The entirety of the 1972 "Exile On Main Street" double album is a MASTERPIECE, easily one of the highlights of the Rolling Stones' entire recorded career. The same could be said for the 1978 "Some Girls" album. Get On It....!!!!
Filler songs?! Maybe one or two. It’s amazing, they were at the Height of their writing. They hit every style with top quality material. The caveat is the SOUND which Brad picked up on. Recorded in a chateau with a mobile unit parked outside. Sound can be a bit muddy and harsh at times. Not the clean studio sound of Sticky Fingers but better in the variety and quality of the SONGS and that’s saying something since ‘Fingers’ is a classic as well.
I like it better, actually, especially the live version used in the movie "FM". The one with Waddy Wachtel playing lead guitar and adding backup vocals.
When it comes to finding the "right" partner it's like gambling. You throw the dice and take your chances. Brad rolled a Lex & Lex rolled a Brad. For them, they each got a winning roll of the dice. Almost every time I hear a Rolling Stones song I think 100% Keith Richards, the genius.
Exile on main Street is by far my favourite stones album. The fascinating thing about it is how it was made in a basement in South of France. By this time they were seriously fucked up on heroin and Keith named his boat mandrax. It's qualudes from wolf of wall street. The people that came and went were people ranging from world class musicians to local gangsters to bums of the street. Good times Edit, the name of the album is due to the fact that they had to leave UK because they had to pay 97% tax. Every million made the band made they would have received £30k. Late 69s early 70s was the stones best years, the Mick Taylor years. an absolute monster that had some of the most melodic and emotional solos.
@woody81 ...yes, well said. And among those that came and stayed was Gram Parsons who was Keefs shoot em up buddy. Gram was heavily influenced by the Bakersfield sound. Which in turn influenced Keith. Ironically, Mick was not happy with Gram and his bad habits so he raised a shit storm and finally threw him out but it was Mick who went the furthest with the Bakerfield sound including this tune but of course the pinnacle being Far Away Eyes........."I was driving home early sunday morning through bakersfield" Gram Parsons. Influenced one of the greatest rock bands in history. Crazy.
@@_LVC Blackberry Smoke is a great band and the Stoned EP is great with one take and zero overdubs cut live direct to vinyl. Love to see these Autotune BS new bands try that
Linda said that she ran into Jagger and told him how much she liked the song but that she didn't know the lyrics, to which he "didn't hesitate" to write them down for her.

'The Blackberries' were absolutely brilliant on Humble Pie's 'Black Coffee'. Catch the live video. The late Steve Marriott was also amazing on lead vocals.
It's a gambling metaphor for sex...you never know what you're gonna get when you roll the dice...you never know what you're gonna get when you hook-up...love your reactions to the Stones...
This is from the middle of the Rolling Stones best period. They did a four-album stretch, all produced by Jimmy Miller, where every song on every album is absolutely great. Starting with "Beggars Banquet" (1967), "Let it Bleed" (1969), "Sticky Fingers" (1970), and finishing with the album this song was on "Exile on Main Street"(1971) is a stretch of music almost unmatched in history. Pick any random song on any of those albums. It'll be a classic.
The whole album (Exile on Main Street) is wonderful but the groove on this song is just sublime. In all the years of listening to this song I don't think I've ever wondered too much about the lyrics.
Interesting fact about the album this song was on, Exile On Main Street, a double album ( the only double studio album they ever released) it is considered a masterpiece but out of a mess of songs, this was the only big single hit. Shows you how albums were selling as albums not because of hits. Linda Ronstadts' cover well worth listening to also.. nice reaction
i believe happy was the only other single to chart from the album, & it got up to 22. great song, one of my favourites (keith's best turn as a vocalist imo) but like a lot of the album, it's not a single. the record is chockfull of some of their greatest stuff, but there are no other obvious hits on it.
This was high school party music for me; nobody ever really knew all the words to it (or cared about what it meant), but it would fill up a dance floor in a New York second!
Tumblin dice is quintessential Keith Richards, in that he always said “ it ain’t the rock, it’s the roll” ! Yes, The song rocks, but Listen to how his “open G“ guitar tuning rolls your spine. The man is brilliant !
Such a cool song, Jimmy Miller on drums, Mick Taylor on bass still pure Stones. Love the buried vocals and sometimes the lyrics aren‘t literal. I do enjoy your videos.
The Stones liked Country and often took inspiration from it, but often and especially live would play it tongue in cheek. Great example is their "Far Away Eyes"
Funny y'all should think of country. Keith Richards has said that he was greatly influenced by country music around this time. Especially after visiting the south. When he was writing a lot of the music for Exile on Main Street, he was thinking of the country side of the blues. Another great tune from this album is Sweet Virginia. The album really doesn't have a bad song on it.
Like everybody else here is saying, Exile on Main is one of the greatest rock albums of all time, hands down. Sweet Virginia has got to be my favorite track on the album.
Every time I see one of these Stones lyrics videos I learn lyrics I never heard before, even tho I’ve heard the songs 100s of times. 😂 Love Keith’s vocals on this
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song coming out of the radio. I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever heard. I still feel that way.
Love the Soul Sisters on the backing vocals..Can't remember thier names , but they also worked for Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Peter Gabreil and many others..got voted into the Rock n' Roll H.O.F as a team a few years back.

It’s using gambling as a metaphor for the cut n thrust of one night stands/weekend flings etc, and yes, the Stones are meshing country and gospel with their usual mix of rock n blues 😎
"Exile on Main St" was recorded in the south of France in 1971-1972, real close to the casinos in Monte Carlo.....hence the songs, "Casino Boogie" and "Tumbling Dice"....
First, Brad, you ain't gonna fit in in that outfit. Second, spot on on you never know what you're gonna get. Third, not that anyone should try to cover a Stones tune but you absolutely have to give Linda Ronstadt's version of this tune a listen. You will not be disappointed.

Absolutely
Greatest Rock N Roll band ever 🤘🤘
Yes Peter, I agree. Check out the unreleased song from Goats Head Soup called All the Rage
Man that groove. Is it Country? Is it Blues? Soul? Rock n' Roll? R n" B?...Just the Stones innit? What a band.
It's Cosmic American Music. That's what the Stones always were at their purest and best, and Exile embodies that wholly.
Rock n roll is born from R& B, with lots of soul. Not country although
Country these days has picked up
Rock n roll vibes
"Fever in the funkhouse now"... this is one of my favorite Stones songs. Top 3.
