in between the clear coating steps?
Great job! Should I wet sand and buff after I spray the color? I finally got a smooth coat of black on my stem. Before I use the 2K clear do I wet sand ?
Watching these really makes me want to paint my helmet color shifting gold and black. I'll have to pick up another helmet to test and practice!!! Great tutorial! I've learned more here about painting than I have in industrial design school
Very nice detailed video of how to do it! But the great key to having an amazing paint job is that you need a dust free room. Otherwise you will see it when you apply any sort of glossy finish on top
Hello Martin. I have sand blasted crmo steel frame. I want to go crystal white finish with clearcoat. Should I prime with red baresteel primer? Or add another layer of white/grey primer? Thank you for your advice. Brilliant videos. Keep up. Thanx
Hey! What great tutorials!! I really love your feed. Just have one question for you. I’ve worked with vinyl for quite some time and was just wondering why you are working with masking tape and/or clear packing tape instead of transfer tape? I found that regular transfer tape works better with vinyl. It is easier to remove after application than other types of tape and have less changes to tear the vinyl.
After you wet sand each time, do you clean the frames just with water or alcohol? If i cleaned with acetone during layers would it effect the fresh paint?
Yes Baby must have gone through your head.... god knows how many times..... such perfection.... i 💌 it for a spray job..... such admiration and inspiration..... teach me please

Well done videos man.!!! You are awesome. I am wanting to do my wheels and spokes matte black. In your opinion what paint would give the best matte finish?
I have aluminium frame with few visible paint chip. My question is after sanding should i use metal primer or epoxy primer? 2nd questtion is can i use paint remover for faster option?
I was thinking of spray frame black and then fog it with gold about 18" away! do you think it would work? or wrap frame with fishnet hose and spray gold.
If I wanted a matte clear coat on the frame (no base color, I want the natural carbon to show) with gloss logos, would I use the same method as your “more advanced method?”
Would it be enough to just paint the spots where i want the glossy finish with gloss clear coat or do i have to paint and then sand down the entire frame before applying the matt clear coat?
Martin, really appreciate your videos and the links with each. I have a carbon Rocky Mountain frame that I want to sand down, 2x primer, and color gloss black then 2x matte/satin clear like in the video. I have experience painting solid colors on bikes and feel like I can take it this far from your videos. Issue is that I want to paint on letters and some accents over the matte clear but have them show as gloss. Assume that I mask, then spray on the color for this but then spray 2x gloss maybe one coat before removing decals? Concern is will the lettering be too high with 1x color and 1x gloss clear. Thanks!
ETEO What would I need to do If I only want a Raw finish but want the steel frame to be protected from rust? Thanks for all the informative bike painting videos.
Thx for the great videos! Question, if I use 800 grit sandpaper to prep a painted bike for new paint will using the same grit before I put the clearcoat on scratch the paint I just put on?
In this video you recommend wet-on-wet spray painting, but in another you recommend waiting for the primer to dry, sanding it with 800 grit paper, then applying a second and final layer of primer. As far as I can tell, one method saves time, while the other saves spray cans. Is there anything more to it or am I overthinking all this? Eager to try and apply everything I've learned from your videos soon, when I get my steel frame sanded :)
You produce nice work so you must be doing things right. I can see for sure you choose good paint products so that's not a question for me. What I want to know is your process and timing. In this video you primed and laid a base color all in one step. Would priming, off-gassing for 2 days and then wet sanding the priming coat, cleaning, drying and then applying a top coat be better or worse or same and why? How long did you wait to apply the gloss/matt clear coats? It's obvious you didn't do the base/clear in one step since you wet sanded the base coat. Thanks for the great video and your time in putting it together and sharing it.
All great. Help needed: If I have used sprayMax 2k 680061 and is still soft after a week in cabin 50% humidity, +26degree Celcius temp., should I wait more or sand it off and do clear coat one more time? Cheers.
First you have to train your spaghetti arms to learn how to push the valve in the can hard enough to do a proper mix of the hardener and clear in the can.
Hello Martin, really great video! I would also like to paint my bike in matt/gloss at the moment and I used your template with the white pipe Oracal 631. I bought exactly the same cans as in your video (2K Spraymax primer and Montana Black).... Me I have 3 layers of primer and one layer of Montana Black in a wet process, just like you painted it. After that I sanded down the pipe with 800 grit paper and cleaned it with Spraymax 1k silicone remover... I then have 2 problems. The first problem is the Montana Power Orange color, it looks flaky. The second problem is the masking tape (Oracal 631). When I pull it off, a lot of glue remains on the pipe and the flakes of orange settle on the glue... I've already tried Oramask 813 but the same problem... Do you have a tip for me?
Do you have an example of a monochrome bike frame using matte and gloss finish that isn’t black? How does mixing matte and gloss look on that very nice blue color that you used in this video? Thanks for the awesome video.
Great video! Questions: If I use black primer and want white logos do I need to repaint black around the stickers after I have finished with the white or should I just go to the colour I want for the rest of the frame straight away? Thanks!!
Just bought a new MTB with matte paint. I would like to spray it with clear coat…any special prep I need to do before spraying on the the clear coat from can.. which videos in here show that?
Hi Martin, great videos. I have this problem whenever I spray my bike frame using spray can the colour is not uniform. I can see dark spot and light spot. I believe the spray can pressure is not uniform. Any tips?
Hi Ive been watching many of your videos recently because I want to turn my brand new red bike to all matte black. I have a question, can I get away with not sanding the brand new new bike frame and just prime it, paint it, and clear coat? Or will skipping this sanding step be hazardous. I dont think it will be terrible since its not rusted and its new and clean. Maybe im wrong, but thanks for the info.

Cause I have reasons.
The Montana clear is mainly UV protection? Would the 2k clear bond well to the Montana for better rockchip protection or is the Montana sufficient?
