Girls in those days were more evolved emotionally, more beautiful and stylish, more appealing aesthetically....what a joy to behold, so refreshing and liberating to the spirit. They were not vulgar at all, just sweet, nice and groovy.

That wasn't how it was viewed at the time. It was seen as symptomatic of moral degeneration by a critical mass of people who's views were still broadly in line with people such as Mary Whitehouse. Your rose-tinted view of the world has somehow recast this as wholesome, when it's really nothing more than titilation set to dumbed-down music that's willfully antithetical to the highest cultural standards set by the 19th Century classical canon.
Don't get me wrong: THIS is why I think TOTP was great. it stuck two fingers up to those values and by doing so forced people to defend them. Humanity is accelerated by conflict.

Very profound, but I've seen photos of previous generations and I've seen two (maybe even three) generations of youngsters grow up, and judging by the lard-arsed young tattooed ladies waddling around where I live I still think i saw the best. So many great menmories of muscle cars (Mopar Superbee, 70 Mach I Mstang, Camaro SS 396) and the party's (keggars + rock festivals) and great music! @@LouLou-tl1gv I agree, why do they want to look like plastic dolls full of botox and fillers. That Kardashian woman with a big backside, injected it to look enormous. WHY? Can balance a cup and saucer on one cheek and your dinner on a plate on the other. And don't get me started about Caterpillar eyebrows and trout pouts, and huge false eyelashes resembling spiders on their eyes, don't they see how ridiculous they look? Only a vain man would want that sort. A REAL man would rather have a nice girl minus of that. A natural looking girl is far mire beautiful than a fake Barbie knock off? Btw. I am female so telling it from our point of view. I never had problems having some nice lad to dance with at youth club discos as a teen, or one 18 at night clubs. Did'nt bother with hardly any make up, and wore clothes that fit and looked stylish. My late husband said I caught his eye as I was'nt dressed like a cheap tart with skirt up my backside, boobs hanging out and gross tattoos all over me. We were together 37 years before he passed from cancer, that was 10 years ago. When out and about I still get more admiring glances than those over 40 years younger than me as I'm well groomed, can put an outfit together that's suitable for my age but still has style and not a tattoo in sight. In my day only MEN had tattoos, not women. Who wants to go out looking like a toddler scribbled all over them with permanant marker when they were asleep? 😱

TOTP was always notorious for having miserable down-trodden looking audiences, especially the girls, who were constantly herded about like sheep from one part of the studio to another and instructed to dance. To me and my friends as teenage girls at the time, most of the dancers in the audience, even if pretty, appeared slightly zombiefied, while the professional dancers seemed unnaturally animated and sexualised.
From our perspective then, TOTP, while annoying and not very cool, was still essential viewing since for a few years it was the ONLY pop music programme on TV where artists actually appeared to mime/fake perform their latest record.. which was better than nothing...
Ready Steady Go when it came along on a rival channel was a much better show. More fun, more spontaneous, less fake, more hip!

They kept looping certain sections but it's a great piece of history of that time. It's funny to see the contrast between the professional dancers and the pretty girls from the audience they picked. The girl in the centre seems scared to move (they probably told her to stand on this sport and DON'T MOVE'). My favourite is the girl in the white boots behind the bars on the right. She was a 10 for sure! :-)

Best of all you could have a conversation with her without her saying want to come over to my (crib). Back then people spoke English that you could understand.
