What is the best paper to use? Card stock?
Hi! I've been TRYING to make prints from my Gelli plate, but I think I'm using the wrong type of acrylic paint. It's craft paint. Also, my brayer does NOT work like the brayers used in these tutorials. My brayer sometimes will not roll, it slides, makes marks, all kinds of problems. I've tried a couple of brayers thinking I had the wrong type. And, what type of paper are you using? Of course, I've used 110# cardstock, printer paper, and the backs of paper stores use to print signage.
Should I be watering down the craft paint? I'm on extremely limited budget and already have tons of craft paint.
Am I using too much paint if brayer is sliding around? I'm so frustrated with myself I just want to give up! I really would love to get the kind of awesome prints you guys are pulling; you make it look so EASY!!
Thanks for your time and help or suggestions is much appreciated!!
Christina Furner-Webber You are probably using too much paint. Just a little dab will be enough. Use the brayer lightly do not press down. Do not give up! The instructors you are seeing have done hundreds of prints. Do not water down the paint - craft paint has a lot of water to begin with. Have another piece of paper beside you to roll off excess paint. Also, watch Patti Parrish"s Gelli Plate videos for more hints and for her "go for it" attitude. Good Luck!
Christina Furner-Webber - it's Nancy from Gelli Arts and J Philly has a good suggestion - try using less paint. I have used multiple brands of craft paint & they work fine. The downside of some craft paints is that they can dry a bit more quickly than some of the other paints like Liquitex basics, Golden paints or DecoArts Media line so you'll need to watch out for that. We recommend a soft rubber brayer like the Speedball one we sell on our website or that you can find in most art and craft stores. Don't give up! As for paper - I think regular copy/printer paper is a great choice for getting started and then you can experiment with all styles and thicknesses. Just stay away from glossy papers and photo papers - they will stick to the plate and we worry you will damage the surface trying to get it off. Good luck and keep us posted!
Hi!! Thank you so much!! I have a mix of craft paint, but mostly FolkArt?? I have even thought to try gouache, maybe?? Anyway, I'll keep trying and again thank you so much for your help! Much appreciated!! I wish you a great day:-)
