One of my players gets a whole lot of milage out of the randomly chosen "Underdark" Natural Explorer, because for some fricking reason that very specific one was chosen without knowing that I would pull out the "Out of the Abyss" module, which is set 99% in the Underdark. @@bradthelad8308 I played a multiclassed artificer/druid once and killed that worlds God in two rounds.
So what happened was, my DM was doing this thing with my concept for a character, I always play characters that are very weak on paper, because I like that it forces me to be creative and solve my problems for myself instead of just throwing a fireball at it. And so they took the Made in his image bit from the bible, and made it so if you fight him he is you but better. My character at the time was a little cyborg chemist lad that I named Al, because I thought the FMA pun was hilarious.
What I ended up coming up with to beat him was my character used a little item that worked like heat metal without me having to waste a spell, it was basically just chemistry to make super thermite. And my character put it in his joints then Shillelaghed his ass and bonked him so he fell over into the river and drowned. Then I got an opportunity to get in the last word, and I said "Damn bitch really thought he was me but better, when my strength comes from the 'flaws' he got rid of"

I use Ranger as a sort of balancing class. I often become the face of the party due to how many years of roleplaying experience I have compared to my friends.
So I feel the Ranger is a great way to become a jack of all trades that doesn't overshadow my party members.

    • @chaoticdetectivepeach
      @chaoticdetectivepeach Рік тому +30

Be careful with that, a jack of all trades can easily overshadow the party if you're not careful, I stumble into that trap regularly when I'm out here just tryna not die, because my DM is allergic to setting up regular encounters for me, whenever he splits the party for solo character development. The amount of options a characters like that have are insane I beat one of the BBEGs in one of those solo sessions by just being a fuckin nusence, literally pulled out a magic laser pointer type thing and permanently blinded her, and then tricked her into walking into my weapon

    • @epicslayerguy99
      @epicslayerguy99 Рік тому +3

I'd argue a bard or rogue makes a better jack of all trades, rangers could do it, especially since they naturally get the extra attack feature and all that, but you're also sacrificing a number of class features that are actually helpful, because they get replaced with ranger things like "i'm better at fighting one type of creature" or "i'm better in this one environment", heavily limiting their "jack of all trades" thing, rogues and bards may not always be as physically statted as a ranger (at least in strength) but they tend to have more proficiency choices, bards get half proficiency in everything they aren't proficient in, (literally called "jack of all trades" iirc) and both classes get expertise naturally if i'm not mistaken.
If you meant jack of all trades in a combat sense, then i apologize for the unrelated rant, but there are classes built to be jack of all trades, ranger is just the runt of the litter.

      Favored Foe (Optional)
This 1st-level feature replaces the Favored Enemy feature and works with the Foe Slayer feature. You gain no benefit from the replaced feature and don't qualify for anything in the game that requires it.
When you hit a creature with an attack roll, you can call on your mystical bond with nature to mark the target as your favored enemy for 1 minute or until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell).
The first time on each of your turns that you hit the favored enemy and deal damage to it, including when you mark it, you increase that damage by 1d4.
You can use this feature to mark a favored enemy a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Your walking speed increases by 5, and you gain a climbing speed and a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.
      Tireless (10th Level)
As an action, you can give yourself a number of temporary hit points equal to 1d8 + your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1 temporary hit point). You can use this action a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

As a reward after helping a miners-civilization they get a boulder... About 2-3ft tall. The miner civilization says that the rock has something special inside. Because the Stone Shaman, said so. They have been keeping it for a long time, but nothing happened.
If the party decided to crack the rock open, there will be a quite expensive gemstone inside of it, also a wild magical surge happens...
If they decide to keep the boulder for lets say... 2 to 3 sessions... The boulder 'Hatches' reviling that the special boulder was a rock-elemental. Like a little stone Golem. By feeding it Gemstones and using him in battle, he can grow all the way up to the biggest rock-moster available... (Ofcourse scales with Player level)...

Gonna DM my first DnD oneshot (lvl 6) soon after only DMing with another system, so I have zero balancing skills. I have a fun idea for an item:
Basically a talisman/amulett thingy that gives any player attuned to it three lvl 1 and two lvl 2 spellslots, which they can either use to cast their own spells or some evocation spells from the druid spell list (probably cure wounds, fairy fire, thunderwave and gust of wind; to allow non-magic users to use the item as well). When one of the spellslots of the item ist used however, the player must roll a D100 on the Wild Magic Surge table to determine a wild magic effect to happen.
Is this balanced? Or even a good idea? Sounds kinda fun in my head

It always hurts... The character I played for the longest was a ranger, and I loved it don't get me wrong, but most of the time I was a worse fighter. I thought about how to make rangers uniquely important a lot especially after I became the DM but... It always feels like if I make those changes they will either be essential, or feel just as lame as they do just a little more powerful.

Ive always built my rangers to just be dexfighters, and honestly, you find niches as you go, at least in my experience
Forgo the bow, pick up blind fighting and a longsword, take the walker subclass, and become the defacto pointman of the party! Its a fun way to dextank, especially if you're playing with a sneakier, snoopier party

    • @yami-131

@@divineterabyte5181 that's a solid build. and sounds like a lot of fun 😄
I had a Bow-Dex hunter ranger for the longest time and now I'm stuck as the forever DM 😅
I gotta say I actually really liked my character though and in fact for most of the campaign I was the major damage dealer in the party, even at level 9 with wizards in the party, so I never felt underpowered. we did have some minor modification though (closer to UA ranger)
it's just that especially now with the eyes of a DM I don't see the ranger base as a unique experience unless in certain circumstances where exploration really shines. that is what I want to change.... to find a fix for the class. I've had plenty of Ideas but nothing that I consider brilliant without swinging the other factors in the game too much

I just created a ranger swarmkeeper for a campaign currently running with 12th level player characters. The optional rules that replace many of the original rules are pretty good. I have a range of spells now not just from the subclass but also the main class. And my dm gave me quite the funds to create his inventory with a ruling on how much to spend on magic items per their rarity and I scoured for an amazing background too. I am yet to try him out but I fear I might come in way OP.

I made a homebrew witcher class but based it on the ranger base class. It basically makes the ranger everything it should be. A very adept monster hunter with expertise in tracking and survival skills.
We're doing final edits and play testing to feel out the sign magic and other unique features. But so far. It makes the class so much more versatile and gives them consistent utility and damage. Its still outpaced by well built blaster or nova classes, but it brings more utility than the typical barb or fighter can.

My first character was a ranger, and hes still my favorite, using tbe fey wanderer playtest subclass hes able to do a decent amount of damage. On average he did about 48 in 2 shots and could do up to 236 in 2 shots if i somehow rolled max damage, he had the highest hp of the group and did the highest damage. He also helped our 3 foot tall sorcerer die from "penetration" damage when the sorceror tried to seduce the giant, and, being the only one who could speak giant, lead to a pretty hilarious end for our sorcerer

I love ranger so damn much - The new subclasses and Tashas help it a lot in combat however i really love how it has a big focus on out of combat abilities. One of my biggest issues with classes like barbarian and fighter is they are purely focused on fighting, and the lack of out of combat abilities make them not as enjoyable for me to play.
Also playing a ranger with a DM who does homebrew makes it so much enjoyable, there is so much you can do - Poisons, Herbalism, unique non-magical arrows. Also because base class is kinda weak in combat, it really helped me learn to be creative with my spells/abilities.
After playing and mastering ranger, i just cant play any other one.
Been a Ranger main for 4 years now.

My very first character was a ranger because it sounded cool and I had no idea what any of the other classes did but I wanted to be unique.
I had a cool story for him as well. He was a schizophrenic loner who spent the last few years of his life living as a nomad, constantly on the run from a demon that cursed him as a child.
Every single skill and proficiency he had, I gave him reason for having it. He can speak Draconic? He met a dragon during his travels who cared for him when he was injured. His natural enemy is beasts? He was a skilled hunter, raised by an adoptive family of elves with 3 brothers who all hunted together.
During his adventures with my party, he had some character development as he opened himself up to other people again, through the few times my DM let us have some decent roleplay moments.
The gameplay wasn’t half bad either. I utilized horde breaker and Hunters Mark to not only defeat loads of enemies with surprising efficiency, but I also was able to detect a false hydra even when it was untraceable solely because I hit it with my Mark. It’s a shame we ended the campaign so soon, I miss Shadow and I would have loved to see him grow even more.
