Why You Shouldn't Be Afraid Of Wireless Gears! | Can We Destroy SRAM AXS?

  • Mountain Bike electronic groupsets have come a long way in the last few years and with the release of the SRAM Eagle AXS system in February 2019, we saw new wireless shifting technology hit the MTB market that included the XX1 Eagle AXS X01, Eagle AXS and the more recently developed GX Eagle AXS model! Since then we've seen a lot of high-end Mountain Bikes beginning to ship with the AXS system, but more & more people are adopting the system onto existing Mountain Bikes now which begs the question - Just how tough are wireless groupsets and are they a worthwhile upgrade?

I'm an older cyclist that is not into abusing bikes and myself on technical trails. Strictly paved roads and tame gravel trails. My son-in-law installed the SRAM Rival AXS on my hybrid gravel bike because I ride a lot of hills. What a change! The instant, precise response, even under load is amazing. Never going back! Oh, and my son-in-law did the Tour Divide this past June riding 2660 miles on the eastern divide of the Rocky Mts and his SRAM X01 performed flawlessly.

I've installed the GX on my Specialized Stumpjumper and have an XX1 on my Kenevo SL. Best part change I have ever done an I am riding 30 years plus. Technically I cannot figure out any difference between the two systems when I am riding. I guess I would be perfectly happy with "only" a GX. Would definitely not change back. Love your channel Doddy - definitely my favourite! 😎👍🏻

Thanks for the video, I've been considering purchasing the GX AXS upgrade kit. Seeing how well it has held up to the use/abuse of hard trail use really puts another check mark in the pros column for me. I've never really been too worried about the wireless technology, pretty much the only part that ever concerned me was if it used an encrypted signal and that is a moot point since it does.
On side note.. As a aviation mechanic in the military, I've been around electrically controlled fly by wire systems for decades. So the idea of a complete wireless braking system keeps popping into mind. On aircraft like the F-16 and others there is only a electrical signal from the brake pedals in the cockpit to the brake control valve(s) on or near the landing gear. With the miniaturization of electronics and the very low pressures(aircraft hydraulic systems operate around 3000-5000 psi) bike brakes use the valves and reservoir could be located on the caliper body itself. The big hurdle for it would be in programming in the modulation so that as you pressed more firmly the braking force would increase as well.. Like I said, a very interesting idea....If they ever want a test rider for it. I'm game!

Doddy, I’m not convinced. You’re going to have to send me the GX upgrade kit in the post and let me evaluate it for a couple of years. Also, a lot for my CX bike so I can test on gravel. 😂
But for real, I’ve been planning on swapping the Deore XT setup on my Scottt Spark for AXS, and I’m probably going to use it on my Trek Crockett CX bike until it gets replaced by a Checkpoint eTap in august, and then the GX AXS will slide over to the Spark. You actually 100% addressed my remaining concerns in this video! Thanks!

This video came out the day I did my very first ride on my AXS derailleur. The day was wet with intermittent rain, slippery trails and lots of mud and puddles. Busted out 30km and not once did I worry about it skipping gears or not engaging properly and every gear was just there for me to keep grinding forward. I left it overnight with mud caked on it and before cleaning gave it a few shifts and BAM next gear without fail. I've had issues with cables binding in the outer housing on both derailleur and dropper post but now with both replaced its one less thing to worry about. They are definitely quality of life upgrades but the quality is mint 👌

OK I have been off my bike for some years (before Long Covid - some of us got post viral chronic fatigue) I still own a K2 4500 with Smart Shocks, a 9v battery operated front & rear active suspension unit that used vector forks (similar to a Cannodale lefty) that must be out of patent by now. It was amazingly effective, I just wish that it was still available today in the aftermarket. So the idea of wireless shifters looks like something I might try when I get back to riding!

wireless is super convenient when traveling by plane. Remove the derailleur and dropper for more room in a travel bag and simply Install them at the destination. Worked incredibly well for my buddy on our last trip. I wish they had a smaller cassette, like 10 to 46 12 speed, and shorter cage option. I don't need 50 or more teeth, especially for my local trails.

It's just improving the tire not necessarily doing anything revolutionary. If we really wanted to improve the drivetrain for MTB's then manufactures need to push hard for an internal drive system- like the Rohloff. Or the other type with the gearbox situated down near the cranks. They could be made very lite using a carbon fiber body and aluminum or titanium gears.

  • @jmo2752

I can appreciate all the points Doddy makes with regard to 'real world' reliability (although I met a guy on Porcupine Rim who's electric mech had crapped out and it was stuck in the highest gear - long ride home with that!), but I still really can't see the benefit... they weigh more, cost more to buy and replace (if you did ever damage one), and I'd be interested to see how much 'crisper' the shifting is compared to a cable operated XT or XTR rear mech? - maybe something for the Tech show to do as a comparison in future?

Thanks a lot for such a honest and useful video.
Is there a reason why you did not mount the Derailleur directly to the frame (Bike not compatible with direct mount / no derailleur-hanger) ?
If the bike is compatible with direct-mount (Supercaliber Gen1 for example), would it affect the shifting if not using a derailleur-hanger when mixing the GX AXSwith Shimano?
    Thanks a lot :)

Hi Doddy. I've heard people say how the overload clutch is one of the better features of an axs system over a mechanical one. The advantage being less bent hangers and poor shifting. However, shouldn't a mechanical deraillieur also move out of the way in an impact as the rock pushes back on the deraillieur spring? My question being is the overload clutch primarily used to protect the motor or does it actually prevent misaligned shifting, if so is it any better than a mechanical deraillieur?

You're not saving weight, as you're getting a battery and a motor, what you're getting is flawless shifting performance and ease of setup. Price wise they have definitely dropped at least in Europe, used to be 800€ for X01 AXS Upgrade kit and now it's around 600€ however you will have to some shopping around to find that price.

I love the idea of electronic shifting. I’m just not a good enough of a rider to constitute the cost. If I thought it would shave a couple minutes off my lap time, or make it easier to climb a steep hill, I’d buy it right now. As good as this thing is, it’s still not gonna do much to make me 15 years younger, or 20 lbs lighter.

After a few months of having an XC race bike with XO1 AXS, I just forget that it's there in a good way. Going back to a mechanical groupset, the inconsistency is definitely noticeable. However most of the inconsistency is from the rider. With AXS, no matter how hard you are shifting and no matter how many gears you are trying to change, the shifting always feels effortless. Another huge benefit to racers is the ability to hold down the shifter to shift down multiple gears. This means a much smaller hand position change is required, which is extremely beneficial when trying to shift down at the top of a rocky downhill, or trying to shift up when standing up and sprinting.

I've had GX AXS for a year so far. Ridden in all conditions from dusty Morzine in summer to full depths of winter in the South of England. Hasn't missed a beat so far and I'm very impressed. Shifting isn't quite as crisp as Shimano due to lack of Hyperglide style technology but it's still very good.

I think they are great and well over due,
im just waiting now for the voice activated version to totally get rid of cables, switches, leavers & buttons & before you say it no its not impossible, remember 3/4 of it is already done for you, all it needs now is a mic & a reciever with the reciever already there,
personally i think they feel slightly more robuster, probably because of the technology in them so they have to be a bit more solid, remember these gadgets have been in R&D & tested rigorously for years way before the prototypes come into production,

Same day I got a GX AXS rear derailleur, my propped up bike was blown over by a sudden gust of wind. The derailleur hit the ground and bent my steel hanger effortlessly under the frame. It’s like the large, rigid surface area of AXS derailleurs makes it easier to do this as its cable operated brother has a little give when pressed in whereas AXS - solid as a rock. Angry at myself though for propping my bike too upright on a windy day.
