Ray, I 100% agree. Rodney was the best comic I ever saw live. Way better than Carlin or Bobcat. And this roast was a disgrace to Rodney's legacy. It shows me that people like Seinfeld, Barr, Allen, Clay, Carrey, Foxworthy have no loyalty or appreciation for what he did for them. I'm an amateur comedian & my focus is impressions. I met Godtfried last year & did my impression of him, Yoda & Jim Carey. I had Gilbert laughing. When I told him I was an unknown comic and asked him for help. He got all quiet and depressed and said No. I'm sure If it was Rodney, he would of helped me.

@@stevesewall It may not show in this video but Rodney had
more respect than leaders of the world. He himself was sad
due to a lost childhood. Little love at the time grew to create
a big super heart for us to be loved and entertained.
It's our hearts that now need to be loved in trying times the
kind we have today. We not only need love and laughter, all
before it is ever forgotten but we need to think for ourselves.
This man did a lot of observing and thinking and told no one.
He did one other thing. He followed his dream. If we can't do it
full time, then we should consistently do it part-time non-stop.

Met him at the MGM Grand in Vegas. We were talking over a cup of coffee in the Grand Bar. He invited me to his show and I thanked him and asked about the tickets and he said " the box office opens at 4" . We laughed and he started to walk away. He turned around and asked me my date of birth. He scribbled it down and said early show 2 at the box office. They were there.

Boy, they went all out on the cast of roasters! You know, you can't consider yourself properly roasted, until you've been roasted by Louie Anderson.

I've seen Rodney on screen as a little girl and I loved his style, how he made jokes of such things like rejection, then a month ago I watched his Biography and now I understand much more about him as a man, a comedian with such great gifts that helped many people including me in so many ways. You are an Angle in life and in the after life. I'm sure you are with God making him laugh. What a guy!

Imagine a time when comedy giants like Rodney graced our tv screens and making us ALL laugh for hours. I miss those days for sure. They were much better than these days where we have to listen divisive media outlets talking nonstop about a sham presidential impeachment lead by a bunch of lying corrupt and hateful politicians. Enough of that and on with the roast!

Kind of hard to shame a joker. If they mentioned drugs and casually flashing his junk those were the faults he flaunted. Besides that his private life seemed to he little more than set ups for one-liners.

This was at a time when Roasts weren’t at their height and most of the friars club was old and dying off. Jeff Ross brought in then we era of roasting. Now it’s a platform for comics and young and hip and cool. Most roasts before weren’t televised and the ones that were on tv it was on Comedy Central which wasn’t mainstream at all back them. And these comics were close to Rodney personally. They performed on Rodney’s specials in the 80’s. Louie Anderson was a very popular stand up. The rest were decently popular whether you think they’re funny or not . The top comics of the day were like Carlin, Chris Rock, Chappelle, etc. This wasn’t their style. Or they were too young or too old or ethnic or niche New York comics. A lot of big comics were doing films or TV. It just wasn’t a hip time for stand up. Stand up came back in a big way about 10 years after this and then you had the roast of drew carey, Pamela Anderson, etc. So chill out. This roast as a whole was funny. Rodney’s bits alone are great

Well OK, but Rodney deserves better than most of this. For years I've been looking for a brilliant 5 minute monologue he did at this (or some other) roast that aired around 2002 - 2004. It was mostly about what it''s like to be a comedian, small time and big time. Advice to young would-be comedians. Like, be prepared. It was so honest and direct - an expose of show business, yet a business he still loved - I couldn't believe I was hearing it on TV. He talked about what it was like to be him, no holds barred. What a man, I've loved and respected him ever since. Anyone recall it, or know where it can be found?
