I had this as a mono single and Mick's vocals were more up front. The whole album Exile on Main Street is one of those albums that needs to be played from start to finish. It's something how five British guys went to the South of France as tax exiles recorded mostly the instrumental tracks and were later kicked out so they finished up in Los Angeles. When the Album was released Rolling Stone Magazine Trashed it but it soon became one of the must have albums up there with Abbey Road

Exile on Main Street might just be the best Rolling Stone album. A 2-disc assortment of rock, blues, country, and even gospel. I was fortunate to score a seat at the L.A. Forum (Completely sold-out in minutes for a two concert day, one in the afternoon and another in the evening) for their tour of this album. Simply great. Opening act, Stevie Wonder. This was back in 1972 when they were still on top of their game. I remember the entire audience (and me) singing with them to "Sweet Virginia". So many great tracks, but those I strongly recommend would be Soul Survivor, Ventilator Blues, Shine a Light, Let it Loose. Geez. So many great tracks on this album. Another track I recommend for you react to would be "Time Waits for No One" from the album, "It's Only Rock 'n Roll". Great guitar solo work by Mick Taylor.

Now, do yourselves a big favor find the lyrics (they’re some of Mick’s best) and pull up any one of three live performances by Linda Ronstadt killing this back in the day. Her vocal strength gave her no trouble throwing her voice to the back of a concert hall, along with all instruments on stage. It was a thing of beauty. Also, Vince Gill, Keith Urban and Albert Lee do a really nice live version at Clapton’s Crossroads Festival. All great stuff to rock out too. 🤘😎

Exile On Main Street is The Stones at their most laid back and I love it. It was very much of the times. Lots of groovy vibes and lots of chronic. In fact I can just picture the stones in a smoke filled recording studio making this album. Many people think of the Stones as Mic Jagger and his band and he is known for his theatrics on stage but I think the best Stones music was made when he blended into the music. 60's and 70's Stones fans - discuss amongst yourselves!

From their chaotic double album "Exile on Main Street" in 1972, the murky sound has been described as "mud", with Jagger's voice buried in the mud. Great reaction to a great song from an equally great album (close to my favorite, at least in fourth place, with STICKY FINGERS being my absolute favorite, BEGGAR’S BANQUET, maybe my second, LET IT BLEED, third, and maybe this one tied with Their Satanic Majesties Request for fourth place). Mick Taylor was the lead guitar player then and is still my favorite lead guitarist on Rolling Stones history. Thanks for choosing the song, Reacting to it and sharing that reaction with us. It’s like reliving it all over again for the first time

Jay is right, Jagger’s voice is too deep in the mix, but that the only criticism I could make of this song. And in fact, the whole “Exile on Main Street” thus comes off has a very muddy mix - but it was intentional to give it a more authentic blues vibe

Half of this album was recorded in Keith's basement on the French Riviera, and the other half, including this song, was recorded in Olympic Studios in the US. It is very much an ensemble album in its mix. Very rock and roll with a good mix of country blues. Hence Jagger's Barkerville country vocals on a lot of tracks. This is the greatest Stones album of all time!

I have to agree with a lot of the other comments requesting that you watch Linda Ronstadt performing "Tumbling Dice" live. While the live performance in Atlanta 1977 is exceptional, I prefer the live performance from the movie 'FM'....simply because the lighting is better, so the visuals are better. She knocks it out there either way.

  • @scottfrench4139

From their incredible "Exile on Main St." album (1972) -- the story behind the making of this record, at a rented villa in the south of France, is fantastic. Lots of debauchery. And they booted Gram Parsons from the villa for partying too hard.
Mick's vocals buried in the mix, throughout "Exile on Main St.," was a brilliant artistic choice and hugely influential. That's part of what makes this, IMO, their finest hour. (Well, that and Mick Taylor, the best lead guitarist they ever had.)
This album is an incredibly deep well. My favorite song on the album is "Torn and Frayed," and these also are among their best work:
    Soul Survivor
    Let it Loose
    Loving Cup
Stop Breaking Down (Robert Johnson cover)
    Rocks Off
    Ventilator Blues
    Casino Boogie
    Shine a Light
    Rip This Joint
    All Down the Line
    Sweet Virginia
You guys should try reacting to full albums. From the mid-1960s and into the 2000s -- before the internet took root and sites like Spotify and its predecessors emphasized songs/singles, the album was the primary means of communication in rock. On the best of these albums, the deep cuts were usually better than the "hits."

Creedence laid down the template for Exile with their 1969 album Willy and the Poor Boys. That relentless rhythmic stroke that Keith (and Mick) display on Sticky Fingers and Exile was clearly influenced by "It Came Out of the Sky" among other tracks.

Yeah, remember how I would reference those "greatest albums ever" lists? "Exile on Main Street" is the Rolling Stones album that shows up on those.
A pretty good time to peak, considering they'd already been around for a decade by then. (By contrast, The Beatles' recording history was only 9 years long. The Doors were recording for 5 years. CCR recorded for 3 years, took a year off, and came back with a very poor final album before breaking up. And other examples.)

  • @CC-oi9mc

That's the production style of this album - it's like being lost in the middle of an out of control party, it's meant to be dense and disorienting. It's about letting those elements put you in a setting or give you imagery and a vibe not just the pure composition of the song.

Just finding this now. This is a magical tune. just some insight for you....it is played in Open G (except the slide (Mick Taylor) and lead (Keith)) Bass is played by Mick Taylor and also plays the slide. Mike Jagger plays one of the guitars you hear. Lyrics were done at overdub time in L.A. Mick goes to see Aretha play at a church while doing overdubs, hence the gospel feel.
What made me comment was you saying how Mick's vocals are not more in front. that is exactly what he says also. maybe the wrong mix got in.
So glad you can appreciate them. From a deep fan here!!!

Great song, Great Reaction. Very Challenging recording process. There were over 100 takes in the making of the song. Mick Jagger played rhythm guitar as well as lead vocals. Mick Taylor played slide guitar and bass on the track. Keith Richards played rhythm and lead guitar and backing vocals. Charlie Watts played drums but for the ending of the song Jimmy Miller played the overdubbed the drums. Nicky Hopkins, the Stones go to guy for piano parts, played piano.
The lyrics were not completed during the sessions in France. The album was finished up at Sunset Sound studio in Los Angeles.
Andy Johns, one the engineers on the album, recorded various overdubs and vocals at Sunset sound and worked with Keith and Mick on the mixing. Keith and Mick kind of worn out on trying to get the mixes right and Andy ended getting it together the best he could. As I said, it was very challenging, but it worked out well in the end. 🎸😎
