Ha.. I’ve got this same combo atm. Got an air with 8gb.. was constantly maxing it out and hitting decent pressure levels so when I found a killer deal on an 18gb m3pro, I couldn’t resist! Now I’ve got an air for sale.. I do like the weight and slimness of the air better but the m3 has too many pros to not hang onto it instead.

A disadvantage is that it has 1 less extra port, 8 GB of Ram, and u can only connect 1 external display

air m1 16gb is a better choice
Programmers should try to get at least 16GB ram. 8GB is doable for small projects but is not future proof. 16GB will last you a long time and is good enough for most people, even most devs. 32GB and up is for large projects, running docker, VMs, large simulation, or emulation. Any higher and should be looking at a desktop workstation instead of a laptop
