- My favorite Led Zeppelin song of all-time "Boogie With Stu" [possibly my favorite Rock and Roll song of all-time] with the following description:
Boogie With Stu:
"Boogie with Stu" is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin from their 1975 album Physical Graffiti.
Recording And Production:
It was a jam recorded in 1971 at Headley Grange by Island Studios, London, where the band had done most of the recording for their fourth album. They were using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio and were accompanied by Rolling Stones' road manager and pianist, Ian Stewart, who ended up jamming with the band on piano.
According to Jimmy Page this song would not have emerged had it not been for the particularly informal 'live-in' environment at Headley Grange where it was recorded:
Some of the things that happened there, like "Boogie With Stu" where Stu turns up and plays a piano that's totally unplayable, were incredible. That was too good to miss because Stu wouldn't record, he wouldn't do solo stuff. All of these things wouldn't end up on albums as far as other people were concerned, but they did with us.
It has been reported that Plant played guitar on the track (Page playing mandolin). The slapping guitar came from an overdub session with an ARP guitar synthesizer. Bonham's drumming was improvised in the studio. The song was never performed live.
Original Title:
The working title for this song was "Sloppy Drunk", said to be a title that Robert Plant came up with but in fact that of a Leroy Carr song. The song is credited to "Page/Plant/Jones/Bonham/Ian Stewart/Mrs. Valens", being heavily based on Ritchie Valens' "Ooh, My Head". Valens's publisher, Kemo Music, filed suit for copyright infringement and an out of court settlement was reached. As Page explained:
What we tried to do was give Ritchie's mother credit, because we heard she never received any royalties from any of her son's hits, and Robert did lean on that lyric a bit. So what happens? They tried to sue us for all of the song!
Personnel:
Robert Plant - vocals, acoustic guitar
Jimmy Page - mandolin
John Paul Jones - bass guitar
John Bonham - drums
with:
Ian Stewart - piano

They just never get boring. The only band who never had a bad song on any of their recordings. Still an avid fan at 70 y.o. I'll be listening to them until I'm 100. Volume up.

You can watch endlessly Why? Because the talented actor Alberto Martinez is dancing. He gets into character and performs it perfectly, plus a sexy colleague. I watched it a hundred times and can’t stop watching.
Not only is Boogie With Stu such a great jam - but whomever thought of finding this particular old movie clip of Adalberto Ramirez "Resortes" goes together like peanut butter and jelly, like rum and coke, like 3 shots of Tequila and hit of lime! Bravo! His dancing is as perfect and amazing as the song! I have already watched this three times in a row - and plan to watch more and learn his moves LOL!

Back when l was a kid getting into Led Zeppelin, driving my parents crazy, I brought by record player down into the living room where my parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles were playing cards and INSISTED they all listen to this. Within seconds, they were all up dancing to it! Great memories. May they all R.I.P.
Sweet!
Holy cow, man! I used to do the same with the older relatives in my family. They were always telling us kids about songs and bands and singers from the 40-60's. And anytime I discovered something new, I usually played it for them on Sundays. Best times ever. I remember my Uncle dancing to Queen's "Bicycle" when I got the cassette in 78. He was blind drunk and fell into my Moms rose bushes, LOL. All cut up from thorns and shit. I miss the old "daze"

I'm...hundreds of years old...at least it feels like. Only discovered this song randomly a week ago on the radio. Love your memory-it sounds like an absolute wonderful time.
Weren't they great? I've got a ton of them too. So sad today's kids won't have the same old folks we did. They don't make em like they used to.@@spookedhorse

That's what we all say!
"Stu" is Ian Stewart, the Rolling Stones road manager and piano player. The song was recorded when Led Zeppelin was set up in Headley Grange. They were using the Rolling Stones mobile recording unit and Stu stopped in. There was an old piano in the main room that was slightly out of tune. Stu was playing it and Jimmy Page was tuning his guitar to how the piano was out of tune. Tape was rolling and everything was pretty much improvised from Bonzo's drumming to the lyrics Plant was singing.
Suggestion credit:
Joel - Bowie, VA
Stewart was considered the "6th Stone." Stones management felt he didn't fit the image and kept him behind the scenes. He died of a heart attack in 1985.
This was recorded in 1971. It was used on Physical Graffiti to fill the double album.
Lead singer Robert Plant played guitar, while guitarist Jimmy Page played mandolin.
The lyrics were taken from the Ritchie Valens song "Ooh My Head." Since Valens was dead, his mom was given a composer credit so she would get some royalties. That's why "Mrs. Valens" is listed on the album. The composer credit reads: Page/Plant/Jones/Bonham/Ian Stewart/Mrs. Valens.
While "Mrs. Valens" has always been listed as a composer of this song, the Valens estate sued the band in 1979 over the amount of royalties they were owed.
I have always wondered who Stu is. Thank you for the explanation.
Man, he's got the moves 😲👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 wish I could dance only half as good as he can 🕺🏻

The dance choreography of that guy is astonishing. This looks to be 1940s or 1950s black-and-white from Mexico. He foreshadowed all the dance moves of the rap/hip hop movement era
That guy must certainly have been a professional dancer. Very few people could pull that off, especially in those days. I bet that took a lot to get on film.

The backbone of modern music, great tune LZ
You're not kidding, it's an old Ritchie Valens tune that Zep reworked.
They reworked others. Took guff over it. SO WHAT !!😅 theirs rock
@@swhip897 Easy. The guy called it a backbone of modern music. I was simply pointing out that modern rock started in the 50's (some would argue late 40's) not the 70's. It wasn't a criticism of Zep. I love Boogie With Stu, too.
When I worked for the Laskys retail hi-fi chain in the mid- to late-70s, we played this quietly but continuously on a very long reel-to-reel tape when our Area Manager, Stuart Bloom, visited our branch. At first, he didn’t notice, but he did eventually and said how much he hated our music and made us play something else. Needless to say, it was a branch favourite for many years and remains so in this household. Hi there, Dennis and Kevin.

Little Richard first recorded this song in 1958, calling it, “Ooh, My Soul.” Ritchie Valens recorded it in 1959, calling it, “Ooh, My Head.”
@@straycatttt2766 I didn't know this! Typical of Zeppelin to not give credit . Can't wait to check out Richard's version.
@@meetontheledge1380 Not an issue. LZ gave plenty of credit to sources of songs. They famously missed on LZ2. It was a managerial error of Peter Grant. Other bands did the same thing. It happened all the time in that time and in the past. If you checked around a bit, historically, it was normal to do covers of other artist's music. Until greed stepped in, it was considered a compliment. The song is much older and the style of boogie began in the 1920- 30s. A lot of songs done in the Big Band era were remakes of earlier music. Connie Francis' big hit, "Who's Sorry Now," was a song from the 1920s. Her father suggested she do a cover. Eion and the Belmonts did "Where or When," which was from the 1930s. Many times, the information is not available. In those days, even in the 1960s and 70s, before the internet, British musicians would know the song, but not the history of it if it was from America. Popular music is full of cases like this. It's from the folk tradition of copying much as it gets passed from one generation to the next. Often an old tune with new lyrics, or some new lyrics, and so on. When Plant sings, "Oh, my head," in this version, he's giving a nod to Riche Valens. In the notes here, he quotes Page discussing how they credited Mrs. Valens because they heard that she never got a cent from her son's hits. But then they sued LZ for the whole song. GREED came with LZ fame and money. They were sued for doing "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You," but Joan Baez and another SF band I knew personally, Quicksilver Messenger Service, did it as well, but only LZ was sued. Quicksilver was the first band to do The Star Spangled Banner on electric guitar, and John Cippolina was an innovator with a trademark sound, but Jimi Hendrix took it and became famous for it at Woodstock. No one sued Jimi Hendrix. On and on...
